Were all home together again!

Were all home together again!

We got up at 6:00 and left the farm by 6:45. Sue and John were up very late last night so we didnt wake them before we left. Stacking the crates behind the drivers seat is working well for long trips but it is pretty difficult to get my car in and out of the van so well be looking for other options driving around town. There was very little traffic as we headed south out of Guelph which was great since we ran into construction on the QEW. There was one car in line in front of us at the border so we zipped through there. Shortly after getting on the New York State turnpike, I asked Brent to drive while I slept. He woke me about 20 minutes before we got to my mom and step-dads house where we stopped for a short visit. Poor Laurel had to stay in her crate in the car (about which she complained bitterly and loudly) but Hardy got to come in and meet "Grandma" and "Grampa". He is a great little puppy but not perfect so he did jump up a couple times (although being careful not to touch the person). However, he didnt chase either of their cats, even though Callie was sitting in a chair in the sun room. Mostly he played with a couple toys on a rug in the living room or laid at my feet. He did say hello to my mom and Ron but not with the over-the-top enthusiasm Laurel showed as a puppy and they definitely appreciated his restraint! We headed home after about an hour and got in about 1:30. Although I planned to give both dogs baths (Hardy has been swimming in the swamp, after all), I fell asleep and didnt wake up for hours. Our cats have disappeared but I can feel their disapproval regarding the arrival of the big brown puppy - in their opinions, one yellow Lab is more than enough.

All Aboard the SofaBoat!

All Aboard the SofaBoat!

Turning our two couches into a SofaBoat has been a tradition in our family since we became one. Bryan and I would push the two couches together when we were first married. Wed cuddle up to lounge and watch movies. It is one of our favorite family things to do. Adding Shepherd to the mix makes it even better.

Bryan and I have largely opposite schedules so spending family time together is rare, let alone having much alone chill time. On Saturday night, Papa and Lee asked if Shepherd could spend the night with them and we figured hes old enough to enjoy the experience. Plus, Shepherd in the morning is something everyone should experience. His morning cuddles are the best. So, we decided now was as good a time as any and it was good that we were in the same town for his first night away from us!

As you can see, he was pretty excited to go! Oh, did I mention that this was the first night that Bryan and I have both slept away from him? We had planned on my going to go out to Harris Ranch with Bryan for his gig and to spend the night, but after that huge school project, I just wasnt up for it. So, unbeknownst to Bryan, I planned a low-key night at home!

I moved the couches (all by myself) to SofaBoat position, rented Get On Up from Redbox, and laid out our favorite pajamas. I went to Target to pick up some of our favorite movie theater candy and threw a cozy blanket down. I wanted a really cozy atmosphere so I lit some PartyLite tealights. I think Bryan was pretty surprised when he walked in! I even set up two ottomans, one to help getting into the SofaBoat and one to hold coffee/remotes. :)

Of course we made sure the SofaBoat was still together for Shepherd once we picked him up from Papa and Lee. He loves it. Actually, its still together. As I write this, we are all chilling in the boat. Well, not Shepherd hes climbing all over Bryan. We love SofaBoat!

We loved the movie and didnt end up getting into any of the snacks. We spent time working in the studio and Bryan built my sewing table! Im so excited to learn to sew. You know, in-between school, work, mom-ing/wife-ing, the blog, Lauriana Cosmetics, LCs blog, and various video projects. :)

Hope you had a great weekend!

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth

Matthews other top front tooth fell out early this morning (he pulled it out at 4am), so he now has an even bigger gap at the top of his mouth giving him a dracula-esque appearance.  His bottom two adult teeth have been through for a while now, and his other top front tooth has started to put in an appearance although is so far only poking slightly through.  Hes now had five of his baby teeth fall out, the same number as his friend Isaac who lost his fifth tooth yesterday.

This evening Matthew told me that three girls in year 1 are in love with him - Charlie, Gwen and Amelia - but hes not in love with any of them because he likes Seren from year 2.  Matthew used to like Charlie last year, but she was in love with Jimi - I cant keep up.  Its a bit like some kind of teen soap opera for six year olds.  Its good to hear that hes popular, though.  Apparently he was lying on the floor and the three girls were trying to pick him up.

All Souls Day

All Souls Day

Im thankful that the weather cleared just in time to give our family a chance to go to the cemetery to offer prayers for the departed.

It has become a tradition for many Filipino families to pay respect to departed loved ones every Nov. 1 and 2.

Part Science Part Art All Heart

Part Science Part Art All Heart

A dentist in the Inland Empire used these words to describe his profession.  I feel they really apply to optometry.  A major part of our profession of course deals with “science.”  Development in lens styles, treating disease and measuring visual findings has improved due to developments in science.  In dealing with the “art” however, we are dealing with the human mind, 2+ 2 doesnt always equal 4.  If it did, there would be one best contact lens, one best style for frames, and basically we would never have to redo someone’s glasses due to comfort.  We would just put them in front of a computer and it would come out with a prescription and it would be perfect.  This does not exist.  Also, there is not just one great drug or treatment for a disease.  The “art” part comes from experience and listening to the patient.  When you deal with a patient, everyone is an individual and you must as a practitioner, accommodate and interpret the findings around the patient.
The “heart” part of the statement is particularly true in optometry.  Nobody cares what you know until they know that you care (an old proverb).  There is a lot of empathy surrounding my profession, or at least there should be.  You have to listen to the wants and needs of a patient.  This could never be ascertained by just a computer finding or just asking, “which is better, one or two?”  Just the fact that you show care for a patient could make the difference whether your treatment is successful.  Patients want to be listened to and feel their concerns are being addressed and considered and as individuals, they want to be valued.

Whatever happened to the end of May and all of June

Whatever happened to the end of May and all of June

Oh yes.  Here it is.  In photos.

Inside playground.

Catching crawdads and playing with Suki dog at Whitneys birthday celebration.

Obsessed with playing in the dirt and sand with his dozers, trucks, tractors and diggers.

Meme and Papaw visit.

Tyler lets Uncle Josh near him - on purpose - but just because Uncle Josh was willing to be the engine on the tractor.

Lily helping Tyler up on the swing, pushing him and doing "under dog."

Picking (eating) strawberries at Whipkers.

Mama Fonner and sisters hit up Nashville.

Lily and I did the Girlfriend (bicycle) Ride together.  All 25k!  We start off with breakfast and a chocolate fountain.  Then headed off.  We got about 2 miles in and Lily wanted to know if it was almost over yet cause her butt hurt.  I called Joel and put him on standby to ready to come pick her up at mile 6 which was the first stop.

But then we got there and Lily saw all the spread of food - donuts, candy, cookies, gatorade, watermelon, chips, etc etc etc she suddenly felt strong enough to complete the whole event.  Thats my girl!  Nothing motivates quite like donuts and M&Ms.

While the girlies were at the bike ride, the boys went to the airport to see some cool planes and trucks.

Saturday morning donuts in the car after grocery shopping.  Their reward for not fighting over the shopping cart.

Lily gets a big girl bikini (in other words, one without cartoon characters on it).

Bronco rides.

Tantrums.  Each kid could have a whole post dedicated to their tantrums but just thinking about it makes me tired.  Instead, heres the aftermath of a tantrum thrown by Tyler.  I was out of town during this escapade, but I think Tyler didnt want to go potty or put on his pull up or something before nap time and threw a fit.  Joel gave up and locked him in his room.  He went back a little bit later and ol Tyler had passed out without pants on.  This is one for the senior year slide show!

These are pictures of "sick" Lily.  You cant really tell it, but she had puked on Joel when he dropped her off at daycare one morning (I was out of town).  So he had to turn around and go back home (and take a vacation day) to stay home with her.  She drew pictures.

 Lily and Tyler

Mama (arent I beautiful???)

Daddy

Joel asked her if that was his wiener hanging down between his legs.  Lily said, "No.  Its your poop.  Youre in the bathroom pooping."  Nice.  Real nice, Lily.

Lily ensuring that Tylers feet are squeaky clean.  Someone just needs to feed him grapes.

Lots of swimming in the back yard.

Wardrobe malfunctions...

We went to the potty.  A lot.  I do not understand Joels fascination with taking pictures of the kids while they are on the pot.  Hes an odd bird.

In addition to peeing on toilets, we took our turn peeing on trees.

This one of Lily happened during a GINORMOUS tantrum she was throwing while on a return bike ride from the playground.  She screamed the whole ride and was nearly left on the side of the rode about 3 times.  At this point in the trip, she had been screaming for 15 minutes that she had to potty (which was totally not true, but thats her "go to" phrase when she wants some attention).  So I finally pulled over and yanked her pants off and told her to potty on the tree cause there were no toilets around.  And Joel snapped a photo.

Here are some other pictures of family bike rides.  Not all end in horror.

Having a picnic at the playground.

The kids enjoyed swimming lessons for all of 2 out of 8 days.  The first 2 days were great.  They participated, they had fun.  Lily took care of her brother.

However after that, neither of them wanted to participate.  We kept right on trying through day 5 before we just gave the hell up.    Days 3, 4 and 5 were sheer misery.  M-I-S-E-R-Y.  They love to swim but apparently do not enjoy being told what to do when they are swimming.

What the?  What a grown up little MAN!  I think he was telling Joel that he looked like "Todd."  Todd is a fried of Joels and the kids are kind of obsessed with him.

Heres Tyler checking out chickens at Todds house.  And playing in the mud.

Airplane rides.

This is known as a gaggle of grand babies. Audrey is MIA in this photo - probably she was in hiding due to the extreme noise.

First swim of the season in Grams pool.

And that about does it for June.
