Hobbies and Me

Hobbies and Me

Ive had many hobbies over my short life.

Ive been a writer, an avid reader, an amateur scrapbooker, a wannabe photographer, a blogger, a jewelry maker, a DIYer, a crafter, a makeup-er, YouTube dabbler and now, Ive gotten into decorating my planner. These are only the ones I remember.

There has been a lot of self reflection in the past week and Ive realized some of my ways. This new hobby of mine has made me recognize a pattern that Im not sure I like. I suppose it depends on how you look at it.

A positive way to view my hobbies is that Im interested in trying new things. Thats awesome.

A negative way to look at my hobbies is that I start a whole lot of them and quickly lose steam in pursuing them.

Starting this new hobby has been really good for me. Its been a few weeks now and I still enjoy the process of building my week, adding pretty accents, keeping track of important things. Ive never been good at being an adult and I feel like this task helps to keep me focused on things I would normally be scatterbrained about. Although, now that Ive come head to head with my penchant of starting hobbies, spending money to support them only to fizzle out, well, who knows how long itll last.

As I was thinking of all of this, I started thinking of Bryan and his role in my hobbies. Hes always been supportive of my writing. He built an entire library for my books and I cant even tell you how much money or time we spent going yard sale to thrift store to book store to pick up more books for me to consume. He was less supportive of the whole scrapbooking thing. When I was into being a photographer, Bryan and his dad bought me a camera, a photo printer, a ton of photo paper, various photographer supplies like a tripod and editing software. He has never tried to sensor my writing on this blog. Hell edit posts even when they may hurt him and he reads every post, even if he catches up a few at a time. I spent gobs of money on jewelry making and he rarely said a word. He bought me a light box and light kit so I could take proper photos of the items. He was not supportive of the DIYer thing, maybe because Im not good at it in the least. But, when I had projects for him to do, he reluctantly did them... when he wanted to. He watched me etch glass and try to make wreaths and ornaments and all sorts of various projects that usually turned out horrible.

He waited a really long time to call me out on my makeup spending. I definitely went overboard, trying to build up a makeup collection, and he was supportive. He was supportive (and still is) about Lauriana Cosmetics and I havent lost my fire for that at all. Im still in love with makeup and making other women feel beautiful. But when I jumped in to the business, I jumped all in. I spent a lot of money that I shouldnt have spent. He could have called me out at any time, but he didnt. He let me dive in head first.

When he finally mentioned casually that perhaps I should curb my spending, I knew I had gone too far. With my new hobby, hes not as supportive. This one he doesnt "get". Which I understand and Im not offended by. I put pretty stickers in a planner and track our bills and gigs and milestones. But Ive been on top of everything and I think over time hell see that its helping me stay on track. I like that Im putting in a little effort to make it pretty because I hope to be able to look back at my planners and see a slice of our life that week. As I began to get interested in creating content for YouTube, he helped me set up the light kit I bought and encouraged me to film.

I think my desire to start and stop new things says a lot about me... but I think it says a lot about Bryan too. Ive sunken a lot into hobbies, emotionally and financially, I suppose to try to find my thing. A few of them have stuck but as you can see, not many of them.

Having this self revelation and tying it back to Bryans reaction, or lack of reaction, made me feel extremely guilty. But it also made me fall a little more in love with the man I give such a hard time about everything, because he has had every reason to discourage my efforts, but instead he provided the freedom to find my "thing". Whatever it is that allows me to express myself. I felt a new level of appreciation for my guy.

There really isnt a happy ending to this post, but I think it was an important milestone for me. I think coming to terms with the fact that Im obviously searching for something I have yet to find is telling. I also have been more aware about my actions and Ive curbed my spending in many areas. Ive come face to face with not only some strengths, but some real weaknesses of mine. And I gained a new level of love and appreciation for my partner. There has been a lot of growth for me in the past year and a half. New perspectives and some soul searching. A lot of it has been great... a lot of it has been a bit...uncomfortable to confront. But in the end its all been good.

...Oh, I just remembered that I bought a sewing machine too. Ive never used it. Im sure I will some day.

[Sneaky message from spelling/grammar editor: I love you crazy hobby girl. Never stop exploring.]

FATS good ones and dangerous ones

FATS good ones and dangerous ones

How Different Types of Fat Change Your Body
May 18, 2016 | 21,210 views

By Dr. Mercola
An enlightening report recently emerged revealing that the linolenic acid (LA) concentration of fat tissue in American adults has skyrocketed by about 136 percent over the last decade. Its not so much that people are eating more fats but that the "bad fat" is taking over.
You might be wondering why America seems to be fatter and sicker than ever before, when so much focus is on losing weight and eating a "healthier" diet. Part of the problem is that one persons idea of "healthy" is vastly different from anothers and, often, vastly different from reality.
Is it true that eating "fat free" or "low fat" foods helps you lose weight? How come its not working? And why do the U.S. Dietary Guidelines,1 the American Heart Association and many doctors maintain that vegetable and seed oils are better for your heart when theres so much evidence to the contrary?
Getting to the Bottom of Real and Fake Fat
Adipose tissue, the technical term for fat, is actually a crucial part of your body, as it contains the blood vessels and nerve cells necessary for storing energy and releasing hormones. Fat also insulates your body.
Linolenic acid, concentrated in seed or vegetable oils like corn and canola oil, is the polyunsaturated fat thats most prevalent in foods today, but its modus operandi — the way it accumulates in fat tissue — is what concerns researchers today.
Neurobiologist and obesity research Stephan Guyenet, who studied the disturbing trend, pooled resources with co-researcher Susan Carlson, a University of Kansas nutrition researcher, to produce a paper revealing that over the last 50 years, the linolenic acid concentration of fat tissue in American adults has shot upward by a shocking 136 percent.
Their research captured criteria from 37 studies between 1960 and 2010, which underscored the steady and consistent trajectory over those five decades and continues today. They also found a "strong correlation" between the linolenic acid we eat and the linolenic acid in our fat tissue.
Besides soybean oil and canola oil (from rapeseeds), the oils that contain linolenic acid include:
  • Corn oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Cottonseed oil
  • Peanut oil
Note that seeds like sunflower seeds are good for you because they are in whole form and havent been subject to the chemical processing used to extract their oils.
Whats so Bad About Vegetable Oils?
The irony is that vegetable oils are often referred to as "heart healthy," but science doesnt support it. The whole idea was based on shelf life and economics. Vegetable oils remain fluid at room temperature, which adds to its convenience and shelf life, which is good for manufacturers and retailers.
The hydrogenation process, another problem that has emerged with the processing of seed oils to create the more solid oil forms for margarine and shortening, is another topic, but related to the health problems stemming from the ways vegetable oils are produced.
With the adoption of polyunsaturated oils, the natural fats such as butter that our forebears were raised on were cast aside. As America turned to vegetable oils, which are a concentrated source of linolenic acid, LA in body fat climbed at a remarkably similar rate. Handpicked Nation reported:
"Before 1920 coronary heart disease was rare in America. But during the next forty years, the incidence rose dramatically and by the mid-1950s heart disease was the leading cause of death among Americans. What happened?
During 1910–1970 the proportion of traditional animal fat in the American diet declined from 83% to 62% and butter consumption plummeted from 18 pounds per person per year to four."2
During the same period, the so-called "healthier" use of margarines, shortenings and refined oils rose in popularity by about 400 percent! (Simultaneously, both sugar and processed food consumption increased by about 60 percent.)
Its interesting that in comparison the LA content of fat tissue among Europeans is not only lower than that of most Americans, but also today theirs is about where ours was in 1970.3
You Are What You Eat. No, Really.
An article in Online Today, "Healthy Animal Fats"4 expounds on what you get when you choose refined vegetable oils, which require intense processing, both mechanically and chemically.
The procedure as well as the materials used should be a harbinger of whats to come to your health when you ingest virtually anything thats undergone this process:
"The seed pulp and oil are put through a hexane solvent bath, which is produced by the refining of crude petroleum oil.
Impurities are removed by treating the oil with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or soda ash (sodium carbonate). Finally, bleaching and deodorizing are done to remove impurities and volatile compounds.
All this chemical concoction renders a product that has been linked to widespread inflammation within the body, elevated blood triglycerides, and an impaired insulin response."
Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fats: Whats the Difference?
Over decades, changes have taken place correlating to the amounts of omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) and the omega-6 fats we eat. Research indicates our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed a balanced mix of omega-3 and omega-6 fats and were largely free of modern diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.5
Then the industrial revolution in the mid-1800s generated a shift toward omega-6 fats and the manufacture of vegetable oils that rose with every decade. Today, studies show that the ratio is as high as 25:1 in favor of omega-6 fats.6
To define polyunsaturated omega-6 and omega-3 fats, "poly" means many, which references multiple bonds. Because our bodies cant produce them, we need to obtain them via our diets. Thats why theyre called "essential," and they have critical roles in our bodies, from clotting blood to fighting inflammation.
This Is Your Body on the Wrong Fats: What Fake Oils Do
Research shows that before 1920, heart disease was a rarity. In 2012, The Atlantic cited a chart published by The New England Journal of Medicine, which lays out the top 10 causes of death from 1900 to 2010.
Two things are remarkable: Mortality dropped dramatically overall, but heart disease and cancer soared to the No. 1 and 2 spots.7 The Atlantic credited part of the increase in these diseases to sedentary lifestyles.
But increased omega-6 fat consumption and the neglect of omega-3s has taken a toll, especially in terms of inflammation and heart disease. While "Big Pharma"  and doctors are well aware that patients could simply be encouraged to reduce their omega-6 intake, they instead recommend and prescribe drugs and over-the-counter remedies.
The breakdown is fairly straightforward: Cancer and heart disease combined sent 18 percent of the population to their graves. In 2010, that number jumped to 63 percent.  Another way to put it is that out of every 100,000 people, then and now, the ratio of deaths tips from 201 to 380.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition8 focused on this imbalance of fatty acids in a study that offered a harrowing list of increased inflammatory diseases as a direct result, including:
Obesity
Type 2 diabetes
Irritable bowel syndrome
Inflammatory bowel disease
Rheumatoid arthritis
Cancer
Cardiovascular disease
Metabolic syndrome
Asthma
Macular degeneration
Psychiatric disorders
Autoimmune diseases
Poison Plus Nutrition Does Not Equal a Balanced Diet
Omega-3 and omega-6 fats have different functions, particularly when it comes to inflammation. As one study termed it, omega-6s can cause inflammation, while omega-3s fight it.9 However:
"Inflammation is essential for our survival. It helps protect our bodies from infection and injury, but it can also cause severe damage and contribute to disease when the inflammatory response is inappropriate or excessive."10
So how can you keep from eating something thats bad for you, especially when the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is often so quick to defend foods that have been proven to be clearly misrepresented? One way is to be aware of the ingredients in the processed foods you eat—and to avoid processed foods altogether if you can.
Guyenets research on how the wrong fats change our bodies is compounded by the fact that vegetable oil (which weighs in on the omega-6 side) is found in so many foods, and not just margarine andshortening. Its in crackers, packaged snacks, coffee creamers, fried foods, pre-made baked goods and ready-to-use dough and pie shells.
Besides vegetable oil, there are many other pitfalls that can throw off the balance your body needs in the world of nutrition. Sugar and soda are two of the biggest problems, but there are other things that can sideline a good nutrition plan. Thats why arming yourself with the information you and your family need to prevent disease and maintain health and wellness is so important. Here are some things you can do now to take control of your health and enjoy life:

  • Increase your intake of omega-3 fats from sources such as sardines, anchovies, wild-caught Alaskan salmon and high-quality krill oil.
  • Use first-pressed virgin olive oil and butter and, for cooking, coconut oil is great because it doesnt burn quickly, and contains multiple health advantages.
  • Read labels carefully. Bone up on terms like "hydrogenation," "trans fats," "high fructose corn syrup" and Red 40 food dye.
  • Avoid processed foods, including processed vegetable oils.
  • Eat real food, not processed and not fake. "Real" foods include organically grown vegetables, fruits in moderation, sprouts, pastured meat and eggs, herbs, and wild-caught Alaskan salmon, for a start.
  • Look for and use organic fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs and other foods as often as possible.

Dirt and Worms

Dirt and Worms

Tyler helped Joel on garden dismantling day.  I come home from work and I see those two out back in the garden and I immediately think to myself, "Why?  Why must they be playing in the dirt?  Its not bath night!"  I really need to learn to relax.  I have a son and hes going to get dirty - even when its not convenient for him to get dirty.

Tyler was on a worm collecting mission.  He wasnt the least bit afraid or grossed out by the worms. He wanted to show his sissy, so he brought them in the house where she was watching TV.  She squealed.  Pretty much the same reaction I had in my head when I saw him out in the dirt in the first place.  Ha!

Oops! Another Target Ulta and CVS Haul!

Oops! Another Target Ulta and CVS Haul!

Its not my fault.

Except, it totally is. Eeek! When I like something I have this major problem of going balls to the wall. Its not something I would recommend. I watch for sales, hit up stores when there are coupons and sometimes stumble on great deals. I really wish I had this mentality with the gym because Id be so skinny by now.

My husband winces whenever I walk through the door with an Ulta bag. I figure he now knows my pain whenever he comes home with Guitar Center bags. There is WAY more damage done there than here! He always argues that he spends money to make money.

I tell him I spend money so I can blog about it with you! I dont make any money from this blog, but every one has got to have a hobby right?

Denise and I went to Ulta when she was here the weekend before last and I picked up this Ulta Favorites sampler. The box was originally $30 but I got it on sale for $19. I mainly swooped this up because I have wanted to try three of the six products, loved one of the six already and would definitely use it, and was mildly interested in the two remaining products.

Here is the set breakdown:

Butter London 3 Free Nail Polish in Rosie Lee - ($15.00 value)
Laura Gellar City Lights Lip Gloss - ($16.00 value)
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mini - ($10.00 value)
Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Shadow Primer Deluxe Sample - ($5.00~)
Pür Minerals Mineral Glow Bronzer - ($24.00)
Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust in Pink Champagne - ($25.00)

The total value of the set was $95.00 and I purchased it for $19.00! That is 80% of the value of the box. These kits are really awesome if you want to try new brands but dont know what to pick and/or dont have the money for individual items!

I had never tried butter London nail polish, anything from the Laura Gellar line and I only have a foundation and foundation buffing brush from Tarte so the mascara was definitely nice to try out. The lipgloss is really pretty and smells REALLY sweet, which actually can get a tad obnoxious. You already know I love me some Lorac Behind the Scenes eye shadow primer! Id never tried anything from Pür Minerals and I havent used the bronzer yet. Bronzer kind of scares me because I have a small face, so its a fine like between looking like Im glowing and looking like I have dirt on my face. The Napoleon Perdis eye dust is a really pretty rose gold color and Ive already worn it quite a few times! Its can be sheered out so I even used a little to highlight my cheekbones!

NYX Autumn Sky ES 04A

I picked up these NYX singles at Ulta because they were on clearance and Ive never tried their eyeshadows before. Each of these were $2.49. I had to figure out how to photograph them so the colors showed up. I have a new found respect for photographers, people!

NYX White ES 02

NYX Flamingo ES 19

NYX Taupe ES 04

I also picked up these lipsticks - perfect for spring!

NYX 601 Castle ($3.99)

NYX Doll ($3.99)

NYX Rose Bud (on Clearance for $1.99)

I have hooded eyelids so I needed some smaller brushes for my lid, plus I wanted to get a soft blending brush. I have the ELF blending brush but it is stiffer and it hurts after a while of blending. I went with this little set from Eco Tools and I love it! Its perfect. This set is $11.49 and I really want the Fresh & Flawless set which is $14.99. Maybe next month!

I had two coupons from CVS, one $10 off any beauty purchase of more than $10 and one $4 off a purchase of $12. I used both to pick up these two items plus a lip liner from NYX (not pictured.)

($12.94 - $10 coupon = $2.94)

($9 + 4 NYX liner = $13 - 4 coupon = $9.)

I had been meaning to get these three products so I was stoked to be able to try all three for $12. Score! You might be wondering why I got such a dark color of concealer from LOreal - its for contouring. I saw the tip on a video with Eleventh Gorgeous and Check in the Mirror. What a great idea! Its so easy to do a little contouring on your cheeks and nose with this baby. If you decide to try it out this concealer doesnt lie - it is SUPER blendable, which means you need a lot less than you think. Also, blend up on your cheeks instead of down.

I had heard that the Sonia Kashuk brush sets were on clearance (Target has SO MUCH clearance make up right now) but they were sold out. I ended up going again and they had a ton of these sets! I was so excited. I love the golden clutch and the green handles. Thus far, Ive only ever had ELF brushes which are good, but they are bottom of the barrel good. Its nice to have brushes that are a bit...softer. Ya know?

While at Target, I picked up this eyebrow gel and its been working well for me, although the brush is HUGE and when you put it back into the tube, product pushes out of the seam between the cap and the tube. Annoying! I picked up the Physicians Formula green concealer at CVS when it was 50% off, I also got a lipgloss (not pictured) that changes its color to suit your PH levels. Isnt that crazy? This was in a different mini haul, but I wanted to include it just to say that I seriously love it. A little goes a LONG way and it really cancels out red!

I know Ive been a little make-up heavy lately, but thats just a coincidence. Everything is on clearance right now so I like to take advantage of the sales. Im going to [try really hard to] cool it on the shopping for a while so youll see less hauls.

If you want any more information about any of these products be sure to let me know and Ill tell you how Im liking them!

Our first Levels class is a success and we visit Dr Neal!

Our first Levels class is a success and we visit Dr Neal!

Yesterday I taught my first Levels class at Canine Affair Center! Two people who had signed up didnt show so we might be able to bring a couple people in from the wait list. I used Hardy as a demo dog for clicker training and he was super! Then when I put him in a crate to wait, he yelled at me so after giving him a warning, he got "too badded" out to the crate in my van. After class, I worked with him a bit and he generally remembered everything. We are still working on loose leash walking with my chair really hard since what he learned with John walking doesnt just transfer to the chair (something I learned from training Laurel - the puppy has to learn both skills).
This afternoon, Laurel had an appointment with Dr. Neal. He checked her ruptured ligament and thought that it was healing nicely however, he wants her to rest for another two weeks. He doesnt think it is going to be a chronic injury and it shouldnt interfere with her ability to do her job or play dog sport games (like agility). Of course, the movement we want to avoid - having her pivot on that foot - is exactly what she does when she is playing with Hardy! However, she is being very good at self regulation and will put herself in her crate or lay on my bed instead of tearing around the house or yard with him. Dr. Neal looked at Hardys eyes which are still goopy at times (and Laurels are starting to be goopy some too) and gave us some antibiotic ointment to use with both. He also looked at an upper tooth behind one of Hardys adult teeth - it is a baby tooth that is resisting coming out. He suggested we just leave it until it comes out on its own. Hardy weighs 36.7 lbs now and seems to be growing nicely.

Abstract

In 2015, countries in western Europe were declared free of rabies in nonflying mammals. Surveillance data for 2001–2013 indicate that risk for residual rabies is not 0 because of pet importation from countries with enzootic rabies. However, the risk is so low (7.52 × 10?10) that it probably can be considered negligible.
Although western and northern Europe and most countries in central Europe have eliminated rabies in nonflying animals (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#) (1,2), alerts are regularly issued because of importation of rabid pets. Policy makers recommend postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) after exposure in Western Europe to bats or pet bites in areas with rabies alerts. However, the policy after exposure to these pets is unclear (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#).
Residual risk for rabies in pets in Western Europe is defined as no risk (no PEP necessary) or low risk (PEP recommended after exposure), depending on recommendations (e.g., no risk according to Public Health England and low risk according to the World Health Organization) (3). Thus, evaluation of residual rabies risk in western Europe caused by pet movement is needed. We evaluated residual rabies risk caused by pet movement in western Europe.

The Study

We calculated the risk that a given pet in western Europe is contagious for rabies on a given day by the equation
We describe factors associated with rabid pets (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#) and define pet transport as any noncommercial movement of a live cat, dog, or ferret and its owner or an authorized person across an administrative border.
During 2001–2013, a total of 21 animal rabies cases attributed to pets from rabies-enzootic countries were reported in western Europe (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#), which represented 1.6 pets/year and 23 days/year of potential contagiousness. Fifteen dogs and 1 kitten originated from rabies-endemic countries outside western Europe. Five dogs raised in western Europe acquired rabies outside this region. One dog subsequently infected 2 indigenous dogs in France (4). All pet owners were identified. All owners except 1 (a Spanish man living in a van) were official residents of western Europe. Circumstances that led to pet examination and rabies diagnosis were clinical suspicion (14 pets), bitten humans (3 pets), border quarantine (2 pets), and retrospective data (2 pets with indigenous secondary cases during the alert in France in 2008).
Average contagious period was 16 days/pet: 14 days in western Europe (8 days without signs of rabies and 6 days with signs of rabies) and 2 days before arriving in western Europe. For 1 dog, signs of rabies appeared before the animal entered western Europe. For each rabid animal, an average of 34 (range 0–187) persons and other animals received PEPs. The maximum value of this range corresponds to an alert in France in 2004. After this alert, 1,200 animals were tested and 759 were observed for 1 year. Human and pet vaccinations led to vaccine shortages that required importing of vaccines not authorized for use in France (5).
We identified animal origin and mode of entry into western Europe (Table 1). Most rabies cases originated in Morocco and were recorded in France. Three cases were imported from eastern Europe to Germany, 1 from The Gambia to France, and 1 from Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom. Customs officials could not identify any of 11 cases in animals transported mainly by road (e.g., after a ferry trip from Morocco to Spain, Portugal, or France). Seven pets were transported through other countries in western Europe before arriving in the country of diagnosis (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#). Six puppies and 1 kitten were transported by air, of which only 2 were identified by customs officials (in the United Kingdom and Germany).

Of 19 transported rabid pets, 8 (42%) had no rabies vaccination, pet passport, or health certificate. Only 6 were vaccinated (0/2 infected in France, 3/3 imported but raised in western Europe, 3/7 imported by air, and 0/8 imported by road). Most vaccinated pets did not comply with recommended age for vaccination (>12 weeks of age) or time between vaccination, serologic analysis, and transport. No reports mentioned valid rabies serologic analysis included in European Pet Movement Policy (Figure) for unlisted third countries (e.g., Morocco, the Gambia, Sri Lanka, or Azerbaijan) (6). Using data for 2001–2013, we calculated that, for contact on a given day with a pet in western Europe, the probability of the pet being contagious for rabies attributed to pet transport was 7.52 × 10?10 (Table 2).
We observed a significant correlation between number of contagious days for dogs in a country and number of tourists traveling from this country to Morocco (? = 0.73, p = 0.017). We found no correlation with other variables tested (total dog population, dog population density, number of dogs per inhabitant).

Conclusions

Risk for indigenous rabies has decreased in western Europe. During 2001–2013, because of appropriate control of imported rabid pets, only 4 indigenous cases of human rabies were reported (3 in recipients of organs from a donor infected in India and 1 from a rabid bat in Scotland) (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#). Since 2011, no indigenous rabies cases have been reported in terrestrial mammals in western Europe. Because of increased travel (7), rabies imported by trips to rabies-enzootic countries has increased, and travel became the main source of rabies in humans (1.46 patients/year) (8) and pets (1.6 rabid pets/year) in 2001–2013. However, because of improved surveillance, although the number of imported rabies cases increased, the number of secondary cases decreased (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#).
Illegal importation of rabid animals is not limited to western Europe (9) or dogs and cats (10). This finding highlights the need for a global approach for regulation of animal movement worldwide and strengthening real-time reporting for animal and human rabies.
Risk for dog rabies being reintroduced into the European Union from Morocco was estimated as 0.21 cases/year (11). However, we estimate that 1.1 pets/year are entering western Europe after being infected in Morocco. Morocco has become the main source of pet rabies in western Europe, often through Ceuta and Melilla (Spanish enclaves in northern Morocco). Because no prophylaxis or specific vaccinations are needed for travel to northern Africa, few travelers seek pretravel advice and most have little knowledge of pet rabies (12,13).
Lack of awareness also increases importation of human rabies. Despite an efficient policy for preventing entry of rabid pets, the United Kingdom reported the highest number of patients with imported rabies during the study period (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#). Patients returning to this country did not believe that a correct PEP was needed after exposure abroad. None of the transported rabid pets fully satisfied European Pet Movement Policy, which raised questions about how to improve the current regulation application. Increasing international travel, expansion of the Schengen area (26 countries in Europe that have a common visa policy) into rabies-enzootic countries in eastern Europe, and development of internet animal trade (source of illegal importation) (14) are new challenges for ensuring compliance.
Because bat rabies is more difficult to control than dog rabies, and some developing countries still have difficulties controlling rabies, eradication of rabies is not a realistic objective. Awareness should be increased, and current regulations for pet transport should be applied to reduce rabies importation and ensure that risk in western Europe remains low.
To avoid unnecessary and costly PEP and optimize resource allocation, it should be clearly stated which WHO recommendations, Public Health England recommendations, or other practices most relevant after pet exposure should be applied. Low risks (<10-–6) are usually considered acceptable or essentially 0 (3,15). The risk of a fatal car crash while traveling to PEP consultations was higher than the risk of rabies after exposure to a pet in France in 2001–2011 (3). The most pertinent policy in areas at low risk for rabies is probably that of the United Kingdom (i.e., no PEP outside alert areas that do not have asymptomatic animals or exposure to bats) (https://zenodo.org/record/49670#).

9 Candida Symptoms & 3 Steps to Treat Them
http://draxe.com/candida-symptoms/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter
Do you ever experience any of these health issues?
  • Exhaustion
  • Cravings for sweets
  • Bad breath
  • White coat on tongue
  • Brain fog
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Chronic sinus and allergy issues
  • Digestive problems (gas and bloating)
  • Weak immune system
  • UTI
If so, these are just some of the signs that you may have candida and in this article you will learn other candida symptoms along with what causes candida and the diet to naturally treat candida.

What Is Candida?
Candida Albicans is the most common type of yeast infection found in the mouth, intestinal tract and vagina, and it may affect skin and other mucous membranes. If the immune system is functioning optimally, this type of yeast infection is rarely serious. However, if the immune system is not functioning properly, the candida infection can migrate to other areas of the body, including the blood and membranes around the heart or brain. (1)

Candida is a fungus that aids with nutrient absorption and digestion, when in proper levels in the body. When it overproduces, the typical candida symptoms may appear. In the digestive tract, left unchecked, it breaks down the walls of the intestinal lining and penetrates into the bloodstream. This releases by-product toxins and other toxins from your system, causing leaky gut syndrome.
When you body’s natural pH balance is upset, the candida can grow out of control, creating a systemic problem. Good healthy bacteria and a properly functioning immune system are essential when fighting this stubborn infection.
Candida Overgrowth Syndrome, or COS, is the term used when candida has grown out of control in your body. Make no mistake: This is a chronic health condition. Individuals that have never experienced a serious yeast infection can find they have developed new sensitivities, allergies or intolerances to a variety of foods. These foods include dairy, eggs, corn and gluten.

What Causes Candida Infections?
There are many possible causes of candida including a diet high in sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol that help yeast to grow. To add to that, I’ve described six other potential causes below.
1. Broad-Spectrum Antibiotics
Sometimes, antibiotics are needed to fight a stubborn infection to kill the offending bacteria in your system. The problem with antibiotics and with overusing them (often creating antibiotic resistance) is that they don’t just kill the bad bacteria; they kill the good ones, too.
The good bacteria in your system are responsible for digestion and keeping candida under control. After a long course (or multiple courses over a short period), antibiotics can make your body a literal breeding ground for candida.
2. Birth Control Pills

Unlike antibiotics, birth control pills in and of themselves do not directly cause a yeast infection or candida overgrowth syndrome. However, when a woman consumes a diet high in refined sugars and has had a course of antibiotics, birth control pills can adversely affect her body, leading to a candida infection.
Some women find that birth control pills seam to instigate yeast infections — and even long after the initial infection is gone, once they start taking the birth control pills again, candida can take root.
3. Oral Corticosteroids
Individuals that treat their asthma with corticosteroid inhalants are at an increased risk of developing candida in the mouth, leading to systemic candida overgrowth. (2) It is imperative that individuals using corticosteroid inhalers for asthma follow the directions for swishing the mouth out after each use. If oral candidiasis is detected, can be treated with the gargling of coconut oil and a drop or two of essential clove oil.
4. Cancer Treatments
According to the Department of Clinical Research at Merck Research Laboratories, candidiasis can become invasive in cancer patients and prevent a serious complication. (3) In this study, one-third of patients being treated for cancer had “invasive” candidiasis. Chemotherapy and radiation can both work to kill cancerous cells and tumors; however, they also kill off the healthy bacteria that naturally fight candida.
5. Diabetes

In a Type 1 or a Type 2 diabetic, sugar levels in the mouth and other mucous membranes are traditionally higher than in an individual without diabetes. Since candida is a type of yeast and sugar feeds yeast, it is understandable that those with diabetes are at a greater risk for developing candida overgrowth syndrome.
6. Weakened Immune System
Any individual with a weakened immune system is more likely to develop candida. This population includes infants, small children, the elderly, those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (4), and other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.

9 Candida Symptoms
Candida overgrowth can be difficult for a physician to diagnosis. This type of system yeast infection presents different ways, in different people. Below are nine of the candida symptoms to watch for if you are concerned you have candida, or candida overgrowth syndrome.
1. Chronic Fatigue
If you have fatigue or exhaustion that you simply cannot shake, regardless of the number of hours you sleep, you may have chronic fatigue syndrome. The disease is characterized by fatigue that lasts a minimum of six months and is often accompanied by other symptoms, including headaches, joint pain, difficulties with memory and concentration, and sore throat. (5)
Often one of the candida symptoms is chronic fatigue. While a candida infection is not the only cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, many physicians believe it heightens the risk of CFS.
2. Mood Disorders
One of the reasons it can be difficult to diagnosis candida is that so many of the candida symptoms are common to other conditions, including mood disorders. Individuals with candida overgrowth may experience dramatic mood swings, anxiety, irritability, depression and even panic attacks.
3. Recurring Vaginal and Urinary Tract Infections
When an individual experiences recurring infections in the urinary tract or vagina, candida may be at the root of the problem. It is important to realize that candida can be sexually transmitted, and partners can spread it back and forth. For women, reduce the risk by avoiding tight-fitting underwear or pantyhose and avoid hot baths during an active infection. (6)
4. Oral Thrush
Oral thrush is actually a yeast infection, caused by the same strain of candida that affects other mucous membranes, including the vagina. Most often caused by the use of prednisone or other oral corticosteroids as mentioned above. Left untreated, it may spread through the body including the digestive tract, lungs, liver and heart valves.
Oral candida is communicable; newborns can get thrush during birth, children can get it from sharing toys with other children, and adults can pass it back and forth through the saliva. (7)
5. Sinus Infections
As with many of these other candida symptoms, sinus infections are common today, and it can be difficult to pinpoint the root of the cause. Candida does affect the sinuses and can result in a persistent cough, post-nasal drip, an increase in congestion, seasonal allergies, and general flu-like symptoms. If you experience consistent problems with your sinuses, it’s time to check for a candida infection!
6. Intestinal Distress
Ongoing intestinal distress is a sign you have a candida infection. Persistent flatulence, burping, bloating, constipation or diarrhea, and stomach cramps may be caused by a lack of healthy bacteria in your digestive tract.
When yeast overtakes the intestines, healthy bacteria are undermanned, and cannot fight off the infection alone. Many individuals experience dramatic relief of chronic intestinal distress when effectively treating a candida infection.
7. Brain Fog
Along with mood changes and chronic fatigue, brain fog is often overlooked as a sign of candida. However, candida overgrowth can cause a lack of focus, poor physical coordination, difficulty in concentrating on tasks and poor memory.
8. Skin and Nail Fungal Infections
Athlete’s foot and fungus in the toenail are common yeast infections, which stem from the same breed of candida. Continued infections may be a sign that you have a systemic candida infection.
 9. Hormonal Imbalance
A hormonal imbalance is one of the signs of candida that presents in many other health conditions. However, it is important to recognize how an infection can cause early menopause, PMS, a low sex drive, migraines, endometriosis, water retention, mood swings and an inability to lose unwanted pounds.
Whilst in the midst of candida overgrowth, your body becomes inflamed, causing the yeast to grow and spread beyond the digestive tract. One of the byproducts of candida actually can mimic estrogen, leading to a serious hormonal imbalance. (8)

Treatment 1: The Candida Cleanse
The candida cleanse helps to rid the body of excess candida through the flushing of the digestive tract, and the introduction of healthy candida fighters found in fermented vegetables and kefir.
You really have two options for a cleanse: a liquids-only cleanse or a more gentle cleanse with food. You may also opt the most thorough gut reboot, starting with the step one cleanse and then move to the step two cleanse. The whole process will set the stage for starting the candida diet as well!
Step One: Liquids-Only Candida Cleanse (Duration 1–2 Days)
Start by making a vegetable broth from organic onions, garlic, celery, kale, sea salt and pure water. Let simmer and strain. Discard the vegetables and refrigerate the broth.
Throughout the day, sip on warm broth; it’s imperative that you drink lots of water to help your body expel all the toxins in your system. While this is not a long-term cleanse, it can be repeated as needed every few weeks. It can also be used as a jumpstart to the food cleanse below.
Step Two: Steamed Vegetables (Duration 3–5 Days)
By eliminating grains, sugars, fruits, starches and alcohol from your diet for three to five days, you can make great headway in your fight against candida overgrowth.
Mostly, eat fresh, organic vegetables that have been steamed. For this cleanse stage, keep away from any starchy vegetables like carrots, radishes, beets, sweet potatoes and white potatoes, which may contribute to sugar levels and feed the candida. Continue to drink plenty of pure water, a minimum of 72 ounces per day, to help flush the candida and by-products from your system.
During this time, no more than once a day, you can eat salads made from leafy greens (like romaine) or bitter greens (like chard) and topped with just a bit of coconut oil and apple cider vinegar (or lemon juice).
During either of the candida cleanses above, you can use bentonite clay to help surround the toxins and efficiently remove them from your system.

Treatment 2: The Candida Diet
This is a diet to not just discourage candida; it’s the diet to help you rid your body of candida! This is also a great next step if you have already started with the candida cleanse.
1. The first step of the diet is to boost your immune system through the elimination of sugar, alcohol and refined carbohydrates. These items are contributing to the growth of the candida in your system.
2. Step two is to replace these foods with organic vegetables, including carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale and asparagus.
According to ancient Chinese medicine, warm starchy vegetables support the spleen in clearing candida from the body. While I don’t recommend these vegetables during the “cleanse” stage, the regular candida diet includes warming fall vegetables that nourish the spleen, such as sweet potatoes, yams, peas, mung beans, lentils, kidney beans, adzuki beans, carrots, beets, corn, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, zucchini, yellow squash, rutabaga and pumpkin. These should be the main sources of carbs that satisfy your cravings for sweets as well.
What about grains? Some grains like quinoa, barley, teff, sorghum and amaranth and a starch like corn can help to dry the overly damp gut, so one serving a day (no more!) of those grains can work for most people with candida.
The same story follows for cold foods, which shouldn’t be consumed more than once per day. Therefore, don’t have a gut-friendly smoothie on the same day you have a salad. Your candida gut will heal most from warm nourishing foods.
As with any food, however, it’s always important to monitor how you feel after consuming a meal when you have candida. Some people who suffer stomach distress after eating any kind of starch, for instance, should avoid starchy vegetables like corn, peas, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkin, squash, zucchini and yams. Instead, they should eat non-starchy vegetables — typically the flowering parts of the plant — like lettuce, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, spinach, mushrooms, onions, peppers and tomatoes.
Also, keep fruit intake low as well as natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey.
3. Add cultured dairy, preferably goat milk kefir, for healthy probiotic foods can effectively kill the candida in your system. Kimchi and sauerkraut are good additions to your diet as well as unsweetened cranberry juice, as it creates an acidic environment that makes it difficult for candida to thrive.
Fermented vegetables contain microflora that helps to protect the intestines. Regular consumption can help improve the immune system, making the body less hospitable for candida. Begin with a half cup per day of sauerkraut, kimchi or other fermented vegetables as part of a new eating plan dedicated to bringing your body back into a healthy balance.
The candida diet helps to provide beneficial bacteria, regulate appetite, and reduce your cravings for refined carbohydrates and sugars.

Treatment 3: Supplements, Essential Oils & Coconut Oil
Research shows that candida albicans, the strain of candida that leads to systemic candida overgrowth is often resistant to both fluconazole and itraconazole, the drugs most often prescribed for candida.
1. Coconut oil can effectively fight candida due to its antimicrobial properties. (9) The combination of lauric acid and caprylic acid found in coconut oil, kills off harmful candida through both ingestion and topical application.
2. Milk thistle supplements help to cleanse your liver from prescription medications (steroids, birth control, antibiotics, as well as others), environmental pollution, heavy metals, and the remnants from both chemotherapy and radiation.
As mentioned above, some prescription medications, and cancer treatments can lead to candida overgrowth. Milk thistle, along with the candida diet, can help your body recover and create an environment where candida ceases to thrive.
3. Vitamin C helps to boost adrenal glands, and helps to restore your immune system. I recommend 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C twice per day.
4. Clove oil, oregano oil and myrrh oil help to kill a variety of parasites and fungi, including candida, in the body. Lavender oil also inhibits the growth of candida and is effective at preventing the spread of the infection. (10)
For example, by adding a couple of drops of clove oil or lavender oil, mixed with coconut oil during your cleanse, you can help to kill off the offending candida. Because these essential oils are powerful, they should only be taken internally for 10 days or less.
Also, for oral thrush, use three drops of clove oil with one tablespoon of coconut oil and swish in the mouth for 20 minutes.

Candida Die-Off Symptoms You May Experience
Rapidly killing off candida in your body creates a metabolic reaction that releases over 70 different toxins into your body. Symptoms that show the candida cleanse and the candida diet are working include:
  • Impaired brain function
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Intestinal distress including bloating, gas, constipation and nausea
  • Sweating and fever
  • Sinus infection
  • Skin breakouts (not limited to face)
  • Typical flu-like symptoms
When you start experiencing the candida die-off symptoms, rejoice! These symptoms usually clear up in seven to 10 days. The candida is leaving your body, and within just a few weeks, you will notice an increase in energy and focus, as well as relief from other symptoms you have experienced.
After your symptoms have subsided and you have completed the cleanse and the diet, you should continue eating a diet that is high in protein and high-fiber vegetables, and limit grains, fruits, sugar and high-starch vegetables like white potatoes. Continue to consume fermented vegetables and kefir to help your body stay in balance and keep the candida at bay.
