Were all home together again!

Were all home together again!

We got up at 6:00 and left the farm by 6:45. Sue and John were up very late last night so we didnt wake them before we left. Stacking the crates behind the drivers seat is working well for long trips but it is pretty difficult to get my car in and out of the van so well be looking for other options driving around town. There was very little traffic as we headed south out of Guelph which was great since we ran into construction on the QEW. There was one car in line in front of us at the border so we zipped through there. Shortly after getting on the New York State turnpike, I asked Brent to drive while I slept. He woke me about 20 minutes before we got to my mom and step-dads house where we stopped for a short visit. Poor Laurel had to stay in her crate in the car (about which she complained bitterly and loudly) but Hardy got to come in and meet "Grandma" and "Grampa". He is a great little puppy but not perfect so he did jump up a couple times (although being careful not to touch the person). However, he didnt chase either of their cats, even though Callie was sitting in a chair in the sun room. Mostly he played with a couple toys on a rug in the living room or laid at my feet. He did say hello to my mom and Ron but not with the over-the-top enthusiasm Laurel showed as a puppy and they definitely appreciated his restraint! We headed home after about an hour and got in about 1:30. Although I planned to give both dogs baths (Hardy has been swimming in the swamp, after all), I fell asleep and didnt wake up for hours. Our cats have disappeared but I can feel their disapproval regarding the arrival of the big brown puppy - in their opinions, one yellow Lab is more than enough.

YG denies rumors of Big Bang enlisting together

YG denies rumors of Big Bang enlisting together

Article: [Exclusive] Big Bang to enlist together?... members agree to minimize hiatus

Source: Sports Donga via Nate

1. [+657, -28] Im most curious about whether GD will serve active duty or not

2. [+647, -44] GD and TOP are 100% going to serve in public service

3. [+437, -23] Every man in Korea must serve in the army but celebrities get praise for going active duty but even then some do all they can to get out of that

4. [+33, -5] Why do I feel like GD doesnt match army service at all ???? I want to see him in service

5. [+22, -2] I bet Big Bangs army hiatus will be shorter than the hiatus between their albums ???????????

-

Source: Naver

1. [+2,681, -45] Yeah, please just enlist all together if you guys are going. Weve waited hiatuses of three years even though it wasnt for the army so we can handle it ??

2. [+1,776, -43] Yeah, that seems like a good idea ??

3. [+1,653, -35] They have to serve anyway so they might as well enlist together and cut down on the hiatus for their fans... It seems like a good idea but it did seem like their CEO wanted them to serve separately which would take 10 years before the group is whole again ?? I hope the members push with their decision to serve together

4. [+1,116, -34] I can wait so dont worry and serve ??

5. [+210, -6] Big Bang rarely promotes on TV anyway so a hiatus of a year and 8 months probably wont even feel like a hiatus to fans ??

-

Article: YG, "Big Bang will not be enlisting as 5... GD and Taeyang have solo plans next year"

Source: Star News via Nate

1. [+186, -6] Itd be so much better to just enlist together and cut down on hiatus

2. [+164, -18] Whatever the case, I think GD will be in public service no matter what

3. [+47, -6] Just send them all together. It might suck at first but its the fastest way to make the group whole and promoting together again. Thats why YG shouldve paid more attention to supporting rookie talent instead of relying on Big Bang so much. Look at SM, TVXQ makes up a bulk of their income but they have so many more stars to rely on that TVXQ could enlist at the same time.

4. [+11, -4] If they all enlist in active duty together, itll do so much for improving their image and cut down on the hiatus time before theyre whole again. You only serve once, why not make it the best?

5. [+7, -0] I wonder how much theyre hating having to serve right now ???

-

Source: Naver

1. [+1,236, -7] They have long hiatuses anyway, why cant they all serve during?

2. [+565, -7] What the.. this is a mess of communication

3. [+414, -9] ????????

4. [+307, -20] They have to serve anyway, just go at the right time~~~ but I did hear from others with experience that enlisting at the same time with your friends is not a good idea, it usually puts a dent in your friendship..

5. [+151, -6] I can see why YG wouldnt want them to... their main income will be cut off ?

Seolhyun opens up about her CF income tanned skin on Happy Together 3

Seolhyun opens up about her CF income tanned skin on Happy Together 3

Article: Happy Together 3 Seolhyun, "My CF panel sold for up to 130,000 won" proud

Source: TV Report via Naver

1. [+3,605, -389] Seolhyun screwed up for sure but I think our knowledge of history in general has gone too. There were a lot of people on another TV show who couldnt differentiate between Kim Goo and Ahn Joong Geun... even more shocking were junior and high school students who named Samiljeol wrong.

2. [+4,441, -712] There is no future to a country whos forgotten its past

3. [+3,998, -596] This is... just the downfall for it. But its her mistake that caused it so theres no way of defending her.

4. [+3,077, -320] Her image has taken such a hit ??

5. [+1,310, -134] And why exactly is she proud of that? And why is she so confidently out on variety shows right now.. ????????????

6. [+1,237, -131] Pretty sure she was cut form that CF after her dumb brain was revealed

7. [+1,156, -132] Cant stand her anymore...

8. [+1,097, -116] Whoever bought her panel for 130,000 won is now an idiot ???

-

Article: Seolhyun clarifies 30 billion won CF income "Just an estimation"

Source: 10asia via Nate

1. [+278, -54] No point anymore since shes going to be cut from all her CFs now

2. [+255, -39] It was media play, not an estimation... FNCs total CF income was 39 billion won. Just how hard did they exaggerate by claiming that seolhyun made all of that alone?

3. [+206, -47] You were over the minute you messed up Ahn Joong Geun

4. [+35, -5] Ive been watching Yoo Jae Suk for 10 years now and Ive never seen him so uncomfortable

5. [+24, -1] Shes pretty but she proves that idols just get crushed next to actresses... and her skin is so dark too ?? shes no top class. And her image of being dumb is too engrained now...

6. [+9, -2] The biggest bubble Ive ever seen in my life, bubbles like her need to screw off

7. [+9, -3] Seolhyun has shot 21 CFs (including with AOA) so far and she was paid 150 million won in March (public information) so how does 21 x 1.5 = 30 billion won ??????? For perspective, the top female CF stars in Korea make a little over 10 billion won (like Jun Ji Hyun levle)

8. [+8, -3] What a joke, when someone claimed she made 30 billion won on Radio Star, she didnt refute or deny it. Did she forget that already, tin can brains?

-

Article: Seolhyun, "Embarrassment over my two tone face at award ceremony? I was trying to hide my dark skin"

Source: X Sports News via Daum

1. [+1,078, -148] Why not try hiding your brain too...

2. [+1,333, -429] Her face just oozes this cheapness to it. Even when shes smiling, she looks so gloomy and depressed. Instead of giving people positive energy with her smile, she gives them a sense of gloom.

3. [+818, -138] Itd be hilarious if she answered questions about her complexes by saying her level of history knowledge

4. [+508, -42] Does she not realize that this is not the time to be sitting there talking about her dark skin and bare face? Does she not realize the gravity of this issue?

5. [+528, -80] Shes trying hard, isnt she... her face looks so sad. There are some dark skinned people who look sexy and classy but she just looks tacky and countrified. After seeing her without her sexy make up on Brave Family and Law of the Jungle, she looks like one of those kids youd see around your local supermarket...

-

Article: Seolhyun, "My perfect waist line? It folds over when I lay down" honest

Source: MBN TV via Nate

1. [+726, -134] Shes showing how bad she is at acting on a variety show right now

2. [+668, -189] Doesnt study history, fakes her tears, has the determination level of T-ara on shoving herself on TV shows... whatever the case, jail Kangin

3. [+550, -63] Unless youre super skinny, doesnt everyone have their waist fold over when they lay down?

4. [+56, -17] Its obvious shes being shameless and just trying to shove through this controversy but I wish shed stop. But of course the idiot men without brains will probably still be drooling over her.

5. [+52, -8] She got popular for ridiculous reasons, its about time she lost that popularity too

6. [+50, -11] After seeing her on this show, its like shes holding on to her teeth with her mouth.. she cant keep it shut

7. [+44, -8] All I can see is her teeth... why does she keep her mouth open like that? Must be a habit

8. [+35, -2] Shes not the smart type... shes the type that the more you hear her talk, the less it does for her image. Theres a lot of things she lacks in when you listen to the words she chooses and the way she strings together her sentences. That can be a charm in itself but she needs to learn more things inside her head

Laurel and Hardy are working together to alert and perform tasks

Laurel and Hardy are working together to alert and perform tasks

Laurel and Hardy have been working together to teach him to alert for severe muscle spasms and also to perform various tasks. With the change in temperature Ive been having more muscle spasms than usual and Laurel has been alerting to them. Whats interesting is that she works to get Hardys attention when she alerts and actively encourages him to mimic her. Laurel knows what body part is going to spasm and it seems that Hardy is catching on to that as well. A couple times now he has alerted before Laurel and he has nudged the correct spot. Since I feel more confident in my ability to teach him to do the diabetes alert, Im thrilled that Laurel is teaching him the other two.
Over the past couple days, my two goofy Labs have also been tag-teaming picking things up for me. Laurel will find something under a table or tangled in cords and will get it out into the open. Then, she shows it to Hardy and will step aside so that he can come and pick it up to bring to me. I have some old credit and gift cards that I use for training so Hardy has gotten very good at picking them up off our hardwood floor. Of course, when he brings the object to me, we all have a big party involving dog treats or toys!
I was concerned that I was going to have to crate Laurel or in some other way discourage her from doing all the tasks in order for Hardy to learn them. One time when Hardy was much younger, he went to pick up my shoe and Laurel pushed him away so she could bring it to me so I am thrilled that Laurel has now taken on the role of teacher. And Im not sure which one of them is prouder when Hardy brings me something!

Wow! Our time together flew by!

Wow! Our time together flew by!

Devin took an earlier flight than excepted so he got here Thursday afternoon. He met Hardy for the first time and fell in love with his easy-going, calm nature. Kristen, Sean and Soapy arrived that evening so the canine "cousins" had plenty of time to play. Hardy and Soapy behaved beautifully with each other and all three got along without any problems. Laurel did turn into the "fun police" and it was obvious that Soapys "puppy license" with her expired while he was away. Soapy doesnt read older dogs social cues very well but Laurel is pretty persistent so she kept after him. Even with 7 adult humans and 3 dogs in our family room, Laurel, Hardy and Soapy were so well behaved that no one got run out of the room.
Yesterday was a wonderful day! Kristen and Sean took Soapy to see Kate Hornick, a veterinarian and friend who also owns Maynard, Soapys dad. She was very pleased with how he is doing and gave him a clean bill of health. Everyone worked together to create an amazing Thanksgiving dinner. We made our traditional mushroom stuffing and my Mom & Ron brought some wonderful vegetables from their garden. Sean made a delicious pumpkin pie and we got  apple and rhubarb ones from Pattersons Orchard. We were so into it being Thanksgiving that we were surprised that other people werent celebrating the holiday! It was wonderful to have almost our entire family (sadly, Anthony was missing) together!
This morning, Sean, Kristen and Soapy left to drive to Seans family on Long Island. Devin, Brent and I are currently watching the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. We need to start packing though because well be dropping Devin off at the airport at about 4:00 and then heading to a hotel in Elyria, in preparation for competing tomorrow at the C-WAGS trial in Vermilion.
Since Soapy left, Laurel and Hardy have been sleeping - it was a big couple days for them!

Brain IDEAS Symposium August 5, 2016
By Guest Blogger Wayne Connell, Founder and President, Invisible Disabilities® Association
Neuroplasticity, brain training, brain-based therapy, rewire your brain, brain mapping, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness, therapeutic humor, microbiome, unconscious mind, attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia, Alzheimer’s, Down syndrome, nutrition, stroke, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI). We hear so many scientific and medical buzzwords today. What do they all mean and why should I care? Very good question!
I am sure you have heard the phrase, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” People usually make this comment when we find out some habit or trait about a person and we believe, that’s just the way they are, or when we are trying to teach someone something new and it doesn’t seem to be catching on.
Animals are trained to perform certain tricks or to behave in a certain way until it’s ingrained in them. Over and over and over again until they get it right and it becomes second nature to them. Try teaching a dog to “not sit” once they have learned the command “sit!” I guess we could possibly teach them to stand versus to not sit. Sounds complicated to me and probably hard to teach especially after many, many dog years of sitting on command. This is the reason why it is tough to teach an old dog new tricks or almost impossible to unlearn existing ones.
As humans, we are in the same boat. I have some habits that I have been trying to break for years and while trying to create new ones: for example, to stop eating so much sugar and start exercising more. After decades of eating too much and not exercising enough, changing my brain has, let’s say, been quite difficult. And as I have told my wife, I’ll try somehow because I’m not getting any younger or lighter and I know what’s best for my long-term health. And yes, illness can play a huge factor in weight gain or loss issues – I’m just talking about me personally. I love sweets! What can I say?
A big part of my struggle has to do with the way my brain has been wired since I was a kid. We always had snacks after school and dessert after meals. That’s the way it was! Is it possible to rewire my brain or yours to help us change habits or overcome trauma or maybe even some illness or disability we are experiencing? Hebb’s Law roughly translated is that two neurons that fire together, wire together. I have spent many years wiring those oh-so-sweet neurons together and therefore my brain is telling me, eat dessert first, always eat dessert and the bigger the better!
Can my brain be changed? Yes, I believe it can through a process scientists have discovered about the brain called neuroplasticity.  According to Heidi Hanna, Ph.D., in her book, “The Sharp Solution: A Brain-Based Approach for Optimal Performance”:
Thanks to advances in technology that took place about two decades ago, scientists have discovered that the brain isn’t actually “hardwired” after all. Pioneering neuroscientists demonstrated that through the right type of training, people could relearn abilities they’d lost through severe brain damage, with different parts of the brain taking on new roles in the operation of the body. This discovery, known as neuroplasticity, means that the brain is radically adaptable when given the right stimulus, and allotted an adequate amount of recovery. The existence of neuroplasticity doesn’t just mean that we can heal the brain. It also means that we can potentially rewire existing mental maps-which are the connections between brain cells-so that they function in a way that best serves us, thereby leading to optimal health. happiness, and performance.
I now have hope in being able to finally break some of those bad habits and create new ones thanks to my brain’s neuroplasticity. Daniel Amen, M.D., the founder of the renowned Amen Clinics says:
Many people think our brains are set in stone, but in fact our lifestyles and life circumstances always affect that three-pound organ in our head. Brain changes result from many causes, including developmental experiences, emotional traumas, substance abuse, physical brain trauma, infections, and many other things. Your brain can and does change because of stress—for example, we know that cells in the hippocampus die when an individual experiences prolonged stress—and therein lies the risk of more negative changes in a person’s life when they don’t listen soon enough to their too-busy brains. In fact, according to a comprehensive survey conducted by the National Institutes of Mental Health, more than half of Americans are expected to develop a mental illness in their lifetimes. Calming your busy brain reduces the chance that things will get worse.
But if brain change can be for the worse, it can also be for the better. The great discovery of what we call self-directed neuroplasticity is that the brain is not fixed, but rather in constant flux, and that you can actually change your brain for the better. Circuits can be rewired; brain maps can be redrawn. New neural pathways can sprout to accommodate new functions or new environments. Whatever your experiences in childhood and beyond, it is possible to learn new ways of thinking, reacting, and behaving; new patterns can be established.
It does seem that maybe we can now teach an old dog new tricks. Of course, I need to do something about it. I can’t exercise more by sitting all day. I need to be active in the change. I need to add data to my brain that help’s rewire it. I need to start firing new neurons about the joy and health benefits of exercising. John Arden, Ph.D., author of “Rewire Your Brain,” states:
Neuroplasticity is what makes memory possible… the point is that the brain changes its synapses when you remember something new. The brain would not be able to record anything new if it were hardwired. Remembering something new is, therefore, rewiring the brain. By making connections between ideas or images, you also make connections between the neurons that encode those ideas and images.
Neuroplasticity illustrates the phrase “Use it or lose it.” When you use the synaptic connections that represent a skill, you strengthen them, and when you let the skill lie dormant, you weaken those connections. It’s similar to the way that your muscles will weaken if you stop exercising.
“Cells that fire together wire together” aptly describes the way your brain reorganizes when you have new experiences. The more you do something in a particular way, use words with a specific accent, or remember something about your past, the more the neurons that fire together to make this happen will strengthen their connections. The more the neurons fire together, the more likely it is that they will fire together in the future.
I am eagerly anticipating the changes in my own life, such as increasing my exercise and enjoying sweets less frequently. I am even more thrilled to see the increasing focus on changes in the lives of those living daily with sometimes devastating effects of illness, pain and trauma by the leading brain doctors and scientists of today.
The focus on the brain is also helping children with ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, autism and learning disabilities. Bruce Wexler, M.D., in an interview on medium.com mentions that:
Scientists have started deliberately harnessing neuroplasticity to treat illnesses of the brain, improve education in children, and optimize cognition throughout the lifespan. This is the neuroscience foundation of brain training. It is based on principles like “neurons that fire together wire together.” Neuroscience-based brain-training programs are designed to produce activity-dependent functional enhancement of targeted neural systems.
Understanding all of the scientific terms, treatments and technologies surrounding neuroplasticity can be daunting at best. The good news is that at the Invisible Disabilities® Association, we are trying to bring together cutting edge science, dynamically revealed and accessible to everyone through our Brain IDEAS Symposiums. IDEAS stands for Invisible Disabilities® Education and Support.
Our second annual Brain IDEAS Symposium will be in Denver on August 5. The four incredible doctors and scientists mentioned above: Heidi Hanna, Ph.D., co-founder of the Institute for Integrative Neuroscience and chief energy officer at SYNERGY who will present on mental training; Daniel Amen, M.D., 2016 Healthy Living Award recipient; John Arden, Ph.D., chief academic officer at the Institute of Brain Potential, 2016 IDA Research Award recipient and moderator for Brain Disorders Panel; and Bruce Wexler, M.D., founding scientist at C8 Sciences, professor of psychiatry at Yale Medical School, 2016 Innovation Award recipient and presenter on ADHD and ADD will be participating in this year’s event along with nine other gifted experts.  Below are the additional 2016 symposium presenters and moderators:
  • Ron Minson, M.D., clinical director, Integrated Listening Systems, presenting on dyslexia, autism and learning disabilities.
  • Huntington Potter, Ph.D., director, Rocky Mountain Alzheimer’s Disease Center, University of Colorado, presenting on Alzheimer’s and Down syndrome.
  • Jon Clinthorne, Ph.D., nutrition education specialist supervisor, Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, presenting on nutrition and the microbiome.

  • Lacey Berumen, Ph.Dc., M.N.M., C.A.C., I.I.I., board member, National Alliance on Mental Illness – faculty member, University of Phoenix, moderating brain therapy panel.
Go to BrainIDEAS.org to learn more or to register for this year’s symposium. For those who are unable to attend, you can watch online last year’s presentations at2015.BrainIDEAS.org.
So here goes the retraining of my brain. We can make a change. We can do it together. Let’s help one another and envision a world together where people living with illness, pain and disability will be Invisible No More®.
And I hear chocolate calling my name. Wait, firing the wrong neurons. Oh there is it, my wife says I look good because I have been exercising. Now the right neurons are firing and wiring together! Let’s all be Wired Together!
