Red nose day

Red nose day

Monster nose

Matthew has been excited about red nose day again this year.  The theme this time is the surprise "nose in a bag", with 9 different designs available hidden in bags.  Matthew wanted to open them early, so we had a look last night.  Of course, Matthew didnt want the one he was given (a stripey burglar nose), wanting an astronaut nose and then finally deciding on a monster nose.  Daniel ended up with the astronaut nose, leaving the stripey nose and a scuba diving nose for Louise and myself.

Matthew also had his hair sprayed red again, and wore a red Star Wars top to school.

This evening, Matthew impressed me by correctly reading almost all of his "Run rabbit run" book in English - even though hes read very little English in school.

St Davids Day homework

St Davids Day homework

Matthew came home last week with a whole load of homework for St Davids Day.  Frustratingly it wasnt a great week to do it (I was working at the weekend) and I wish the teacher had given it to him earlier so we could have had a crack at some of it over the half term break.

Firstly, Matthew had to copy out a short verse in Welsh in his own handwriting.  He did this very well and actually won this part of the competition:

Secondly, Matthew had to draw a daffodil:

Finally, he also had to dress up a leek.  We had to help him with this - I made the jacket and cut up the trousers.  Louise helped Matthew paint the hair, although Matthew did do the painting himself, and drew the mouth.  Matthew also chose the eyes to stick on.  In the end, it wasnt a bad attempt and although he didnt win the competition, Louise told me that there were less impressive entries!

Sports Day Winner

Sports Day Winner

Matthew won his race at Sports Day again yesterday for the second year in a row.  Unlike last year, he only took part in one race this time which was to pick up a bean bag and put it in a bucket and then run to the finish.  He was competing against three others, two girls and his friend Jimi.

Unfortunately his excitement was short-lived, because he didnt get anything for winning aside from points, and the points were all added together at the end to determine the winning team.  Matthews blue team didnt win - instead the red team won and had a trophy, and Matthew came home very upset because he wanted the trophy.  We pointed out that he couldnt have done any better himself, but that didnt seem to help.

We managed to keep Daniel in his pushchair throughout the event, and he behaved better than expected.  I was worried that he would scream to come out and then try and run onto the track, but that didnt happen.  He did stand up a few times in his pushchair and attempt to come out, but he didnt cry much.

Barcelona House Moving Day

Barcelona House Moving Day

After countless hours of packing and moving and shoving everything we own into the trailer as we start our two weeks of Holiday homelessness...we are finally finished! It was nearly impossible trying to accomplish it all this weekend with Wrekker screaming, eating dog food, emptying all the freshly new folded and organized dresser drawers I had spent an hour on, and running out of diapers mid change. There was so much chaos and stress I didnt have time to think about all the laughter and memories that were shared in this home. I remember sitting a top the stairs telling Kason, as we were just dating, that this was the house and I didnt want to look any more. We shared our dreams of which room would "one day" be a nursery and how we would decorate the walls. We kissed goodnight at the doorstep for 4 months of sleeping apart, we spent our first night after our honeymoon opening literally an entire house full of presents until 3am, we chased each other around the island, had water fights, played hookie, I shouted from the bathroom when we found out we would soon be a party of three, I calmly came down the stairs with bags in hand the night I told him "its time!", we carefully brought our precious baby boy and surrounded our floors with bouncers and diapers, we sang primary songs and rocked back and forth as we took turns calming a crying baby. We heard Wrekker say his first words and take his first steps, we watched him race us up and down the stairs, we tickled, we made forts, we read goodnight stories, and we said endless prayers that our home would be protected and our lives would be blessed and directed and they without a doubt have been. As I mopped my way out of the front door, leaving nothing to return to, I quickly realized I was mopping my own stream of tears and the emotion flooded my heart of all the love that was made in this home. We are so blessed and so fortunate and dont deserve our Heavenly Fathers love and devotion toward our happiness and well-being. We are excited to start a new chapter of life as our family grows and we make new memories in our new home! We cant wait!

Hardy I Spent the Day at the Mobility Place Auto Dealership

Hardy I Spent the Day at the Mobility Place Auto Dealership

When it got hot here last week, I discovered that for the fourth time since Ive had my 4 year old wheelchair-modified Honda Odyssey, the air conditioning was not working again. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely love my van and would recommend it but I am getting tired of the unending air conditioning problems.
I needed to take it down to Akron (about an hour from here) to Mobility Works (the wheelchair van dealership) so that they could determine what was wrong and what they needed to do to fix it. I decided to take Hardy with me so that he could practice some public access. We got there at about 10:15 am and spent about 3 hours in the waiting room. Besides having Hardy practice laying around with things going on around him, we also spent some time working on having him pick up his leash and his mat for me. Since there wasnt anyone else in the waiting room for part of the time, I felt comfortable clicker training there.
Hardy was terrific and when we left, we practiced the new way Im going to have him get into his crate when were out by ourselves - he gets up on the backseat before I get in with my chair; then I move the crate so that the opening is to the back. When I ask him to, he jumps off the seat into the crate. Hes getting very good at it and its working well for us.
While we were down in Akron, I stopped by the Honda dealership to have our oil & filter changed and our tires rotated. Once again, Hardy spent the time in the waiting room. There were more people there but most were very polite and didnt approach Hardy or attempt to entice him to interact with them. Occasionally, I will release him with " Do you want to say hello" to go over and get petted. Usually, though, I explain that when he has his vest on and is working, it would be better to ignore him because he is very friendly and would love to say hello and get petted but then its harder for him to do his job.
Hardy hanging out at the mobility van dealership

We left there at about 2:30 and headed up to our agility class. For the first part of the class, Hardy was butt-tucking all over the ring, taking extra tunnels, not paying close attention but generally having a wonderful time! About half way through, he suddenly focused again and did an amazing job with an 18 obstacle course. He also did his first full-height teeter totter without any hesitation or reluctance! As we were leaving, our instructor, Ana asked me what wed learned ... apparently, I incorrectly answered when I said that Id learned my dog was a lunatic. Ana seemed to think the lesson was that Hardy needs a bit of time going from a long day of working and looking after me and then getting to play on the agility equipment. Im guessing thats closer to the correct answer!

Winning and losing Matthews first Sports Day

Winning and losing Matthews first Sports Day

Matthew finally had a chance to experience his first Sports Day at school yesterday after it was cancelled due to rain a couple of weeks ago.  This time around we had no problems with the weather aside from it being exceptionally warm which must have made it uncomfortable for the participants!

The event was actually held in the evening, which I thought was a good idea to allow working parents a chance to attend.  Unfortunately, as is often the case on big occasions, I wasnt very well and struggled with a fever of 39C and a sore throat but wanted to make sure I didnt miss Matthew competing.  I was relieved when the headmistress announced that it would only take 40 minutes, although slightly less relieved when the racing hadnt finished after an hour and a half!

Matthew took part in two events: a race in which he had to pick up a variety of objects and place them in a bucket, which was at the very start, and a race where he had to pick up coloured sacks and return them to a hoop at the start, which was at the end.  In his first race, he did very well and actually won - he was thrilled with this as hes always come second in practice!  In his second race, however, he picked up too many sacks and so came last as he did more than everyone else.  Unfortunately the sacks werent laid out very well and the colours didnt match either his team colour (blue) or the colour of the hoops and so it wasnt obvious which sacks he should choose.  He ended up picking up four sacks while everyone else collected only three, and was in second place until he went back for the extra sack.

At the end, there was an egg and spoon race for mums and dads, which neither Louise nor I took part in!  Louise actually said that she would have participated if she had been wearing more appropriate footwear - athletics has never been my strong point so despite Matthew seeming keen for me to race I cant see myself ever taking part!

Maybe the Sports Day in my primary school was super-organised but it all seemed a little chaotic - there were no announcements about what the races were and who was taking part, no programme (Im sure we had one when I was in school) and no medals (maybe thanks to all of David Camerons cuts: but I wont get all political!).

Other news: Matthew fell out of bed last night!  We were woken in the night by a large thud and then some crying, which didnt seem to be coming from Daniels baby monitor and so Louise went to investigate.  She found Matthew standing up in the centre of his room, looking a bit shaken, and it turns out that he fell out of bed.  We recently removed the protective foam bumper which he had been using since he moved into his full size bed when he swapped rooms with Daniel in May.

Gramps has bought Matthew a Spiderman watch and wallet!  He was wearing the watch this evening, and hopefully will take to using it as he can now tell the time.

Last day in school

Last day in school

Matthew had his last day in school day before the long summer break, and doesnt go back until the first week in September.  They were allowed to take toys into school as it was the last day, and unfortunately Matthew left his new car (Raoule Caroule) in the classroom which we only bought on Saturday.  When Louise went back to the school after discovering the car was missing, it was all locked - so it looks like he wont see it again for 6 weeks!

The year has gone quickly - it doesnt seem long since Matthew had his last day in nursery.  Hes made a lot of new friends this year, but unfortunately will need to make new friends again next year as his best friends Isaac and Ethan will be moving up to year 1 while Matthew will stay in the reception class for a second year because his birthday is just after the 1st September cut-off date.

Weve also had a copy of Matthews school class photo, which is really professionally done with the children posing on a completely white background!  It certainly beats my old primary school photos with the whole class sitting with our arms folded on a bench in the hall.

Today is The Day

Today is The Day

via

Well. Today is the day. My first official day in the USC School Business Management program. I check into the dorm today and get settled in and I report to class at 11:00am for an intense beginning into the next year of my life.

Im scared. And Im excited. Mostly, Im scared.

The people in my program, they are all established. All of them have been to college. All of them are already a CBO, Superintendent/Principal or Board member. I keep telling Bryan that I am way, way out of my league.

But I got into the program. The coordinators saw something in me that they believe can complete the program. Despite my doubts and insecurities, I wouldnt have been accepted if I wasnt a viable candidate.

I have to keep reminding myself of that. Im there to learn. What I dont know they will teach me. What I do know will lay the ground work. I can do this.

Wish me luck!

Hardy had another big day at Dogs in the Park

Hardy had another big day at Dogs in the Park

John posted this last night on Facebook:

"Hardy Update: Little chocolate lab enjoyed 2 Puppy Classes, followed by a great outdoor puppy walk with friends Brody, Gulliver, Lexie, Cooper, Akira, Cheyenne and Lacy! Then the little guy protested through the 7pm puppy class - telling us all how grossly unfair it was to not be his turn."

When I pointed out that with four hours of puppy class and puppy walk, Hardy should have been sound asleep at 7:00, John responded:

"Yes, youre absolutely right, Linda! And by staying in his crate during the 7pm class and sleeping through parts of it, Hardy is beginning to learn both how to take turns, and how to self regulate. BTW, he thoroughly impressed his classmates with a fantastic whistle recall from out of group play, in the lake and out of sight! He is one well trained and smart little pup!"

Since I did the homework after the Instant Recall workshop in July, and actually blew the whistle and then treated 50 times in one session each day for a week, Im hoping that helped his ability to do such a great job with the recall!

I understand also that although his eyes are still somewhat goopy, they are getting better and dont seem to bother him at all!

Also, not that Im counting but in 11 days, well see the little puddly in person again!

What a difference a day makes!

What a difference a day makes!

I was going to write yesterday telling Hardy that we loved him and that he was a good puppy but that we werent liking some of his behavior and it wasnt that he was bad ... just some of what he did was not-so-good. (I remember being very careful with our children to let them know that no matter what they did, we loved them and working to not make them feel like "bad kids", even when we werent happy with something they had done.)
As a reminder, Hardy is 23 weeks old (5 months and one week) and has definitely hit adolescence! Generally, though, he has been a biddable, calm, balanced young guy! Until yesterday, that is, when he woke up a butt head (hopefully, calling him that wont give him an inferiority complex because he heard it quite a bit for one day). We have some friends (Patsy, Bennie and Patsys mother, Ruth) visiting with us from Atlanta for the weekend. Hardy had done beautifully meeting everyone Thursday evening. He said hello pretty politely and then laid down by my feet until we went to bed. Yesterday morning, though, he raced out of the bedroom to leap onto Ruths lap (of course, he selected the oldest person with the most tissue-like skin). Thankfully, Ruth wasnt hurt and is a good-sport - she just expressed surprise that he licked her in the face. That particular indiscretion earned him an immediate "time-out" to his crate, instead of any sort of warning. Having begun the day in such a spectacular way, Hardy went on to try "counter surfing" for the first time ever - I dont think our reaction was exactly what he was hoping for; then he went cat hunting for awhile, paying no attention when we reminded him that if only one party is having fun, its not a good game; and he generally spent the day testing limits and checking to make sure none of the rules had changed.
Then this morning, from Hardys point of view, of course, it was a new day so we worked at letting yesterday go as well. Brent, Hardy and I had our 2nd AKC Puppy STAR class over at Fortunate Fido. We stopped on the way and picked up my partially repaired power chair. Hardy got out of the van and did a great job of peeing on command. During class, we worked on "four on the floor" greetings; handling, particularly with clipping/grinding toe nails; sending the puppies to take treats away from us and using a toy as motivation. Hardy did a super job - he was a little star! On our way home, we stopped at our local MetroParks (North Chagrin Reservation) and took a walk around the lake at Sanctuary Marsh. Hardy was absolutely amazing - for almost the entire time, he walked beautifully on a loose leash and worked well with left and right cues. He even walked confidently on a loose leash past a German Shepherd who was barking at him. It didnt matter whether Brent was in front or behind us, Hardy kept the leash loose. I must admit that not only was I delighted with my big brown puppy but I was absolutely amazed!
A friend of mine stopped by with her service dog - the first time a dog has come into Hardys home. When they met, Hardy was pretty polite - he wasnt overly enthusiastic but when he went to sniff her butt, she objected in a pretty dramatic fashion. He backed right off and for the rest of the visit, he offered her toys and play bowed several times but from a distance. When his advances were ignored, he came over and laid on my feet. Hardy also interacted much more politely with our company today! All in all, Hardy was great! My, what a difference a day makes!

Disrupted day out

Disrupted day out

As Daniel was in nursery yesterday, I had planned to take Matthew out for the day, and was hoping to take him on the train to Kidwelly Castle.  Unfortunately, the first part of my plan was disrupted by the weather and high tides, which had closed the railway line, but according to the website the castle was open so we drove there.  When we arrived, although the shop was open, the castle was closed due to the high winds, so that part of my plan also failed!  After giving Matthew a choice of what to do, we ended up going to a play centre, which he enjoyed so the day wasnt a complete disaster!  He actually went on a lot of the activities alone, which I was very impressed with considering none of his friends were there, but we also did some things together including playing table football and fighting each other with the foam ball guns.

We have taken down the Christmas decorations today, and discovered only two chocolate Santas remaining on the tree. Im not sure how many were in the pack - perhaps 8 - but I know that Matthew has only had 3 legitimately, and he owned up when I confronted him about an empty wrapper which was hanging on the tree a while back, so Im wondering if hes had the rest and cleverly disposed of the evidence!

Mothers Day

Mothers Day

We had such a wonderful day today! We went on a fun family adventure to San Francisco, although Connor wasnt too excited. He didnt really make a peep the whole day, except to let us know when he was hungry.
After we got home, we saw Papa Jim and Nama Barb. Connor must have been extra excited to see them because he gave GREAT smiles and giggles! Real laughter, it was so So cute!
