What Is Amethyst (Ethinyl Estradiol Levonorgestrel)?
Amethyst works by preventing the release of an egg from an ovary and causing changes in the cervical mucus of the uterine lining, making it harder for the fertilized egg to attach.
Birth control pills such as Amethyst may also be used to make periods more regular, ease painful periods, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts, and treat acne.
Amethyst is a continuous cycle birth control pill, which means users typically dont experience a menstrual period while they are taking the medicine.
Amethyst Warnings
Oral birth control pills may increase your risk of breast cancer, liver cancer, heart attack, stroke, or serious blood clot.Smoking while taking oral birth control pills can increase the chances of serious or life-threatening side effects, especially among women over 35 years of age who smoke 15 or more cigarettes a day.
Dont smoke while taking Amethyst.
Amethyst may also increase your risk of developing liver tumors that are not cancerous. However, these tumors can rupture and cause serious bleeding in the body.
You shouldnt take Amethyst if you have:
- Heart disease or any other serious heart disorder
- A history of heart attacks, strokes, or blood clots
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Problems with your eyes, kidneys, or circulation that are caused by diabetes
- Liver disease or liver cancer
- A history of hormone-related cancers such as breast or uterine cancer
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Severe migraine headaches
- A history of jaundice during pregnancy or while on birth control pills
- High blood pressure
- Varicose veins
- High cholesterol or triglycerides
- An underactive thyroid
- Gallbladder disease
- Depression or a history of depression
- Diabetes
- Seizures or epilepsy
- A history of irregular menstrual cycles
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- A history of fibrocystic breast disease
- An abnormal mammogram
Amethyst may cause skin discoloration. Avoid unnecessary sun exposure, sunlamps, and tanning beds while using this medicine.
If youre having surgery, including a dental procedure, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Amethyst.
You may experience breakthrough bleeding while using this medicine, especially during the first three months. Tell your doctor if the bleeding continues or is very heavy.
If you wear contact lenses and notice vision changes while taking Amethyst, you should see an eye doctor.
You might need to use back-up birth control methods when you first start taking this medicine. Follow your doctors instructions.
You also might need to use a back-up birth control method if youre sick with severe vomiting or diarrhea.
Pregnancy and Amethyst
Amethyst can cause birth defects. You shouldnt use this medication during pregnancy.Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or miss two menstrual periods in a row while taking Amethyst.
If youve recently had a baby, wait at least four weeks before starting on this medicine.
It might take you longer to become pregnant after stopping birth control pills. Talk to your doctor if youre concerned about this possibility.
Hormones in this drug can pass into breast milk and may harm a breastfeeding baby. Dont use Amethyst if youre breastfeeding.
Amethyst and Your Weight
In rare instances, Amethyst may causes weight loss or weight gain. However, you should not experience dramatic weight loss or weight gain while taking this drug.If you do, talk to your doctor.
Amethyst and "Healing Crystals"
Amethyst, the combination of estradiol and levonorgestrel is a prescription drug and should not be confused with so-called "healing crystals" sold online and elsewhere.The drug Amethyst should only be used as prescribed, to prevent pregnancy, make periods more regular, ease painful periods, decrease the risk of ovarian cysts, and/or treat acne.
Do not use it for any non-prescribed purposes or without a prescription.
Use Amethyst under the supervision of a medical professional.
Amethyst (Ethinyl Estradiol Levonorgestrel) Side Effects
- Mild nausea, bloating, stomach cramps, or vomiting
- Breast tenderness or swelling
- Nipple discharge
- Weight or appetite changes
- Vaginal itching or discharge
- Darkening of freckles or facial skin
- Increased hair growth
- Loss of scalp hair
- Changes in menstrual periods
- Decreased sex drive
Serious Side Effects of Amethyst
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:- Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden, severe headache, confusion, or problems with vision, speech, or balance
- Sudden cough, wheezing, or rapid breathing
- Coughing up blood
- Chest pain or chest heaviness
- Pain spreading to the arm or shoulder
- Severe nausea, sweating, or general ill feeling
- Swelling, pain, warmth, or redness in one or both legs
- Change in migraine severity or pattern
- Swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet
- Signs of liver problems, which may include nausea, upper stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- A breast lump
- Symptoms of depression, which may include trouble sleeping, weakness, fatigue, and mood changes
Amethyst (Ethinyl Estradiol Levonorgestrel) Interactions
- Bosentan (Tracleer)
- Antibiotics or TB medications
- Drugs to treat hepatitis C, HIV, or AIDS
- Phenobarbital (Luminal) and other barbiturates
- St. Johns wort
- Seizure medications
- Dantrolene (Dantrium)
- Tizanidine (Zanaflex)
- Tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron)
Amethyst (Ethinyl Estradiol Levonorgestrel) Dosage
Each Amethyst packet contains 28 active white pills. Take one pill each day, no more than 24 hours apart, until the pack is empty.
When your pills run out, start a new pack the following day. Its important to get your prescription refilled in a timely manner, so you dont run out of pills.
Your doctor will tell you when to start taking the pills and if you need to use a back-up birth control method.
Amethyst Overdose

Missed Dose of Amethyst
If you miss one pill, take it as soon as you remember and take the next pill at your regular time. This means you may take two pills on the same day.You could become pregnant if you have sex during the seven days after you restart your pills. Use a non-hormonal birth control method as a back-up for those seven days.
Two missed pills (and you remember on the day of the second missed pill): Take the two missed pills on the day you remember.
Then, the following day, go back to the one-pill-a-day schedule.
Three or more missed pills: Contact your doctor about what to do if you miss three or more pills in a row.
