Symptoms and Treatment for Diabetes in Dogs

Canine diabetes is one of the major dog health problems, caused due to improper insulin production or insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone, secreted by the beta cells of pancreas, responsible for maintaining blood glucose level. Insulin causes the bodys cells to take up glucose from the blood to be used as a source of energy. When the body produces very little or no insulin (type 1 diabetes), the bodys cells fail to take up glucose from the blood. In another case, when the bodys cells are resistant to insulin (type 2 diabetes), they fail to use sugar from the blood and hence, sugar remains in the blood stream only. In both the cases, the result is increase in the blood sugar level or hyperglycemia, which is a characteristic of diabetes mellitus. Majority of the dogs suffer from type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Causes

This diabetes is more common in obese dogs; in addition, genetic and environmental factors are also an added factor. Many a time, viral infections, low immune system, pancreatic infections and other hormonal disorders form a basis for the causing this diabetes. There are certain dog breeds such as poodles, beagles, schnauzers, keeshonds, dachshunds, etc., which are more susceptible to this disease than the other breeds. Mostly dogs suffer from diabetes at the age of seven to nine years.

Symptoms

The symptoms are vague and dog owners have to be careful enough to analyze the noticeable signs. The major reason for all body disorders is due to failure of bodys cell to utilize blood glucose, which is one of the major energy fuels. The notable symptoms of diabetes in dogs are increased urination (polyuria), increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased hunger (polyphagia). Blood sample of a diabetic dog contains high sugar level in which the kidney cant filter efficiently, resulting in excreting glucose in the urine. This results in loss of a large volume of body fluid because of osmosis. Consequently, a diabetic dog feels thirstier to compensate the lost fluid. Since body is deprived of energy fuel, it also suffers from an increased hunger and eats more in order to carry out the normal body metabolism.

A diabetic dog may also suffer from ketoacidosis (a life-threatening complication due to insulin deficiency and an increase in stress hormones), dehydration, weight loss, increased fatigue, lethargy, fungal infections and other health complications.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is done by physical examination, followed by a series of urine and blood tests. Normal blood sugar level for a dog will be 70 - 150 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter). Canine diabetes is diagnosed, if a dogs blood sugar is greater than 200 mg/dl.

Diabetes in dogs is treated by controlling the blood glucose level, which is achieved by giving insulin injections. There are three ranges of insulin injections for dogs - short-acting, medium-range and long-range. Short-acting lasts from one to four hours; medium-range remains effective for four to 24 hours and long-range lasts for eight to 28 hours. Injecting insulin should be followed carefully in accordance with the veterinarians prescriptions, since an overdose can lead to lowering of the blood glucose level than normal (hypoglycemia). In addition, a dog owner has to be careful about the pets diet and the oral medication prescribed by the veterinarian. Diet should include foods with less sugar content. The amount of red meat and dry dog food should be kept to a minimum, instead one can add soft moist and homemade food. Diabetic dogs should be fed smaller meals at least twice or thrice a day.

Dog owners need to be careful about their dogs health and try to observe any change in the dogs behavior. It is always recommended to discuss with your veterinarian or a qualified specialist for any notable signs or symptoms. There should be proper dog care along with regular medical examination and blood test, at least twice annually to prevent canine diabetes.

Experimental device seems to help more chemotherapy reach tumors, researchers report

WEDNESDAY, June 15, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Brain cancer patients might benefit from an implantable ultrasound device that appears to enhance chemotherapy treatment, a small study says.

Researchers from the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris and other French institutions tested the experimental device on 15 patients with recurrent glioblastoma, a particularly deadly brain cancer. When the so-called SonoCloud was activated, sound waves opened the blood-brain barrier, letting in more chemotherapy, they said.

"The walls of the blood vessels in the brain are very difficult to cross for certain molecules," said Frederic Sottilini, CEO of Paris-based CarThera, the company developing SonoCloud.

While this blood-brain barrier protects the brain from toxins, "it means a challenge for treating brain diseases and disorders, as 99 percent of potential therapeutic drugs are blocked by it," he said.

"Scientists have been researching ways to bypass this barrier for over 50 years," Sottilini said.

A U.S. cancer specialist said this experimental technique could prove to be an important achievement.

"This is significant," said Dr. Ekokobe Fonkem, a neuro-oncologist at Baylor Scott and Whites Vasicek Cancer Treatment Center, in Temple, Texas. "One of the reasons glioblastoma, which is one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer, is very difficult to treat is because the blood-brain barrier prevents medications from getting across."

Its possible that this ultrasound approach could pave the way for more effective treatments, Fonkem said. "There are some medications that have potential but cant cross the blood-brain barrier," he noted.

But Fonkem said larger trials are needed before this device can be used in cancer treatment. "We have to see if there is any clinical benefit," he said. "They have to show it works without increasing side effects."

One concern, he added, is that by breaching the blood-brain barrier, you may open the door to brain infections.

"They have to make sure there is no room for bacteria to get into the brain and cause meningitis, which can be fatal," Fonkem said.

Sottilini explained how the ultrasound device works: Its implanted in the skull, over the area of the tumor. When activated, sound waves cause tiny beads -- called microbubbles -- to vibrate, temporarily opening the blood-brain barrier. This permits more of the chemo drug to reach the tumor, he said.

According to Sottilini, the device appeared safe to use in areas of the brain that control speech, movement and other senses.

"This could mean major therapeutic possibilities, not only for brain cancers, but also for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers," he said.

The device is activated before each round of chemotherapy, Sottilini said. Two minutes of low-intensity ultrasound is enough to open the blood-brain barrier for about six hours and increase the concentration of medication five to seven times, he said.

The researchers used the chemo drug carboplatin for the study. Carboplatin is commonly used to treat recurrent glioblastoma, they said, and has been shown to control tumors, but does not easily pass the blood-brain barrier.

The experimental treatments were conducted monthly for six months at most or until evidence of tumor progression was detected.

This phase 1 trial was not designed to test whether the higher doses of chemotherapy that passed into the brain were effective. However, tumor growth did not progress in nine patients, the researchers said.

Sottilini said he hopes for a larger trial next year.

The report was published June 15 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Other drugs that are administered subcutaneously (below the skin) include Moxidectin and Ivermectin. For Ivermectin to be effective, 2 doses of the drug are injected every 2 weeks. However, veterinarians usually do not recommend Ivermectin as there are few side effects associated with it, making it a risky choice.

Lime Sulfur Dip: Lime sulfur dip is a solution containing 97.8% lime sulfur. The solution is diluted by adding 4 oz of lime sulfur to a gallon of water. Once it is done, the diluted form is slowly poured over the dog, ensuring that the infected areas of the skin completely soak in the solution. Let the solution remain on the skin and do not wash or dry the animal. The dog owner must wear a pair of gloves while giving their pet a lime sulfur dip. Also ensure that the dog does not consume the solution.

Treatment Plan for Scabies in Dogs
Firstly, bathing the dog with a medicated shampoo as advised by the veterinarian is necessary. Then, removing the dust and dirt from the skin wounds (lesions) followed by clipping the hair, will help to prevent secondary infection. Dips of lime sulfur every week are recommended, until the skin problem goes away. Depending upon how severe the infection is, the doctor may also advice to administer Selamectin.

An easy way to prevent recurrence of scabies is that the environment should be kept clean. The place where your dog sleeps should be sprayed with an insecticide or a pesticide to keep mites at bay. The dog grooming tools must be cleaned daily. In case the dog is sleeping in the house and does not have a separate dog house, then all the carpeted areas need to be treated with insecticides. This is because, mites thrive and grow at a rapid rate in carpets. Daily vacuuming carpeted areas can also be helpful to prevent re-infestation of scabies in dogs.

The fruit should be roasted to a brown colour in cluster oil, and then powdered and stored. Half a teaspoon of this powder at bedtime will bring about normal bowel movements in the morning, and the astringent property of the fruit will heal masses. A decoction of the herb prepared by boiling six 10 seven dry fruits in half a litre of water should be used for washing bleeding piles. Hip dysplasia can be noticed in puppies who are as young as that of 8 to 10 months. Puppies will show resistance to jumping, running and other physical activities involving the hip. Dogs usually have a tendency to hop like a rabbit while running. There is also stiffness and soreness in the limb. The leg pain in dogs worsens and the hip weakens further after a period of time. After some months, the dogs completely avoid any physical activity like jumping, running or walking. They also avoid climbing stairs and even stretching of the legs may hurt badly for them. All this can lead to hip arthritis and in severe cases, the dogs will not be able to walk without assistance.

Treatment Options

Medications are generally prescribed to lessen the severity of the symptoms. Surgical Treatment

When a dog is about four to five months of age, Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis surgery procedure is opted. In this the two pelvic bones are fused together in order to allow proper movement of the joints. The advantage of this surgery is that it helps the other pelvic bones to develop normally and reduces the chances of osteoarthritis. Another option is Triple Pelvic Osteotomy. This surgery option can be taken in dogs which are less than 10 months of age. This procedure involves cutting and rotation of the pelvis in such a way that, the head of the femur fits tightly into the socket. The last option in severe cases might be total replacement of the hip.

Behavioral Treatment
Dog obesity is a problem because it can cause additional pressure on the joints. So the weight of dog must be kept under control. Giving the right kind of dog foods will help to maintain appropriate weight. Exercise like swimming and moderate forms of physical activities like walking and jogging can also benefit the dog. Massaging the hips and joints of the dog every weekends can not only help to relax muscles but also alleviate pain.

As hip dysplasia is hereditary, selective breeding of dogs can help up to some extent. Hip dysplasia can be very painful, so take proper dog care and avail the appropriate treatment that your canine friends needs.

Dog bite is a problem that you may face, either because of the dog in your neighborhood or even if you own a dog yourself. Though most dogs bite when they are playful and naughty, they may also bite fiercely when they are angry and this of course, will be a serious problem. Dog bites are relatively common in children as there are a number of dog breeds that are not really tolerant with children. Lock the dog up in a crate and take the victim as far away as possible from the dog. Start administering the treatment by following basic first aid guidelines. If the victim is bleeding badly, try stopping the bleeding by applying pressure. Once the bleeding stops, clean the area of the bite with an antibacterial or anti-septic solution. Make sure you clean the wound thoroughly of all the dirt. Apply some betadine to the wound site and then cover it up with some antibiotic ointment applied to a sterile gauze.

Treatment for Dog Bite - Laceration
In case of laceration wounds, the skin is torn by the penetration of the dogs teeth into the skin. This is a serious type of wound and needs immediate medical attention. Stitches will be required to cure this type of wound and it usually leaves back a noticeable scar. This type of wound will also require more time to heal as compared to the puncture wounds.

Dog Bite Care
In both the types of dog bites, antibiotics should be administered to prevent infections that can be caused by the bacteria deposited by the dogs teeth. Allowing the blood to flow for a few minutes after the bite will also help eliminate the bacteria. Make sure the wound is kept covered for its healing to take place normally. The wound may be accompanied by some amount of swelling and pain for which pain killers can be taken. Keep the bite affected area in an elevated position to reduce the swelling. Gather information about the dogs immunization status. If the dog has it vaccinations in place, the victim may just require a tetanus shot, else rabies vaccination needs to be administered. This is essential for the prevention of rabies and sepsis.

Home Remedies
Along with the medical treatment for dog bites, making use of some home remedies can also be helpful in curing the bite quickly.

Apply a mixture of turmeric and honey to the wound. The antiseptic properties of turmeric and the soothing properties of honey will help heal the bite faster.
Consume vitamin C supplements on a daily basis until the wound has healed completely.
Make a herbal mixture for topical application, by grinding together three walnuts, some salt and an onion. Apply this paste to the wound and bandage it up. This mixture works as an anti-poison remedy.
Consume three to four garlic, thrice a day to treat dog bites.
Sprinkle some asafetida powder on the wound to reduce the swelling and to heal the wound quickly.

Dog bites can be prevented by imparting effective dog training too. Make sure you administer the treatment as soon as possible for the well-being of the victim and for the prevention of infections.
