Back to the now big brown boy!
Back to the now big brown boy!
Its been awhile since I posted and my recent ones may seem somewhat off topic. I considered not writing anything about our cat, Millie, on this blog but she was an important part of (Laurel and) Hardys life so I decided to include her.
Today is the last day of March and we have snow on the ground again. Ive been feeling pretty cranky recently - its been a long winter and Ive been feeling kind of crummy due to an ongoing sinus infection since November. That means we havent been getting out as much as Id like and although Hardy and I are working on manners, basic obedience, public access skills and task training at home; I know that isnt the same as getting out and about.
We made it to a CPE Agility trial the weekend of March 11th - 13th. Laurel had a chance to compete with the teeter and the weaves for the first time which was very exciting! Unfortunately, I developed an uncontrollable nose bleed that went until Monday afternoon. Monday morning we went to my doctor who sent us to an Urgent Care that sent us to an ER. The MD there tried cauterizing my nose but that didnt work so she packed it. By Thursday, I was sleeping about 23 hours a day and the ENT told me that it was due to the blood loss, would take about a month to recover from and that we wouldnt be able to work through the ongoing infection for another month because of the other issues with the nose bleed and packing.
Hardy had a good time at the trials - he is learning about wonderful, quiet, calm crate behavior even in the midst of over-the-top dogs. Brent took him for some long walks around Janet and Scotts beautiful property and he got to work with me in the training hall. He has learned the "What Else Can You Do?" game and has become very good at it. He was wowing people with all the different behaviors he can come up to throw at me when I ask him, "What else can you do?" Each behavior has to be a new one that he hasnt done before during the sequence.
I had complained to my service dog trainer, Sue Alexander, because it seemed like Hardy might be "marking". When I described what he was doing - urinating occasionally inside the training hall but without any leg raising or other deliberate behavior, Sue said that didnt sound like marking and suggested that I take in a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. I made arrangements to do that on Saturday and to our surprise, Friday night Laurel was up from about 3:00 on doing multiple urinations outside. When we collected a sample from her to take with us, it was blood. We were stunned to find that both our Labs had urinary tract infections! Laurel obviously didnt feel well; Hardy didnt seem much affected! They each have a 20 day supply of Keflex! We asked our vet if it was okay to go to the C-WAGS trials at Medina Kennel Club the next day and he thought it would be fine.
I decided to try Hardy in the Zoom 1 class (which has no stationary exercises). We havent been working on rally much but Hardy can do all the exercises and I thought it would be a good place to see where he is right now. I was fully prepared to take out treats and use it as a run-thru. We went through many of the exercises Friday afternoon and he did very well (but of course, we were at Canine Affair - a place he knows and feels very comfortable at).
Laurel and I had 4 classes before Hardys debut and I will admit to being quite frustrated because of some issues with the facility. Keeping in mind that Im the only person who competes using a power wheelchair (or any type of wheelchair, actually), the fact that the rings were very small and the mats rolled under my chair doesnt really affect anyone else too much. Laurel was obviously not herself (not sure whether it was the UTI or the rolling mats and other environmental issues) but she still tried her best for me and we Qd in 3 out of 4 tries (our NQ occurred when I got completely lost on course). Ill probably try competing there one more time when I know Laurel is feeling fine and see how she reacts - if she is still stressed, Ill skip those trials with her in the future.
Im really hoping that the weather will break and that the MDs and I will figure out what is going on with the nose bleed/sinus infection issues so that Hardy and I can work more consistently away from the house! I can tell you though, that even with our setbacks; as Hardys 1st birthday approaches in April, he is a lovely, funny, enthusiastic young man who continues to show all sorts of promise to become my service dog (first as Laurels partner and then her successor) as well as my dog sport partner!

Big weekend at Canine Affair Centers C WAGS Trials
Big weekend at Canine Affair Centers C WAGS Trials
This weekend we attended a C-WAGS trial at Canine Affair. Laurel and I competed, I was the C-WAGS Rep and on the trial committee. That made for some busy & long days but as always, it was tons of fun and great to see old friends and make some new ones. Brent took Hardy over to the AKC Puppy STAR class Saturday morning where they worked on "leave it" and loose leash walking before doing a little pre-agility - working around the equipment and going through jump standards without a bar and jumping onto the table on the floor. Then, they came and spent the rest of the weekend at the trials with Laurel and me. Hardy did a great job lounging quietly in his crate; coming out occasionally to meet and visit with people and to do some things with all the people, crates and dogs around.
Obedience was on Saturday with Rally on Sunday and because until last week Laurel had been off since Labor Day due to the ruptured ligament in her foot, I wasnt sure what to expect with her. From the very first class, it was obvious that she was very happy to be back! She ended up Qing in all 10 classes with some nice placements - 4 firsts, 4 seconds and a third with half her scores 99 (out of 100) or higher!
All in all, a great weekend! Heather always does a great job as trial secretary and general go-to-person! Mary and everyone else with Canine Affair have a lovely facility and are terrific hosts! And as always with C-WAGS, the competitors are supportive and encouraging to each other. When Laurel wasnt competing, she relaxed and slept in her crate and Hardy already has that skill. Laurel was thrilled to see all her friends again and it was fun to introduce Hardy to everyone. I was proud of them both!

Big Bang cancels anticipated guerrilla concert
Big Bang cancels anticipated guerrilla concert

Article: Why Big Bangs guerrilla concert cancellation is so disappointing
Source: Sports Seoul via Naver

1. [+3,149, -85] Can Korean fans please get a concert thats meant for just us? Cant we get a nationwide tour or some fan meets? I know that theyre too big for tours and stuff but isnt it about time in their careers that they focus on their fans on smaller stages too?
2. [+2,504, -55] Please think of the Korean fans ?????
3. [+2,391, -138] YG has to be insane. Theyre the ones who linked the news of the guerrilla concert on their official Twitter, why are they saying theyre canceling it because it was leaked? Do they think us fans are fools? Everyone knows that OSEN articles = official YG articles so why lie about something they never even planned on doing? Please let Big Bang go from your company.
4. [+1,916, -79] Ridiculous that YGs doing this when theyre reliant on Big Bangs income
5. [+1,896, -120] I doubt YG had any intention of going through with it, theyre just acting like they had to cancel it...
6. [+357, -5] Psy pulled off his guerrilla concert just fine with 100,000 people at the city hall square
7. [+367, -10] Once they leave for the army, we wont be able to see them for such a long time. Would it kill YG to let them promote in Korea and do a few fan meets? For all the time theyre spending overseas instead ??? I know that they make so much more money over there but its the Korean fans and their success in Korea that brought them to this point in their career. Its unfair that were getting the short end of the stick because they make less money here.
8. [+300, -5] Please be more considerate of the Korean VIPs, this is so frustrating

Big Weekend for Hardy!
Big Weekend for Hardy!
After spending the last couple weeks dealing with Brents parents affairs in St. Louis and getting ready for a van full of stuff to arrive from there, we took Laurel and Hardy on an enforced relaxation trip to Saratoga Springs, NY, to see our son, Devin and his boyfriend, Anthony, dance with the New York City Ballet at the outdoor performing arts center there (SPAC). Saratoga Springs is in upstate NY (the finger lakes region) and is just beautiful! SPAC is in a national park - an amphitheater with a balcony in a gorgeous setting! We love going there each summer and really missed being there last summer when I was up in Canada. Laurel has already gotten to attend many performances there so this trip was Hardys opportunity to practice his public access skills while watching (and/or sleeping through) some of the best ballet performances anywhere!
We left early Friday morning since its about a 9 hour drive. Unfortunately, the fan for our A/C failed when we passing through Erie, PA, so we had our windows open for most of the trip! Fortunately, both Labs love to travel so they were settled in their crates but we had to watch Hardy because his crate is on the floor of the van next to my chair. Since hes brown, he tends to get warmer than Laurel and we were worried that there wasnt a lot of circulation down there. Laurels crates on top of his and she had a great view (and smell) with the wind blowing through her crate. Normally, she just sleeps but she was up and sniffing the air instead. We arrived at the Adirondack Inn about 3:30. We decided to stay there because they are reasonably priced, located very close to SPAC (as a matter of fact, many dancers stay there) and is very dog friendly. Behind each unit is a back yard and it was just perfect for us. We had a unit at the end of one section and my mom & stepdad were right next door to us.

My Aunt and Uncle from upstate New York drove down Saturday morning to see the matinee performance. We mostly relaxed and chatted in our rooms until we headed to SPAC again. Laurel was very happy to spend time in her crate in our room and Hardy was thrilled to be dressed and heading out again. When we arrived at SPAC, he clearly knew what his job was and headed right down to the pavilion to find our seats. This time, we were seated close to the stage on the far right side (by the stage door). The bad thing was that we had an obstructed view but what we could see was very close. Hardy settled right down again and stayed awake for a bit watching the other people. When Devin & Anthony came onstage for the first time though, he was sound asleep again. However, the last piece was The Magic Flute and Hardy was awake for that. He sat and watched the stage and when Devin came on, he got very interested. I actually think he would have gone on stage if I had allowed it (and yes, we were that close to the stage). At the end of the performance, when I told him we were going to get Devin and Anthony, he headed right to the stage door. (We have been working on having him find the van for me when I forget where it is).
Patiently waiting for Devin and Anthony to come on stage!
Still waiting! Do you know where they are?
Oh bummer, sound asleep again!
We left both Labs home for dinner since we were going to a Japanese Hibachi restaurant (one place I wont take a service dog since there are no places under a table for them and there is open fire when the chefs are doing their tricks).
Sunday, we met for breakfast and left the Labs in the room (Hardy still isnt a fan of being left in his crate instead of being able to come with us so he needs more practice) and then we just hung out and relaxed for the rest of the day.
Monday morning, we headed home - thankfully, an uneventful trip. Tuesday, the moving truck arrived so we are back in the land of unpacking and rearranging ... not the Labs favorite place to be. If the weather would cooperate, we could go for walks but its either been raining and/or oppressively hot. Since I dont do well with heat, we avoid it whenever possible!
Overall, Im very proud of my chocolate boy! At this point, I am sure that he would pass a public access test and am about ready to take his "in training" status away. Ill talk to our service dog trainer before we do that but I think he would easily qualify as a full public access service dog at this point. Having two working dogs is really a privilege and blessing for me!

YG denies rumors of Big Bang enlisting together
YG denies rumors of Big Bang enlisting together

Article: [Exclusive] Big Bang to enlist together?... members agree to minimize hiatus
Source: Sports Donga via Nate
1. [+657, -28] Im most curious about whether GD will serve active duty or not
2. [+647, -44] GD and TOP are 100% going to serve in public service
3. [+437, -23] Every man in Korea must serve in the army but celebrities get praise for going active duty but even then some do all they can to get out of that
4. [+33, -5] Why do I feel like GD doesnt match army service at all ???? I want to see him in service
5. [+22, -2] I bet Big Bangs army hiatus will be shorter than the hiatus between their albums ???????????
-

Source: Naver
1. [+2,681, -45] Yeah, please just enlist all together if you guys are going. Weve waited hiatuses of three years even though it wasnt for the army so we can handle it ??
2. [+1,776, -43] Yeah, that seems like a good idea ??
3. [+1,653, -35] They have to serve anyway so they might as well enlist together and cut down on the hiatus for their fans... It seems like a good idea but it did seem like their CEO wanted them to serve separately which would take 10 years before the group is whole again ?? I hope the members push with their decision to serve together
4. [+1,116, -34] I can wait so dont worry and serve ??
5. [+210, -6] Big Bang rarely promotes on TV anyway so a hiatus of a year and 8 months probably wont even feel like a hiatus to fans ??
-
Article: YG, "Big Bang will not be enlisting as 5... GD and Taeyang have solo plans next year"
Source: Star News via Nate
1. [+186, -6] Itd be so much better to just enlist together and cut down on hiatus
2. [+164, -18] Whatever the case, I think GD will be in public service no matter what
3. [+47, -6] Just send them all together. It might suck at first but its the fastest way to make the group whole and promoting together again. Thats why YG shouldve paid more attention to supporting rookie talent instead of relying on Big Bang so much. Look at SM, TVXQ makes up a bulk of their income but they have so many more stars to rely on that TVXQ could enlist at the same time.
4. [+11, -4] If they all enlist in active duty together, itll do so much for improving their image and cut down on the hiatus time before theyre whole again. You only serve once, why not make it the best?
5. [+7, -0] I wonder how much theyre hating having to serve right now ???
-

Source: Naver
1. [+1,236, -7] They have long hiatuses anyway, why cant they all serve during?
2. [+565, -7] What the.. this is a mess of communication
3. [+414, -9] ????????
4. [+307, -20] They have to serve anyway, just go at the right time~~~ but I did hear from others with experience that enlisting at the same time with your friends is not a good idea, it usually puts a dent in your friendship..
5. [+151, -6] I can see why YG wouldnt want them to... their main income will be cut off ?

Hardy had another big day at Dogs in the Park
Hardy had another big day at Dogs in the Park
John posted this last night on Facebook:
"Hardy Update: Little chocolate lab enjoyed 2 Puppy Classes, followed by a great outdoor puppy walk with friends Brody, Gulliver, Lexie, Cooper, Akira, Cheyenne and Lacy! Then the little guy protested through the 7pm puppy class - telling us all how grossly unfair it was to not be his turn."
When I pointed out that with four hours of puppy class and puppy walk, Hardy should have been sound asleep at 7:00, John responded:
"Yes, youre absolutely right, Linda! And by staying in his crate during the 7pm class and sleeping through parts of it, Hardy is beginning to learn both how to take turns, and how to self regulate. BTW, he thoroughly impressed his classmates with a fantastic whistle recall from out of group play, in the lake and out of sight! He is one well trained and smart little pup!"Since I did the homework after the Instant Recall workshop in July, and actually blew the whistle and then treated 50 times in one session each day for a week, Im hoping that helped his ability to do such a great job with the recall!
I understand also that although his eyes are still somewhat goopy, they are getting better and dont seem to bother him at all!
Also, not that Im counting but in 11 days, well see the little puddly in person again!

Poopin on the Potty is a Big Deal in our House
Poopin on the Potty is a Big Deal in our House
Wait, what?
Oh yes. This guy:
This guy, pooped on the potty.
Over the past couple months, weve been trying to get Tyler used to the potty. Were not super consistent, but generally weve been getting him to sit on the potty at least once a day. Mostly just for familiarity purposes. We havent really expected him to actually go largely because when we sit him on the potty its typically during the process of changing an already soiled diaper.
Anyhow, this morning when changing him and getting him dressed, he told me he wanted to go sit on the potty. I was already running late and wasnt really in the mood for the potty this morning, but Im pretty sure theres a line in the parent handbook, in the potty training section, that says something like "Never deny your childs request to sit on the potty."
So off to the bathroom we go and I sit him on the potty and he proceeds to play with the potty seat and his boy parts and just generally having a good ol time sittin there grinning at me. Im getting impatient and keep asking him every 7 seconds if hes done. He keeps saying no. So I told him I needed to go finish getting ready for work and he could stay on the potty as long as he likes.
I go back to my bathroom and Im not in there 30 seconds before he hollers in his sing song voice, "I DOO-OOONE!" (When did he grow up???) So, with a big eye roll, I walk back to his bathroom and he says, "I poop." Whaaaaat?
I pick his little butt up off the toilet and sure enough, there is a gift staring back at me! (Youre welcome for not posting a picture of it.)
However, Im immediately skeptical cause its not usual for his sissy to forget to flush the toilet after shes done using it. I checked his butt for evidence, found some and commenced with the celebrating, high fiving, and fist bumping.
Then we had to call Daddy and tell him. And in all the excitement about pooping, I forgot to have the kids tell their Daddy happy birthday. My bad. But it was poop! In the proper location! Can you blame me for being distracted?
We did try to make it up to Daddy by having some cookies and creme pie for dessert tonight (Lily picked it out). We put 3 blue candles (dont ask me why 3...Lily said that was the right amount) and all sang Happy Birthday, which is to say, I sang it and Lily chimed in at the very end. Tyler just kept sticking his fingers in the pie, too anxious to wait until singing was over to eat some.

Happy Birthday Babe! So cool that you can share your birthday with such a monumental milestone in your sons life. Ha!

The Big TWENTY FOUR!
The Big TWENTY FOUR!
Today was my sweet, wonderful, husbands birthday! We have had the most wonderful month of October building up to this day and so I cant believe it is finally here! This morning I woke up and made Kas his lunch and I was so sad that we both had to go to work and be apart. While I was at school I blew up a bunch of balloons and put them in bags so I could run them home during lunch and decorate our house. I also made him a cute sign to hang up too! If it would have been up to me I would have decorated the front yard, all the street lights to and from work, and then had a plane flying over head with a big long banner saying, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY KASON!" He thinks I am a crazy lady, but I just love birthdays! I think they are so special and I think everyone deserves to feel the most special they could possibly feel all day (week) (or month in my case) long! When I got home from school we of course went to Cal Ranch ha ha ha I told you that is what he would want to do! :) Then we went to dinner at Red Robin and had yummy german chocolate cupcakes at Kelton and Kellis house. We had the most wonderful surprise! Kiley decided to come down just to spend the night with Kason and so we got to see new baby Ryland. He is ADORABLE! I got to hold him all night and couldnt get enough of him!

The Polar Express and Big Splash Adventure
The Polar Express and Big Splash Adventure
Back in September, Joel found out about the Polar Express train ride in French Lick from one of his coworkers. I immediately got on the website and the whole thing was nearly sold out. There were only a couple dates left with availability so I promptly booked it.
We also had tickets to the Big Splash Adventure water park in French Lick so we decided to make it an overnight trip.
The week of our trip, we had the kids watch The Polar Express movie - Lily watched it pretty intently but Tyler wasnt too interested. These days, if its not Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, he doesnt really want any part of it.
We also read the book.
We were prepared and ready to go!
The train ride was at 5:30 on Friday, two hours away in French Lick so we ended up taking some vacation time so we could get on the road after lunch and not have to rush too much. We arrived in plenty of time to check into the hotel, change in to our jammies and get a little something to eat for the kids before heading to the train station.
There was an activity tent set up where the kiddos created letters to Santa. Lily asked for a microphone (as if she needs any help with the volume of her voice), Elsa, and Baby Elsa. Tyler just stamped all over his paper. No intel gathered as to what he wants for Christmas.
They also left a message for Santa on a huge dry erase board. Actually, I think they sabotaged a bunch of other kids messages to Santa.
There was a Thomas The Train set up and the kids played with that a little. Tyler got one of these sets for his birthday from Meme and Papaw and he loves it!
It was getting close to time to board the train. The kids were getting super excited (and SUPER IMPATIENT). I told Lily she had to try to potty before the train and she completely melted down and threw a fit about that. One of these days, shes gonna trust me when I say its better to pee pee now than to wait. Shell probably be 21 years old before that happens, but itll happen.
Then we went to stand in line for the train. That. Was. Torture. If I said it once, I said it 347 times: "Guys, its not time to get on the train yet." "We have to wait until the conductor says its time." "We have to wait our turn." "Just a few more minutes." "Please be patient."

Then FINALLY. It was time. We were greeted by Santas elves. But according to Lily: "They arent REALLY REAL elves. They are just kids dressed up." Yeah, I kid you not. She called them out.

Then we got all situated and tried to take some pictures. Neither kid really wanted to cooperate on this. Family selfie is a classic. I think Ill blow it up and hang it in our living room. It so accurately paints a portrait of what our lives are like.

The train got rolling and the conductor came by to punch our tickets. He did it like in the movie, sort of, and punched a bazillion holes in the kids tickets.

Then they came through the train car with hot chocolate and cookies. The kiddos thought that was great. Once again, Lily called out the elves. "Those are the same girls but except now they have on cooker clothes."

After the cookies and hot chocolate, there was a lot of dancing and singing in the aisle. Lily was all about it. As soon as the elves started dancing, she immediately jumped up and wanted to know if she could dance too.

And then we got to the "turn around" point - aka, the North Pole (which was a few sheds decorated with Christmas lights). We saw Santa standing out there, waving. Then we started the trip back. And Santa was not with us. And Lily was acting sooooo disappointed. "Wheres Santa? Are we not going to see Santa on this train?" Joel and I were confused because we thought we were going to see Santa on the train. But then a few minutes later, he made his appearance.
And oh my goodness. I dont think it was disappointment we were seeing before from Lily. I think she was anxious about Santa coming on the train and thats why she was asking questions. Because this is what happened when she saw him.

And Tyler wasnt much better. Big tears. Instantly.

So when Santa got to our seats, Joel and I got our picture with him. (Hey, we paid $129 for this ride and by golly we were getting our moneys worth!)

The kiddos got their sleigh bells and sat stiff as a board in their seats for another 10 minutes until Santa was off the train. And then they immediately returned to singing and dancing the aisles. It was literally like a light switch event.

After the train ride concluded, we headed off to get dinner for the big people. We went to a local place called 33 Brick Street and had the most amazing hamburger Ive had in a very, very long time.
After dinner, the kiddos walked down the side walk hand in hand. Ahh, these are the moments. They stopped in front of a musical Christmas light display for a little oohing, ahhing and dancing.

Then back to the hotel for the night. It was pretty late at this point - almost 9:00 - so we had only a little trouble getting the kids to settle down and go to sleep. But did that late hour mean the kids slept in in the morning? Uh, no. Tyler was up at 5:00. God love him, but we have GOT to figure out how to reset his biological clock for a more acceptable wake up time.
Its a long time from 5:00am to 7:30am when breakfast opens...and a long time from 7:30am to 9:30am when the water park opens. By the time we got to the water park, I think Tyler was ready for a nap.

The kiddos scattered in two different directions (and Joel wasnt with us yet because he was taking our overnight stuff to the car) and I thought I might lose my mind in the first 10 seconds. I didnt have the lay of the land yet and it made me a nervous wreck! But I got it under control, Joel showed back up and we each took a kid.

Tyler lasted about an hour and then he went in to total meltdown mode. He was freezing and tired and that was not a good combination. That water was none too warm. I was expecting it to be a lot warmer or even humid inside and it wasnt at all. I saw lots of blue-lipped kiddos. Joel was cold and kind of over it too so he took Tyler. They dried off and sat on the side while Lily and I continued to play. You had to be 42" to ride the "big slides" and Lily is EXACTLY 42". She was a a real trooper and tried 3 out of the 4 big slides. I was surprise by her adventurous nature. Shes not usually like that.
After a couple more hours, Tyler was so tired and hungry he was melting down big time and it was time to go. Lily was so disappointed. I think she could have easily stayed and played another couple hours.
So we headed on back home. Tyler was passed out in the car before ever got out of the parking lot. We got some drive through and tried to wake Tyler up to eat it but he wasnt having it. He took two sips of milk and then promptly passed back out. Lily ate her lunch and swore up and down she wasnt tired. 10 minutes later she was snoring. Both kids slept hard all the way until we pulled in the driveway.
What a fun time!
Then we went to stand in line for the train. That. Was. Torture. If I said it once, I said it 347 times: "Guys, its not time to get on the train yet." "We have to wait until the conductor says its time." "We have to wait our turn." "Just a few more minutes." "Please be patient."
