Back to the now big brown boy!
Back to the now big brown boy!
Its been awhile since I posted and my recent ones may seem somewhat off topic. I considered not writing anything about our cat, Millie, on this blog but she was an important part of (Laurel and) Hardys life so I decided to include her.
Today is the last day of March and we have snow on the ground again. Ive been feeling pretty cranky recently - its been a long winter and Ive been feeling kind of crummy due to an ongoing sinus infection since November. That means we havent been getting out as much as Id like and although Hardy and I are working on manners, basic obedience, public access skills and task training at home; I know that isnt the same as getting out and about.
We made it to a CPE Agility trial the weekend of March 11th - 13th. Laurel had a chance to compete with the teeter and the weaves for the first time which was very exciting! Unfortunately, I developed an uncontrollable nose bleed that went until Monday afternoon. Monday morning we went to my doctor who sent us to an Urgent Care that sent us to an ER. The MD there tried cauterizing my nose but that didnt work so she packed it. By Thursday, I was sleeping about 23 hours a day and the ENT told me that it was due to the blood loss, would take about a month to recover from and that we wouldnt be able to work through the ongoing infection for another month because of the other issues with the nose bleed and packing.
Hardy had a good time at the trials - he is learning about wonderful, quiet, calm crate behavior even in the midst of over-the-top dogs. Brent took him for some long walks around Janet and Scotts beautiful property and he got to work with me in the training hall. He has learned the "What Else Can You Do?" game and has become very good at it. He was wowing people with all the different behaviors he can come up to throw at me when I ask him, "What else can you do?" Each behavior has to be a new one that he hasnt done before during the sequence.
I had complained to my service dog trainer, Sue Alexander, because it seemed like Hardy might be "marking". When I described what he was doing - urinating occasionally inside the training hall but without any leg raising or other deliberate behavior, Sue said that didnt sound like marking and suggested that I take in a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. I made arrangements to do that on Saturday and to our surprise, Friday night Laurel was up from about 3:00 on doing multiple urinations outside. When we collected a sample from her to take with us, it was blood. We were stunned to find that both our Labs had urinary tract infections! Laurel obviously didnt feel well; Hardy didnt seem much affected! They each have a 20 day supply of Keflex! We asked our vet if it was okay to go to the C-WAGS trials at Medina Kennel Club the next day and he thought it would be fine.
I decided to try Hardy in the Zoom 1 class (which has no stationary exercises). We havent been working on rally much but Hardy can do all the exercises and I thought it would be a good place to see where he is right now. I was fully prepared to take out treats and use it as a run-thru. We went through many of the exercises Friday afternoon and he did very well (but of course, we were at Canine Affair - a place he knows and feels very comfortable at).
Laurel and I had 4 classes before Hardys debut and I will admit to being quite frustrated because of some issues with the facility. Keeping in mind that Im the only person who competes using a power wheelchair (or any type of wheelchair, actually), the fact that the rings were very small and the mats rolled under my chair doesnt really affect anyone else too much. Laurel was obviously not herself (not sure whether it was the UTI or the rolling mats and other environmental issues) but she still tried her best for me and we Qd in 3 out of 4 tries (our NQ occurred when I got completely lost on course). Ill probably try competing there one more time when I know Laurel is feeling fine and see how she reacts - if she is still stressed, Ill skip those trials with her in the future.
Im really hoping that the weather will break and that the MDs and I will figure out what is going on with the nose bleed/sinus infection issues so that Hardy and I can work more consistently away from the house! I can tell you though, that even with our setbacks; as Hardys 1st birthday approaches in April, he is a lovely, funny, enthusiastic young man who continues to show all sorts of promise to become my service dog (first as Laurels partner and then her successor) as well as my dog sport partner!

The tooth fairys back!
The tooth fairys back!
After several weeks of complaining about a wobbly tooth, Matthews bottom right lateral incisor (thats one of the teeth next to the front two in plain English) fell out this afternoon. It has been nearly a year since his last tooth fell out, and hes had a full set of teeth for most of the year as he now has two front lower adult teeth. He has complained about his top two baby teeth feeling loose as well for a while now, but they are still intact at the moment!

Hello Were Back!
Hello Were Back!
To say that the last year has been crazy would be a complete UNDERSTATEMENT! We have been having so much fun, being so incredibly busy! I feel overwhelmed because when I do something.. I want to do it right, and so it makes me insane that I couldnt catch up on this blog if I seriously dedicated all my time to it! I decided what a better way to catch you up than to just insert the pages from our yearly scrapbook that I make. I am on our third one, and they mean so much to me! If I was smart, I would have been posting them on here all along! It also really helps me complete my pages when I stay up on journaling through our blog. So this is more for me, than you! However, I hope you enjoy our crazy and adventurous life! We sure are!

Back in the Saddle
Back in the Saddle
Last week, before the trike-a-thon, I suggested we take a little bike ride around the "short loop" in the neighborhood so Lily could get some practice on her bike. I was feeling adventurous and wanted to see if Tyler could handle riding on the tag-a-long bike so off we went.
I was nervous as all get out with Tyler on the back! His feet just reached the pedals. He was so excited to be riding with me. I went really slow (for his sake and mine) and he did really good back there! I dont think hes ready for a ride thats more than about 1/2 mile long or on actual roads - or maybe its me thats not ready because its pretty stressful. He is only 2.5 years old.
All was going really well. And then we hit about the half way point. Lily was riding on the sidewalk in front of me. I was giving her wide berth and was about 30 yards behind her. She was flying - well flying is relative, but she was going pretty fast for a newby bike rider - and were we approaching a left turn. She got nervous, saw the turn and forgot to brake - tried to turn and crashed. I saw this coming about 10 seconds ahead of time but it was just too late for me to do anything....I watched helplessly as she fell to the ground. Mommy heart broken.
She skinned her knee pretty good, scraped up her hands and hit her head. Check out the photo of her on the bike - youll see her helmet is loose and catty wompus on her head. She did that because it was "too tight." Well when she fell, the helmet did her no good because it was sitting too far back on her head. Mommy guilt pangs ensued when I saw a little bit of road rash on her forehead. I learned a lesson about making sure the helmet was actually secured properly before we take off.
Anyway, now for the silver lining. Since Lilys injuries were just some scrapes, Joel and I gently encouraged her to get back on the bike. She cried and was upset for about 5 minutes. Mostly cause she was scared and little shocked from the crash. But after about 5 minutes, Joel convinced her to just sit on the bike. She did. Still pretty upset and insisting she didnt want to ride anymore. But Joel kept encouraging her and got her to just pedal a few feet. Then got her to pedal a little more. And after about another 5 minutes, she was riding again.
I. Was. So. Proud. And I told her so about 47 times as we completed the short loop and made our way back home. I think she learned a couple really valuable lessons. Some practical like SLOW DOWN before you turn on your bike and some with life long applicability like when you fall, you can be brave and get right back in the saddle.

Jingles Back
Jingles Back
Our Elf on the Shelf, Jingle, made his appearance last week. We also introduced a Christmas Countdown calendar which is providing us with lots of fun activities and surprises throughout the month.
After we read the Elf of the Shelf book together, Lily decided to read it to us. She was hilarious. She was making some things up and recalling some parts pretty accurately by looking at the pictures.
We are not off to a very good start with Jingle - both in terms of creativity and simply just remembering to the move the damn thing every night. Once we forgot and Lily freaked out.
Lily: "Oh no! Jingle didnt go see Santa!! Why did he not move?"
Me (thinking fast on my feet): "Uuuhhh, oh, Jingle told me he was REALLY tired last night and he decided he needed his rest and that he was going to go see Santa during the day today while youre at school."
Lily: "Oh."
Sadly, our Christmas calendar seems to be causing more fights than bringing joy and the spirit of Christmas. The kids take turns each night to open the little drawer. Sometimes theres a present for them to share and this is where things rapidly decline. They will open the present together very nicely and then the tug of war begins. The other day, Tyler won the tug of war and then wouldnt share the book. The Story of Christmas, no less.
Me: "Tyler, you need to share the book. Come sit over here with Lily and I and well read it together."
Tyler: "I NOT!"
Me: "Tyler, Im going to count to three. You need to share the book or youre going to time out. One."
Tyler: "NO! I NOT!"
Me: "Two."
Tyler: "No. I NOOOOOOOOOOOT."
Me: "Three. Ok, Tyler, thats three. Give me the book."
Tyler: "NOOO!"
Me: "TIME OUT!"
And then Lily and I enjoyed The Story of Christmas with Tyler screaming from time out in his room.
Terrible twos much?
Sometimes the Advent calendar offers fun activities like decorating a Gingerbread House - otherwise known as, "Daddy squirt the icing right here! In my mouth!" Im pretty sure the kids ate nearly as much candy as they applied to the house.
Tyler in particular, was far more interested in sucking candies up off the kitchen table than he was in putting candies on the house. At least he added a little challenge to the whole thing.
One night, when Meme and Papaw were here, the activity was writing letters to Santa. I was so happy to have Meme and Papaw help with this one. I was running out of patience that day and it was the perfect grandparent activity.
Sometimes, like tonight, the Advent Calendar is more about the spirit of Christmas instead of presents and activities. Tonight, the slip of paper in the little drawer said, "Do something nice for your brother/sister." Lily was like, "Whaaaaaaaaat? What number is that under the tree?" (Cause when there is a present, its a numbered wrapped gift under the tree). Lily ended up picking up a few items and putting them away for her brother even though she didnt get them out. Shes usually VERY BIG on "I didnt get it out so I dont have to put it away." But tonight, that was the nice thing she did for her brother. Tyler wanted to give Lily a present. So he went and grabbed a present from under the tree to give her. And I had to explain that those werent his presents to give, but he could find a present to give her. So he went and found a box and put one of Lily baby dolls in it and then took it to her to open. It was awfully sweet to see his little two year heart and brain come up with that idea.
And with that, we are half way through the Jingle season!

Im back!
Im back!
I went to our mid-year meeting for school last week and then spent the first half of this week at the Pines Resort at Bass Lake! Ill have a post about that on Friday (or Monday, honestly) but I just wanted to drop in and say hello.
It was nice to take a few days off and while I planned on working on editing some videos over my short vacation, it was just that - SHORT! The last thing I wanted to do was stare at a computer screen when I had beautiful mountains, tall trees and an almost water-less lake to look at. It was also amazing spending four consecutive days with my baby. Lets be real for a second though, I had NO IDEA editing was so time consuming. I have a new respect for all of the YouTubers out there. Jeesh! My procrastination comes in out in full force when I know I have editing to do. Hopefully tonight Ill suck it up and get to it!
The time off was wonderful but now I have to face the daily grind. Im always a little resentful after vacation, when life goes back to normal. Adults do so many things. TOO many things.
I have a lot to catch up on and a lot to write about! Next week we will return to the normal schedule (Monday-Wednesday-Friday) but dont forget you can follow me on Twitter (which I need to be more active on, so tweet me! @meganlauriana) or on Instagram (@meganlauriana).
Instagram might be a little light over the next few days though... My camera is broken because a certain boy that inhabited my belly for seven-and-three-quarter months dumped makeup remover on my phone. Luckily the front camera and everything else still works. Hoping to get a replacement phone soon!
Hope you had an amazing MLK holiday!
xoxo,
Merg

And now back to Cleveland!
And now back to Cleveland!
The Open House went great! Laurel and I had fun doing some agility and Hardy got to participate in a puppy play demonstration. Plus, at lunch I was doing some training with him in the puppy room which attracted a crowd so we had some distractions. Hardy did great and got to meet all sorts of people and friendly dogs. He is definitely proving to be different from Laurel in all the ways wed hoped he would - he shows lovely natural self control and although he likes people and other dogs, he isnt as hugely enthusiastic about it as Laurel is.
Then the next day, Sunday, Laurel and I had to drive back to Cleveland. Every three weeks, I get an infusion of gamma globulin to treat an immune deficiency. Although we had it set up in Guelph to perform the treatment there, my insurance company wouldnt pay for it so I had to drive home. The nice thing is that we got to spend a bit of time with Brent. I did the infusion Monday morning and we drove back to Guelph yesterday. Hardy stayed in Canada with Sue and John to continue doing puppy things. We are hoping that having him spend some time away from me will help prevent separation anxiety which can be a big problem for owner-trained service dogs.
I know its good to be back with him again!
Laurel gave us a bit of a scare when we got back to Guelph yesterday. Shortly after we arrived back to the farm, she started vomiting. And, yes, shes a Lab so she has gotten into things before and vomited once or even a couple times. Yesterday afternoon and evening, she vomited lots and lots and it smelled really awful! I took Hardy to puppy class but I was worried about Laurel the entire time so when I got home, Sue and I took another late night trip to the emergency vet. The doctor who had saved Ecos life saw Laurel too. She suggested that we do some x-rays to make sure there wasnt an obstruction. Thankfully there wasnt so she gave Laurel a shot for nausea and sent us home with instructions to watch her overnight and feed her in the morning. The doctor thought she might have something akin to food poisoning in people. Thankfully, she was back to normal and ready to go.
Besides doing our Training Levels class today, Laurel and I attended a K9 Helpers Service Dog Club meeting! Thanks for inviting us! I loved doing the "hits" and "misses" for the week!
And tomorrow is Canada Day!

Back to Cleveland again!
Back to Cleveland again!
After a busy, fun-filled time at the Hillside Festival last weekend, Laurel and I headed back to Cleveland on Wednesday (July 28th). I had medical treatments on Thursday and Friday which went well. On Saturday we relaxed and Sunday we represented Lake Erie Assistance Dogs along with Canine Affair Center at Dog Days at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. We had a blast, a lot of people stopped by and the volunteers and staff at the Garden were incredible to work with. We will definitely plan to go back and do it again next summer.
Before I left Guelph, Sue and John gave me something to think about with regards to my future plans for Hardy. We are scheduled to all go home August 15th to spend some time with our son, Devin. Sue and John suggested that we leave Hardy behind for four weeks so that he could do some more puppy classes, loose leash walking and socialization with them in the continuing hope that having time away from me will help him avoid separation anxiety. Hell understand that I can come and go and that time away from me is no big deal. Part of me thinks that it is a very generous offer and the other part doesnt want to leave Hardy. I talked to Brent and Sue and thought hard about it. If theres a chance this is in Hardys best interest and since I trust Sue to know that, Ive decided to leave him until Labor Day (3 weeks).
