What is Macular Degeneration

What is Macular Degeneration

Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in people age 60 and older. It affects the macula, the central part of the retina, responsible for central vision and seeing fine details. The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that captures the picture that we see. ARMD destroys central vision, what we use for daily tasks, like reading and driving. In ARMD vision loss can be mild or severe, and it can worsen gradually or suddenly.

There are 2 forms of the disease: Dry ARMD and Wet ARMD. In Dry ARMD the deterioration tends to be slow and gradual. In Wet ARMD abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina, destroying the retina, and causing sudden and severe vision loss.

High-dose antioxidant vitamins have been shown to reduce the risk of advanced ARMD and vision loss. Adequate levels of these vitamins and minerals are difficult to obtain just by diet. They are not a cure for AMD but may delay the onset of advanced disease. Wet ARMD can be treated with injections of medicines into the eye.

All patients should have a dilated eye exam to look for Macular Degeneration. To schedule a dilated eye exam or if you have questions, please call D’Ambrosio Eye Care at 800-325-3937. You may also request an appointment at facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare.

If you or someone you know suffers from eyestrain symptoms they are encouraged to schedule an eye examination at D’Ambrosio Eye Care by calling us at 800-325-3937, visiting D’Ambrosio Eye Care or facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare so that we can help identify the possible causes and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Our first Levels class is a success and we visit Dr Neal!

Our first Levels class is a success and we visit Dr Neal!

Yesterday I taught my first Levels class at Canine Affair Center! Two people who had signed up didnt show so we might be able to bring a couple people in from the wait list. I used Hardy as a demo dog for clicker training and he was super! Then when I put him in a crate to wait, he yelled at me so after giving him a warning, he got "too badded" out to the crate in my van. After class, I worked with him a bit and he generally remembered everything. We are still working on loose leash walking with my chair really hard since what he learned with John walking doesnt just transfer to the chair (something I learned from training Laurel - the puppy has to learn both skills).
This afternoon, Laurel had an appointment with Dr. Neal. He checked her ruptured ligament and thought that it was healing nicely however, he wants her to rest for another two weeks. He doesnt think it is going to be a chronic injury and it shouldnt interfere with her ability to do her job or play dog sport games (like agility). Of course, the movement we want to avoid - having her pivot on that foot - is exactly what she does when she is playing with Hardy! However, she is being very good at self regulation and will put herself in her crate or lay on my bed instead of tearing around the house or yard with him. Dr. Neal looked at Hardys eyes which are still goopy at times (and Laurels are starting to be goopy some too) and gave us some antibiotic ointment to use with both. He also looked at an upper tooth behind one of Hardys adult teeth - it is a baby tooth that is resisting coming out. He suggested we just leave it until it comes out on its own. Hardy weighs 36.7 lbs now and seems to be growing nicely.

Our Second Baby is a

Our Second Baby is a

GIRL!
Dont let the blue topper fool you! The inside was PINK!

Can you believe it? I still cant!

The whole story of finding out the gender was a tad dramatic.

On Thursday night, I confirmed how many cupcakes I needed with the baker and the various details of the transaction. We were set!

First thing Friday morning, she text me that she had a family emergency and wouldnt be able to bake them for me. I completely understood but at the same time I was panicked! I was supposed to host 30+ people at my house the following morning and who could I possibly get to bake an order on such late notice?

She ended up connecting me with her aunt, who lives in Tulare and is actually my uncles (on my moms side) sister! We made plans to meet up after my appointment in Visalia (pretty much halfway for both of us) and it was done! Whew. Crisis averted.

I work a normal day and at the right time I started drinking LOTS of water. If youve been pregnant and had an ultrasound you know how incredibly uncomfortable it is! There was already a lot of stress on the appointment because Bryan had a gig just past Fresno and hed have to leave early. I got to Hanford Imaging and they told me there would be a delay which meant Bryan was going to miss the entire appointment.

When that came to light, I was really upset. I couldnt believe that he would have to leave the appointment early let alone miss it entirely. He sat with me in the waiting room and I asked my sisters to come be with me. I was feeling fairly emotional about it all but was handling it fine. I went to grab my phone out of my purse (and I still had the large bottle of water that was almost finished) when I almost dropped the phone AND the water! I ended up doing this weird seizure-like move to catch them both but not before water from the open bottle splashed all over Bryan completely soaking his white shirt and leaving a large wet spot on his jeans.

That was the moment that I started to do the hysterical embarrassed laugh/cry thing in the completely packed waiting room. Maybe you arent familiar with it but unfortunately, I am.

Sigh.

By the time my sisters arrive, Ive pulled myself together and Bryan is ready to leave. He was already ten minutes past the time he was supposed to leave but he just knew that as soon as he walked out the door, they would call my name. Sure enough, it happened.

Youd think that the appointment/day couldnt get any worse but youd be wrong!

I get in the room and the technician apologizes for the wait and I played it off but said I was bummed that the delay made my husband miss the appointment. My sisters say they are going to take pictures and a little video to show him and the tech says she cant allow that due to HIPPA. This Ill never understand because I am the one consenting to the photo and video being done so I can show my husband. How is that a violation if Ive allowed it. Ugh! I gave my sisters a look and they nodded, totally prepared to take pictures for me. Yay for sisters!!

We start and I get to see the baby, but Im so upset by the whole ordeal that its hard to get into the appointment. Also, she doesnt move the screen so that I can even see anything which was frustrating Then she tells me that I wont get any print-outs of the baby because THEY ARE OUT OF FILM.

Uhhhhhhh.....what? I cant tell you what cuss words were flowing through my head but I can tell you there were many and they were colorful. Unless there is a reason, this is my ONE AND ONLY ultrasound and I have nothing except unlawful photos to show for it. Nice.

Then she says I am measuring smaller than my due date and she doesnt think shell be able to tell the gender. I track everything regarding my period and our sexy time (Hi Mom!) and I was like, but the dates dont match up. She said I was measuring a little over 16 weeks and the first day of my last period had me at over 18 weeks. According to my memory (and app) there is no way I could be that far behind because there wasnt a tell-tale dot on the calendar indicating.....ya know.

AT MOST, I could only be a week behind. I explained that Shepherd always measured small and even if I had had him at term, he would have been a small baby. Bryan and I are small in the stature sense so I think its all relative.

Anyways, I told her I hoped that it worked out because I was supposed to host a bunch of family the next day and she said she would definitely do her best. You could tell that she was flustered too so my sisters and I started trying to lighten the mood and laughing a bit, which worked wonders. She ended up letting us take a few clearer pictures that the sneaked ones to show Bryan. And obviously, she was able to see the gender. She stated (probably to cover herself) that she could see the gender but that "it seemed early, and its never 100%" so that didnt really help my confidence, but she confirmed with a tech-in-training who was there and they felt confident enough to write it down.

We end up leaving and I pick up Shepherd and my mom and we drive to Visalia to drop off the envelope. My Mom and Larry ended up being the stars of the show because they drove early the next morning to pick up the cupcakes, brought over their coffee pot and creamers and coffee and basically saved my life. My mom even ended up staying with me Friday night to help me clean up and set up for the next morning. Big, huge, wet kiss shout out to them for all their help.

Friday came to an end (good riddance) and the next morning, surrounded by our family and friends, we found out that we are having a precious girl... probably. ;)

It all worked out in the end, as things usually do. I am still in shock that the little girl I have dreamed of, my little Lauriana, could really be coming into the world! Its unreal! I am so excited and other than extreme exhaustion, have felt really good. My hair is falling out like crazy and Im dealing with acne for the first time ever, but all things considered, Im doing very well and the baby is healthy!

That is all that truly matters.

How Important Is It to Wash New Clothes Before Wearing Them

How Important Is It to Wash New Clothes Before Wearing Them

How Important Is It to Wash New Clothes Before Wearing Them?
January 30, 2016 | 250,122 views

By Dr. Mercola
Raise your hand if youre guilty of bringing home a new shirt or pair of pants from the store and wearing them, sans washing. Its very common, maybe even typical, as many fabrics look pristine when theyre fresh off the rack.
You probably assume theyre clean or at least relatively so, but tests conducted by Philip Tierno, Ph.D. director of Microbiology and Immunology at New York University, at the behest of Good Morning America, uncovered some disturbing compounds lurking on clothing.
And this is only one reason to consider washing before wearing. Many clothing items are also contaminated with chemicals and dyes that may lead to irritation or other health issues.
Even insects (like lice) could potentially be transmitted on new clothes. If youre currently not a washer-before-wearing type, you may change your mind by the end of this article.
Feces, Respiratory Secretions, Vaginal Organisms and More
Tierno tested pants, blouses, underwear, jackets and other clothing items purchased from chain clothing stores (including both high-end and low-end options). The tests revealed a number of unsavory compounds lurking on the "new" clothes, including:1
  • Respiratory secretions
  • Skin flora
  • Fecal flora
  • Yeast
Perhaps not surprisingly, swimsuits, underwear and other intimate items were the most heavily contaminated. Tierno told ABC News:2
"Some garments were grossly contaminated with many organisms … indicating that either many people tried it or ... someone tried it on with heavy contamination …
In a sense, you are touching somebodys arm pit or groin. So you want to be protected thats all … You may not come down with anything and, most cases you dont, but its potentially possible."
What types of illnesses could you potentially get from trying on contaminated clothes? Organisms that cause hepatitis A, travelers diarrhea, MRSA, salmonella, norovirus, yeast infections and streptococcus are all fair game when it comes to clothing items tried on by multiple people.
Even lice and scabies could potentially be transmitted by trying on clothes. Is it likely? No. Possible? Yes, particularly if your immune system is not functioning up to par. Tierno told The Huffington Post:3
"The good thing is that most people have a very robust immune system, so they can usually fight off the small number of organisms they may get on their body … The fact that you come into contact with one doesnt mean youre going to get sick."
Chemical Contaminants: Another Reason to Wash New Clothes
Depending on what country your new clothes were manufactured in, they may contain multiple chemicals of concern. Among them are azo-aniline dyes, which may cause skin reactions ranging from mild to severe.
If youre sensitive, such dyes may leave your skin red, itchy and dry, especially where the fabric rubs on your skin, such as at your waist, neck, armpits and thighs. The irritants can be mostly washed out, but it might take multiple washings to do so.
Formaldehyde resins are also used in clothing to cut down on wrinkling and mildew. Not only is formaldehyde a known carcinogen, but the resins have been linked to eczema and may cause your skin to become flaky or erupt in a rash.4
Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE), meanwhile, is a toxic endocrine-disrupting surfactant used to manufacture clothing.
You certainly dont want to be exposed to NPE if you can help it, but when consumers wash their clothes, NPEs are released into local water supplies where wastewater treatment plants are unable to remove them.
When NPEs enter the environment, they break down into nonylphenol (NP), a toxic, endocrine-disrupting chemical that accumulates in sediments and builds up in fish and wildlife.
Chemicals May Lurk in Your Clothing Even After Washing
Unfortunately, washing wont remove all the chemicals in your clothing. For instance, the antimicrobial triclosan is sometimes added to fabrics, including clothing. Research has shown that triclosan can alter hormone regulation and may interfere with fetal development.
Animal studies have also raised concerns about its ability to affect fertility, and bacteria exposed to triclosan may also become resistant to antibiotics. Even an increased cancer risk has been suggested.
Stain-proof clothing, meanwhile, is a common source of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), which are toxic to humans and the environment. Youll most often hear about PFCs in relation to non-stick cookware, but theyre also common in fabrics.
Unless the clothing you buy is organic, it also is likely made from genetically engineered (GE) cotton that is heavily treated with pesticides and other chemicals during production. The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) explained:5
"The chemicals used in cotton production dont end with cultivation. As an aid in harvesting, herbicides are used to defoliate the plants, making picking easier.
Producing a textile from the plants involves more chemicals in the process of bleaching, sizing, dying, straightening, shrink reduction, stain and odor resistance, fireproofing, mothproofing, and static- and wrinkle-reduction.
Some of these chemicals are applied with heat, thus bonding them to the cotton fibers. Several washings are done throughout the process, but some of the softeners and detergents leave a residue that will not totally be removed from the final product.
Chemicals often used for finishing include formaldehyde, caustic soda, sulfuric acid, bromines, urea resins, sulfonamides, halogens, and bromines.
Some imported clothes are now impregnated with long-lasting disinfectants which are very hard to remove, and whose smell gives them away. These and the other chemical residues affect people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.
Also, people have developed allergic reactions, such as hives, to formaldehyde through skin contact with solutions on durable-press clothing containing formaldehyde."
Conventionally Grown GE Cotton Is the Worlds Dirtiest Crop
You might be surprised to learn that cotton is considered the worlds dirtiest crop due to the cotton industrys heavy use of hazardous herbicides and insecticides, including some of the most hazardous insecticides on the market. According to the Organic Trade Association:6
"Cotton is considered the worlds dirtiest crop due to its heavy use of insecticides, the most hazardous pesticide to human and animal health. Cotton covers 2.5% of the worlds cultivated land yet uses 16% of the worlds insecticides, more than any other single major crop.
Aldicarb, parathion, and methamidopho, three of the most acutely hazardous insecticides to human health as determined by the World Health Organization, rank in the top ten most commonly used in cotton production.
All but one of the remaining seven most commonly used are classified as moderately to highly hazardous.
Aldicarb, cottons second best selling insecticide and most acutely poisonous to humans, can kill a man with just one drop absorbed through the skin, yet it is still used in 25 countries and the US, where 16 states have reported it in their groundwater."
As you might suspect, this is hazardous on multiple levels — for the farmers working with these chemicals, the people living nearby, the consumers buying the cotton and virtually everyone else, who will eventually be impacted by this widespread environmental pollution.
This is one reason why I strongly encourage you to choose organic cotton clothing whenever possible — it will not be genetically engineered and subject to this onslaught of toxic exposures.
Top Tips for Safer Clothing
Looking for clothing made from organic cotton is an excellent start to finding safe, non-toxic clothing (for you and the environment). You can also look for the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label, which is indicative that it has been tested by an independent laboratory and found to be free of harmful levels of more than 100 substances, including:
  • Azo dyes
  • Phthalates
  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticides
  • Allergenic dyes
Finally, many experts do recommend washing new clothes when you bring them home from the store, maybe even twice. If the article of clothing cannot be machine washed, consider running it through a cycle in a hot dryer before wearing it.

You may also want to keep on some clothes while trying on new clothing at a store (at least leave on your undergarments, and then wash those too when you get home). Washing your hands after shopping is also a good idea, as youve been handling clothing that could have any number of chemicals and other contaminants on them.

Hair Is An Extension Of the Nervous System Why Indians Keep Their Hair Long

Hair Is An Extension Of the Nervous System Why Indians Keep Their Hair Long

 > Hair Is An Extension Of The Nervous System – Why Indians Keep Their Hair Long

    Waking Times
This information about hair has been hidden from the public since the Viet Nam War.
Our culture leads people to believe that hair style is a matter of personal preference, that hair style is a matter of fashion and/or convenience, and that how people wear their hair is simply a cosmetic issue. Back in the Viet Nam war however, an entirely different picture emerged, one that has been carefully covered up and hidden from public view.
In the early nineties, Sally [name changed to protect privacy] was married to a licensed psychologist who worked at a VA Medical hospital. He worked with combat veterans with PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Most of them had served in Viet Nam.
Sally said, “I remember clearly an evening when my husband came back to our apartment on Doctor’s Circle carrying a thick official looking folder in his hands. Inside were hundreds of pages of certain studies commissioned by the government. He was in shock from the contents. What he read in those documents completely changed his life. From that moment on my conservative middle of the road husband grew his hair and beard and never cut them again. What is more, the VA Medical center let him do it, and other very conservative men in the staff followed his example. As I read the documents, I learned why.

It seems that during the Viet Nam War special forces in the war department had sent undercover experts to comb American Indian Reservations looking for talented scouts, for tough young men trained to move stealthily through rough terrain. They were especially looking for men with outstanding, almost supernatural, tracking abilities. Before being approached, these carefully selected men were extensively documented as experts in tracking and survival.

With the usual enticements, the well proven smooth phrases used to enroll new recruits, some of these Indian trackers were then enlisted. Once enlisted, an amazing thing happened. Whatever talents and skills they had possessed on the reservation seemed to mysteriously disappear, as recruit after recruit failed to perform as expected in the field.
Serious casualities and failures of performance led the government to contract expensive testing of these recruits, and this is what was found.
When questioned about their failure to perform as expected, the older recruits replied consistently that when they received their required military haircuts, they could no longer ‘sense’ the enemy, they could no longer access a ‘sixth sense’ , their ‘intuition’ no longer was reliable, they couldn’t ‘read’ subtle signs as well or access subtle extrasensory information.
So the testing institute recruited more Indian trackers, let them keep their long hair, and tested them in multiple areas. Then they would pair two men together who had received the same scores on all the tests. They would let one man in the pair keep his hair long, and gave the other man a military haircut. Then the two men retook the tests.
Time after time the man with long hair kept making high scores. Time after time, the man with the short hair failed the tests in which he had previously scored high scores.
Here is a typical test:
The recruit is sleeping out in the woods. An armed ‘enemy’ approaches the sleeping man. The long haired man is awakened out of his sleep by a strong sense of danger and gets away long before the enemy is close, long before any sounds from the approaching enemy are audible.

In another version of this test the long haired man senses an approach and somehow intuits that the enemy will perform a physical attack. He follows his ‘sixth sense‘ and stays still, pretending to be sleeping, but quickly grabs the attacker and ‘kills’ him as the attacker reaches down to strangle him.
This same man, after having passed these and other tests, then received a military haircut and consistently failed these tests, and many other tests that he had previously passed.
So, the document recommended that all Indian trackers be exempt from military haircuts. In fact, it required that trackers keep their hair long.”
The mammalian body has evolved over millions of years. Survival skills of human and animal at times seem almost supernatural. Science is constantly coming up with more discoveries about the amazing abilities of man and animal to survive. Each part of the body has highly sensitive work to perform for the survival and well being of the body as a whole. The body has a reason for every part of itself.
Hair is an extension of the nervous system, it can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly-evolved ‘feelers’ or ‘antennae’ that transmit vast amounts of important information to the brain stem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.
Not only does hair in people, including facial hair in men, provide an information highway reaching the brain, hair also emits energy, the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain into the outer environment. This has been seen in Kirlian photography when a person is photographed with long hair and then rephotographed after the hair is cut.
When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in ‘numbing-out’.
Cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It is also a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds. It contributes to sexual frustration.
Conclusion
In searching for solutions for the distress in our world, it may be time for us to consider that many of our most basic assumptions about reality are in error. It may be that a major part of the solution is looking at us in the face each morning when we see ourselves in the mirror.

The story of Sampson and Delilah in the Bible has a lot of encoded truth to tell us. When Delilah cut Sampson’s hair, the once undefeatable Sampson was defeated.

Today is The Day

Today is The Day

via

Well. Today is the day. My first official day in the USC School Business Management program. I check into the dorm today and get settled in and I report to class at 11:00am for an intense beginning into the next year of my life.

Im scared. And Im excited. Mostly, Im scared.

The people in my program, they are all established. All of them have been to college. All of them are already a CBO, Superintendent/Principal or Board member. I keep telling Bryan that I am way, way out of my league.

But I got into the program. The coordinators saw something in me that they believe can complete the program. Despite my doubts and insecurities, I wouldnt have been accepted if I wasnt a viable candidate.

I have to keep reminding myself of that. Im there to learn. What I dont know they will teach me. What I do know will lay the ground work. I can do this.

Wish me luck!

Oncology Dr Cancer is a Fungus and it can be Treated Using Sodium Bicatbonate by Tulio Simonicino

Oncology Dr Cancer is a Fungus and it can be Treated Using Sodium Bicatbonate by Tulio Simonicino

Oncology Dr: "Cancer is a Fungus and it can be Treated Using Sodium Bicarbonate"

Tulio Simoncini is a former Italian oncologist in Rome who developed a theory that all cancer is caused exclusively by a fungus called Candida albicans.

“Cancer is a fungus, called Candida albicans, and it can be treated using sodium bicarbonate”.

His natural cancer cure is actually a simple treatment. He believes that the body and tumor needs to be alkalized, and this can be done using a cheap, common compound.

This is actually sodium bicarbonate which is used to tackle the Candida, shrink the tumor and thus stop metastases.

Acid bodies, sodium bicarbonate, Candida, beneficial bacteria, and cancer

Simoncini’s work rests on four theoretical elements, which are the following: Initially, acid bodies, since they are known to be related to health issues and cancer.

Secondly, the body can be alkalized using sodium bicarbonate, which is known to have been used as antacid, an ingestion aid in many preparations. A small pot of this ingredient can be found for a little over one pound in high street chemists.

Thirdly, the beneficial bacteria in your intestine are now known to direct up to 85 per cent of your immune response, to release anti-cancer vitamins (like biotin, B-12, folic acid, vitamin K) from your foods and even to produce a compound (sodium butyrate) which causes cancer cells to self-destruct. Beneficial bacteria work imperfectly if the acidity of the gut increases.

Fourthly, the first line of defense consists of beneficial bacteria. At night when you sleep, a vast quantities of microbes, fungus and yeasts that you consumed during the day with your food are digested by beneficial bacteria.

Actually, the favorite food of beneficial bacteria is the yeast or fungus, Candida albicans.

Candida and cancer

Yeasts like Candida are anaerobes, which means that they generate their energy in the absence of oxygen. When in the blood stream, they can colonize certain local areas of the body and greatly reduce the oxygen levels in that area.

Consequently, the local cells do not die, but switch their own energy production from an oxygen-based system to one that doesn´t use oxygen.

Testimony: Heres How I Healed My Mother’s Skin Cancer With Baking Soda

Cancer cells do not use oxygen to generate their energy from food molecules so they employ this same system. In fact, Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize in 1931 for telling the world this property of cancer cells and that oxygen was their enemy!

Candida Albicans is possesses a property to escape the intestine and travel around the body in the blood stream. The yeast in the bloodstream can be killed by oregano oil and cinnamon. About 25 percent of type-2 Diabetics were shown to improve when given cinnamon.

This is due to the fungus sitting on the outer membranes of cells, preventing crucial receptor sites from working properly – in the case of diabetes, those receptor sites are for insulin.

Moreover, Candida also produces a sugar-like waste product, so people with higher blood sugar levels develop more cancer and survive less.

Therefore, the results of a research covered in CANCER actives research service Cancer Watch come as no surprise, showing that women who had taken antibiotics more than 25 times during their lifetime had twice the risk of breast cancer.

Related: The #1 Enemy of the Big Pharma Cartel is... Baking Soda!

Their immune systems were weak, indicated by the illnesses that required the antibiotics. In addition, their friendly bacteria were reduced allowing Candida more chance to survive in the gut and move to the blood stream.

Dr Simoncini was a respected Italian Oncologist who developed his theory that all cancers are caused by the fungus Candida albicans.

Furthermore, he believed that the cure of cancer is to alkalize the body in order to produce conditions in which the Candida could not thrive. What is even more important, this can be done using an inexpensive and easily attainable weapon: baking soda.

His main weapon is the inexpensive, sodium bicarbonate. Even though his discoveries and remarkable theory were of greatest importance, he was struck off in Italy.

Is Sleeping with Pets Dangerous

Is Sleeping with Pets Dangerous

Recently, there was a report released by The Centers for Disease Control that highlighted the risks of allowing your pets to sleep in your bed. It kicked up quite a storm, and irked many pet owners who followed the practice of letting their cats or dogs sleep with them. Is it really so dangerous to let pets sleep in the same bed as you do? Find out in the following paragraphs.

Sleeping with Pets - Is it Dangerous?

The answer is YES and NO! People who own pets usually treat the pets as a family member and do not distinguish them in any way. They are allowed on the sofas, are given hugs and kisses and cuddles just like everyone else in the family is, and are even allowed to sleep in the owners bed if they find it comfortable. Is sleeping with pets dangerous? Ask a pet owner this, and 6 out of 10 times, you may get a look that tells you the owner hasnt even thought about it.

The whole "sleeping with pets may kill you" issue is a very recent one. Pets can carry harmful pathogens which, if they are transmitted to our body, can actually lead to many scary and really dangerous conditions or diseases. But it all depends and varies from individual to individual. A family friend of mine had a pet who WAS NOT allowed in his daughters bed, but she still caught a horrible skin condition, and the doctors advised the family to leave the pet if they wanted their daughter to be healthy, because she was apparently, allergic to dog hair! But, to defeat that one case, I know many, many friends who own pets, allow them to sleep in their beds and are still as healthy as horses! The chances of people dying due to pets sleeping in the same bed are slim, not grim. I myself, have a German Shepherd who sleeps in my bed, and Im fit and fine, hale and hearty, and all that, so I guess, its a matter of personal choice and preferences, and the hygiene of your pet.

Points to Keep in Mind Before Letting Your Pet in Your Bed

It is better to keep in mind that although we love our pets and they are like our kids to us, they are still built differently from us, and need special care and grooming to keep them clean and hygienic. There are certain pathogens - viruses and bacteria - that love your pet almost as much as or probably more than you do, since their survival depends on them which is why they breed on your pets body. So, that is one major risk factor when you are letting your pet sleep with you. If you are keeping your pet clean and healthy and you yourself are healthy and fit, then its OK to let your pet sleep in your bed. But to do that, here are a few things that you should keep in mind before you let your sweetheart leap into bed with you.
  • Make sure that your pet is regularly vaccinated, so that he is safe from diseases. Once that is taken care of, you are safe too, since you wont contract any diseases from him.
  • De-worm your pet regularly, so that chances of infections due to any sort of worms - hookworm, tapeworm, ringworm, etc., - are greatly reduced or eliminated.
  • If your pet has been infested with ticks, fleas, or anything else, then it is better to have him treated for it immediately, and its advisable to not allow him in your bed for the duration of the treatment.
  • If your pet has had some injury recently and the wound is still open, then treat it with antiseptic on priority, and disallow your pet to get into bed with you till the wound heals. The bacteria from our body can be transferred to him and vice-versa. Once the wound is healed, he can be the king of your bed again.
  • Remember to not let your pet sleep in the same bed as an infant. Infants do not have a fully developed and strong immune system, so they cannot fight off the mildest pathogens that can get transferred to them through pets. This makes them extra susceptible to diseases.
  • Also, if you have been ill recently, then it is best to refrain from letting your pet in your bed. Your germs can infect him, and since your immune system is weakened, you can get a host of other illnesses from the germs that may be on your pet.
  • If your pet has the habit of licking his private areas, either find a solution for it, or do not let him lick you. No matter how much you love your pet, it cannot possibly seem reasonable to you, to let him lick his butt, and then prance to you and lick your face! Im crazy about my pet too, but I wouldnt stand for this.
  • Pets mouths are hot breeding places for bacteria and germs. So if you let your pet lick and kiss you often, make it a point to wash that part off immediately so that the bacteria are killed and you are safe. This way, you get the best of both worlds! Ensure that you are using a good antiseptic and disinfecting soap.
  • If your pet has just come from outside, there is a good chance that he has stepped in lots of rubbish on the street. It is best to clean his paws thoroughly before letting him into the house, so that once he is in, his movements are not restricted. He can jump on your bed all he wants.
  • Maintain proper hygiene of your pet. Give him regular baths, get him treated for fleas and ticks regularly, brush his teeth, and keep him clean. This will ensure that his presence in your bed will not be a cause for alarm.
Keeping pets out of bed simply because they carry pathogens from outside into your house is a pretty lame argument, because if you are so scared of contracting pathogens from outside, you shouldnt be getting out of your house at all! Many people are outraged by the idea of kicking their pets out of their beds. If you take care of the points mentioned above, you wont have to do that. But your love for your pet shouldnt be blind. Ive heard of pet owners who feed their pets from their own plates, with their bare hands and then continue eating food themselves! This is totally unnecessary and definitely taking things too far. What this proves more than the fact that you love your pet, is that you absolutely lack common sense! You have to draw the line somewhere, and somewhere reasonable I mean. Why sleeping with pets is bad, is because you are in closer contact with germs than otherwise. But that should be taken care of, if you follow all the points Ive mentioned above. As long as you are able to do that, you can hug your pet all night, if you so wish.

Poopin on the Potty is a Big Deal in our House

Poopin on the Potty is a Big Deal in our House

Wait, what?

Oh yes.  This guy:

This guy, pooped on the potty.

Over the past couple months, weve been trying to get Tyler used to the potty.  Were not super consistent, but generally weve been getting him to sit on the potty at least once a day.  Mostly just for familiarity purposes.  We havent really expected him to actually go largely because when we sit him on the potty its typically during the process of changing an already soiled diaper.

Anyhow, this morning when changing him and getting him dressed, he told me he wanted to go sit on the potty.  I was already running late and wasnt really in the mood for the potty this morning, but Im pretty sure theres a line in the parent handbook, in the potty training section, that says something like "Never deny your childs request to sit on the potty."

So off to the bathroom we go and I sit him on the potty and he proceeds to play with the potty seat and his boy parts and just generally having a good ol time sittin there grinning at me.  Im getting impatient and keep asking him every 7 seconds if hes done.  He keeps saying no.  So I told him I needed to go finish getting ready for work and he could stay on the potty as long as he likes.

I go back to my bathroom and Im not in there 30 seconds before he hollers in his sing song voice, "I DOO-OOONE!"  (When did he grow up???)  So, with a big eye roll, I walk back to his bathroom and he says, "I poop."  Whaaaaat?

I pick his little butt up off the toilet and sure enough, there is a gift staring back at me!  (Youre welcome for not posting a picture of it.)

However, Im immediately skeptical cause its not usual for his sissy to forget to flush the toilet after shes done using it.  I checked his butt for evidence, found some and commenced with the celebrating, high fiving, and fist bumping.

Then we had to call Daddy and tell him.  And in all the excitement about pooping, I forgot to have the kids tell their Daddy happy birthday.  My bad.  But it was poop!  In the proper location!  Can you blame me for being distracted?

We did try to make it up to Daddy by having some cookies and creme pie for dessert tonight (Lily picked it out).  We put 3 blue candles (dont ask me why 3...Lily said that was the right amount) and all sang Happy Birthday, which is to say, I sang it and Lily chimed in at the very end.  Tyler just kept sticking his fingers in the pie, too anxious to wait until singing was over to eat some.

Happy Birthday Babe!  So cool that you can share your birthday with such a monumental milestone in your sons life.  Ha!

What Is Astigmatism

What Is Astigmatism

"Astigmatism is a common condition which is present in many people. It is caused when there is an irregular shape to either the natural lens inside the eye or the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye,” explains Michael Fu, O.D., Massachusetts Optometrist at D’Ambrosio Eye Care.

Dr. Fu continues “the lens and cornea focus light on the Retina, the light-sensitive surface at the back of the eye. In astigmatism, the surface of the lens or cornea may have a different curvature in one direction compared to another. For example, someone with astigmatism usually has a cornea shaped more like a football than a basketball.” As a result, light is not focused to a single point on the back of the eye and this can lead to blurred vision.

Slight amounts of astigmatism usually do not affect vision, but larger amounts can lead to blurred vision, eyestrain, or even headaches. The most common ways of correcting astigmatism are with glasses or contact lenses. However, laser vision correction or lens replacement surgery can also reduce or eliminate astigmatism.

Some cases of astigmatism are caused by damage to the cornea from injury or from medical conditions such as keratoconus. Astigmatism from these causes can result in a type of astigmatism called irregular astigmatism. Eyeglasses usually cannot correct this type of astigmatism but technological advances now allow most types of astigmatism to be corrected with contact lenses or even refractive surgery. An eye exam by an eye care provider with experience in these technologies is needed to provide patients with all the available treatment options.

Should you have any questions or are interested in learning if you may be a candidate for laser vision correction or lens replacement surgery, please contact D’Ambrosio Eye Care at 800-325-3937. You may also request an appointment at facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare.

New research suggests that maple syrup, despite being a concentrated source of "sugar," possesses significant anti-cancer properties.
A provocative study published recently in the journal Oncology Reports reveals that a commonly used sweetener, maple syrup, inhibits the growth and invasion of human colorectal cancer cells.
This finding may strike some readers as surprising considering just how much research now exists implicating processed sugars like fructose in a wide range of chronic diseases. For instance, take a look at the toxicological data on fructoses role in over 80 adverse health effects on our Fructose research page.
This study is all the more interesting considering a recent experiment demonstrated, for what looks like the first time, that sugar is capable of not just feeding cancer but inducing it, i.e. it possesses oncogenic properties.
Obviously, the glaring disparity observed here is due to the fact that not all “sugar” is alike. The difference, for instance, between glucose, fructose, and sucrose is highly significant, on both a chemical and metabolic level. Also, food is a source of information that has gene-modulatory and regulatory functions. This means that one can not reduce the informational/qualitative aspects of any food down to its nutritional composition which is primarily understood in terms of strictly quantitative macronutrient and micronutrient profiles.
When you add in this all important nutritional context, particularly the role that food plays as both a delivery system and a source for a set of co-factors for appropriate metabolism and utilization, a “sugar” will behave far differently than when it is consumed in isolation, especially when consumed in the biologically inappropriate quantities characteristic of the modern Western diet. Another example is honey, which is also high in sucrose but does not act like regular purified “sugar” either. In fact, not only does honey not appear to act as a "fuel" for aerobic glycolysis (the preferred metabolic mode of cancer cells) as does purified fructose, but I recently reported on its potential as an anti-cancer agent, and with applications perhaps especially relevant to breast cancer.
And so, this new study reveals that maple syrup, which has a wide range of physiochemically and informationally active components beyond sucrose alone, should no longer be classified crudely as a sugar, but as a whole food and potential phytomedicine with a complex composition still in need of more in depth exploratory research and analysis.
Maple Syrups Potential Anti-Cancer Properties
The new study, titled “Inhibitory effect of maple syrup on the cell growth and invasion of human colorectal cancer cells,” was performed by Japanese researchers who examined the effects of three types of maple syrup, classified by color, on colorectal cell (CRC) proliferation, migration and invasion. Their goal was to assess the suitability of maple syrup as a potential phytomedicine for cancer prevention and treatment. Their results were summarized as follows:
“CRC cells that were administered maple syrup showed significantly lower growth rates than cells that were administered sucrose. In addition, administration of maple syrup to CRC cells caused inhibition of cell invasion, while there was no effect on cell migration. Administration of maple syrup clearly inhibited AKT phosphorylation [a pro-cancer cellular signal transduction pathway], while there was no effect on ERK phosphorylation.”
These results lead them to conclude:
[M]aple syrup, which is a natural sweetener used throughout the world, inhibits CRC cell growth and invasion through suppression of the AKT signaling pathway. These findings suggest that maple syrup, particularly dark colored ones, might be suitable as phytomedicines, which have fewer adverse effects than traditional chemotherapy for CRC treatment.”

Conventional approaches to colorectal cancer treatment now rely heavily on highly toxic drugs, such as fluoropyrimidines plus either oxaliplatin or irinotecan, which is considered the standard of care for advanced CRC. These agents can actually increase chemoresistant subpopulation of cancer cells, including the cancer stem cells, which are at the heart of cancer malignancy. They also have a broad range of debilitating, even lethal side effects which are arguably a greater overall mortality risk than the cancer itself.
Maple syrup, on the other hand, is a food with zero known toxicity (consumed in reasonable quantities). The paper commented on its composition as a complex food with a wide range of nutritional and phytomedicinal components and a few of its therapeutic effects:
Maple syrup is a natural sweetener consumed by men and women of all ages throughout the world. Maple syrup contains not only abundant amounts of sucrose and glucose, but also various other components such as oligosaccharides, organic acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals including manganese and zinc (8–12). Moreover, recent studies have shown that maple syrup contains various phenolic compounds such as lignans and coumarin (13,14), quebecol (15), and ginnalin (16,17). These phenolic compounds in maple syrup may possess various types of activity. An in vitro study of a butanol extract from maple syrup demonstrated inhibitory activity toward ?-glucosidase (18). Ethyl acetate extracts of maple syrup showed antioxidant activity and anti-proliferative effects against cancer cell lines (19). Ginnalin-A inhibited the cell growth of colon cancer cell lines (16). In addition, an effect of maple syrup has also been reported. The increase in plasma glucose was found to be lower after the oral administration of maple syrup than after the administration of sucrose in the Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima fatty rat, a model of type II diabetes mellitus (20).”
Incidentally, the study found that the maple syrup samples that were the darkest were most effective at inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. They describe the Canadian standards for the different grades of maple syrup as follows:
Although maple syrup is made from boiling down sap, its color, aroma and taste change due to differences in the growth conditions and season when the sap is collected. Thus, based on Canadian standards, maple syrup is classified into five grades as follows: AA (extra light), grade A (light), grade B (medium), grade C (amber), and grade D (dark) (19). The syrup typically becomes darker in color as the season progresses, and antioxidant activity is proportional to the darkening color of the maple syrup (19).”
Note above that they found the "lower" the grade the more potent an antioxidant and potential therapeutic agent.
Surprisingly, the study found that sucrose, the main component of maple syrup, inhibited colorectal cancer cell growth at a 10% concentration. They determined this by testing a sucrose concentration range between 0.1–10%, finding only that the 10% concentration had cancer inhibitory properties. This finding goes against a common viewpoint that “sugar” is unilaterally a cancer-promoting substance. Ironically, the higher concentration was inhibitory, which the authors surmised has to do with its effect on osmotic pressure in exposed cells. The researchers therefore used a 1% sucrose concentration in both the control and maple syrup groups because it did not show cytoxic/cancer-inhibiting properties at that range, to eliminate the confounding variable of sucroses own potential anti-cancer physical properties.
Another important observation is that the maple syrup had no effect on the proliferation of normal colonic epithelial cells. This property of selective cytoxicity, and which is absent in conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy interventions, is an extremely important difference when it comes to the superior safety profile of natural, food-based interventions versus conventional ones.

Who is this

Who is this

big ol baby, and where did my wittle baby go??

Ive started the process of boxing up his newborn and 0-3 month sized clothes, and unpacking his 3-6 size which is quite the project. Im pretty sure he didnt wear half of the clothing he had, partly because when its hot he just wears a diaper. Im glad that 80% of what we have is (fantastic) hand me downs. And I (will) have lots of boxes to pass along to the next friend who has a boy! ;)

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth

Matthews other top front tooth fell out early this morning (he pulled it out at 4am), so he now has an even bigger gap at the top of his mouth giving him a dracula-esque appearance.  His bottom two adult teeth have been through for a while now, and his other top front tooth has started to put in an appearance although is so far only poking slightly through.  Hes now had five of his baby teeth fall out, the same number as his friend Isaac who lost his fifth tooth yesterday.

This evening Matthew told me that three girls in year 1 are in love with him - Charlie, Gwen and Amelia - but hes not in love with any of them because he likes Seren from year 2.  Matthew used to like Charlie last year, but she was in love with Jimi - I cant keep up.  Its a bit like some kind of teen soap opera for six year olds.  Its good to hear that hes popular, though.  Apparently he was lying on the floor and the three girls were trying to pick him up.
