TUESDAY, June 14, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- The blood sugar-lowering drug Victoza (liraglutide) cuts the risk of heart attack and stroke in type 2 diabetes patients, a new study finds.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among people with type 2 diabetes, the researchers noted.
The study was funded by the drugs maker, Novo Nordisk, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It included more than 9,300 adults from 32 countries who have type 2 diabetes and a high risk of heart disease.
About half took Victoza, while the other half took an inactive placebo. Both groups also took other medications for health problems, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, the study authors said.
Tracking patients for three years, the researchers found that compared with patients in the placebo group, people who took Victoza had a 13 percent lower risk of heart attack or stroke. They also had a 22 percent lower risk of death from heart disease; a 15 percent lower risk of death from any cause; and a 22 percent lower risk of new evidence of advanced kidney disease.
Some patients did discontinue the drug due to "gastrointestinal events," according to the report.
The study was presented June 13 at the American Diabetes Associations annual meeting, in New Orleans. It was also published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine.
"Ive been excited about liraglutide for a long time because I think its unique," said study senior author Dr. John Buse. He directs the Diabetes Care Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
"This is the first diabetes drug that has shown across-the-board benefits for cardiovascular diseases, and this suggests it plays a role in treating atherosclerosis [hardening of the arteries], which is what leads to heart attacks and strokes," Buse said in a university news release.
One diabetes expert called the study "encouraging."
Victoza "is a relatively new medication, given by daily injection," said Dr. Allison Reiss, who runs the inflammation laboratory at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y.
Still, the long-term effectiveness of the drug is unknown, Reiss added. "It will be important to follow these patients over the next few years to see whether [Victoza] benefits continue and to investigate how it is working," she said.
The researchers explained that Victoza is from a newer class of diabetes drugs known as GLP-1 agonists. These medications work in the pancreas to cut the production of an anti-insulin hormone called glucagon. The drugs boost insulin production and help control blood sugar levels.
As a secondary mechanism, Victoza also works on the brain to help lower appetite and boost feelings of "fullness" when eating, Buses team explained.
Reiss noted that because of this activity, Victoza can help spur weight loss -- and that might be the prime factor driving the improvements in heart health.
Dr. Gerald Bernstein coordinates the Friedman Diabetes Program at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He said that Victoza -- and other drugs in its class -- are being increasingly used, so "decreased cardiovascular risk is an important finding."
Type 2 diabetes affects more than 29 million Americans, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sticks and Stones May Break Your Bones So Does Falling in Showers

Sticks and Stones May Break Your Bones So Does Falling in Showers

Not long after Tyler came out of the womb and I found out he was a he, I braced myself for roughhousing and dirt, farting and burping, blood and broken bones that is stereotypical of raising boys.   In his short 3.5 years, weve now experienced all of that.

Tyler broke his arm.

The crazy thing though is that he didnt even break it "being a boy."  Not jumping off the back of the couch playing super heroes or rough playing with his sister or attempting a crazy stunt at the playground.  He fell in the shower.  So pretty much the same way the elderly break bones!

Lately on bath night, Joel has been giving the kids a shower right when he gets home with them after school before I get home from work.  That way, bath is all done and were in less of a mad dash to get through dinner and bath before bedtime.

Picture this.  Columbus.  2016.  Lily is 5 with a going on 15 kind of attitude and she was dishing it out from the moment she was picked up from school.  Joel even texted me and said "take a moment for yourself now, before you get home, Lilys in rare form."

For the last several months, theyve taken showers in our master bathroom instead of bathes in their own bathroom.  So Joel starts working on their showers and convinces Lily to go first.  He gets her through and shes still dishing the attitude and making demands on Joels attention.  Meanwhile Tylers ready to get in the shower.  You can imagine the three ring circus, right?  So Joel go to deal with Lily and Tyler goes ahead and gets in the shower.  When doing so, he slips and falls.  Joels back was to him so he didnt see it happen so were not sure if he landed on his arm or if it was the act of him putting his arm out to catch himself that did it.  Either way, the screaming and the swelling was instant.

Joel assumed right away that his arm was broken.

He calls me right away.  I almost didnt pick up because I was already on the phone with one of my employees and texting with another trying to get him conferenced in.  But something told me to pick up so put my work phone on mute and answered my cell.

[screaming in the background]
Me, "Hi whats up? Im on the phone."
Joel, "Guess what happened?"
Me, "What?"
"Pretty sure Tyler broke his arm."
"WHAT?  Oh my God!  What do you want me to do? -- [unmute work phone] HEATHER I HAVE TO GO RIGHT NOW!  EMERGENCY AT HOME!! [slam down work phone] -- Do you want me to meet you at the hospital?  Do you want me to come home?  What do you need me to do?"
"Come home."

So I grab up my stuff and RUN out of the building.  Tear across the parking lot and drive like a bat out of hell across town.  And at 5:10, that means hitting every single light red.  But somehow I still ran through the door at home 15 minutes after Joel called me.  So grateful for living in this small town!

Meanwhile Joels dealing with a screaming Tyler and a Lily that is still demanding Joels attention because she clearly doesnt understand the gravity of the situation.  Finally Joel yells at her to be quiet and go get dressed immediately because we have to take Tyler to the hospital because hes hurt very bad.  She snaps out of her attitude at that and starts complying with instructions.

I come in the door and Tylers laying on our bed clothed and ready to go.  Hes got a makeshift splint on his arm with a couple of small boards tied up with Walmart sacks!  Joel had cut a t-shirt up the side to get it on him and pinned it back together with safety pins.  So resourceful and creative - even under stress.  Very impressive!

Joel packs up Tyler in the car, who is whimpering by this time but not screaming.  I start throwing random food in a Walmart sack because I have no idea what a trip to the ER will look like - how long well be there or whatever - and its nearly dinner time.  Leave it to me - were in crisis mode and I think to grab food.

Joel and I drive separate in case one of us needs to bring Lily back home.  On the way, I am chatting about anything I can think of to keep Tyler distracted.  We talked about X-rays which they had just learned about at school the week before.  Tyler asked if it was going to print out on a paper that he can take home.  So cute.

Lily was trying to comfort him by touching his shoulder or leg or anything she can reach.  Which hes really not interested in.  It kind of broke my heart further to have to tell Lily that while what she was doing was really kind and sweet, but Tyler just needed to be left alone.

We get to the ER and its FREEZING and windy enough to practically blow us all away.  Of course in our mad dash out of the house neither kid had a coat on.  A night full of awesome parenting moments.

Thank the Lord, we are seen right away at the ER.

They took Tylers vitals and wheeled him back to a room where we waited to get the X-rays.  They wouldnt give him any pain medicine until he saw the doctor and that wasnt going to happen until after the X-rays.  I was losing my mind over this, feeling sick that Tyler was in pain.  But, he was in decent spirits during this time.  Not crying much - just an occasional whimper and request to go home.

After about 20 minutes we make our way to the X-ray room - all of us tromping along with Tyler trying to stay out of the way.  Once in the X-ray room only one of us could stay so I did.  This was the absolute worst part of the experience (for me).  The X-ray tech had to move Tys arm around a bit to get a good picture and that caused him so much pain.  He was screaming and crying huge fat tears and I was trying not to cry and the tech was doing his best not to hurt poor Tyler and the whole thing was just awful.  Im not sure how long we were in there - maybe 15 minutes?  Felt like eternity.

Then tromp back to the room while waited for the doctor to review the X-rays.  That was probably another 20 minutes.  Then he comes in and confirms its broken and starts talking about maybe need surgery, dont know, have to talk to the orthopedic doctor, probably dont need surgery but not for him to say and blah blah blah.  Joel and I kind of freak out at the word "surgery" but we hold it together.

Tyler then FINALLY gets some pain meds and they put a splint on him - with slightly better materials than wood scraps and Walmart sacks.

We finally get out of there after about 2 hours total - which was far less time than I was anticipating.  Joel, the bad ass Dad, makes Tyler walk out of the ER on his own two feet.  And tells him to smile for a picture.  Tylers face says it all.

I was really worried about how much pain Tyler was in and whether he would be able to sleep.  But they gave him tylenol with hydrocodone and he slept really well from about 8:30pm until 3:00am when he woke up crying out in pain.  I fly out of my bedroom and rush to him and hes crying, "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, my arm still hurts.  It hurts, Mommy, it hurts."  I rush to get him more medicine and moments after I do he starts to relax and close his eyes and drifts right back off to sleep.  Whew.

The next morning, Tyler gets up, hyper as all get out.  Talking a million miles an hour about any and everything.  I think he was high on hydrocodone.  He was totally silly and completely bouncing off the walls.  It was cute and a little disconcerting at the same time.  I was just sure he was going to try to do a cartwheel or flip or flying superhero leap and just injure himself further.  He was insisting on wearing these shoes from Jackson which were about 3 sizes too big and I just KNEW he was going to trip and fall.

I went off to work and Joel stayed home with Tyler and called the orthopedic doctor first thing so we could get an appointment to have him checked out there.  We were lucky and got an appointment pretty early in the day so I met them over there.

While we were waiting, Tyler was goofing around, acting completely silly and HIGH AS A KITE.  He was exercising, stretching and running (trying to prove to me that his shoes WERE NOT too big and he WAS NOT going to fall).

We get back to the exam room and finally get to see a picture of the X-ray.  We were completely shocked and expecting something far worse than what we saw, based on the swelling we saw the night before.  The bulge on the bottom side of his arm is what we THOUGHT was his bone pushing out.  But it wasnt at all, it was the swelling.  The orthopedic doctor said that in children blood production happens all throughout their skeletal system (vs adults, its concentrated in certain areas).  So when a child breaks a bone, theres typically a lot of swelling because of all the blood pooling.

The doctor tells us that its your "everyday stereotypical little boy / little girl broken arm."  The break isnt in the growth plate and is very straight forward in terms of healing.  He only needs to wear the cast for probably about 4 weeks.

We asked him what color cast he wanted and without hesitation, he chose blue.  Joel took about 87 pictures.  Heres just a few.

After finishing up at the doctor, Joel took Tyler to the mall to buy the kid some new shoes.  I was pretty sick of fighting with him about wearing Jacksons too big shoes.  They run over to the mall and find some Batman shoes.  Tyler shows Joel how fast he run through the mall in his new shoes.  They sent me a video.  It was pretty hysterical.

That afternoon, Tyler finally got the bath that he was meant to get the day before.  Comes out looking handsome as ever with his new shoes, shark hair and bad ass cast!  And wearing a Mr Lucky T-shirt which his Daddy thought was hilariously ironic.

May 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag Value First Impression and Swatches

May 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag Value First Impression and Swatches

I got home today and I was so happy to see my Ipsy Glam Bag. arrived! I, of course, grabbed my phone so that I could snap pictures while I opened it. This is a first impression style blog!

In case you live under a rock, Ipsy is a monthly subscription where you pay $10 + tax to receive a cute make-up bag filled with four or five sample (or full size) make-up products from varying brands! It is so fun to get a little pink package in the mail every month!

You can see my reviews on the past few months by clicking here.

Theme: Fresh Picks
Description: Its a month of crisp air, vibrant flowers, and fresh Glam Bag products! Getting your beauty to bloom all month long will be as easy as lying in the warm grass and basking in the sunshine.

The first thing I did was take out the bag. Obviously. It is a canvas bag with green vines all over it. Its really cute, but the zipper was actually kind of horrible. I havent had to tug so hard to get a makeup bag open in a long time! It was really noticeably difficult, which is weird because in my four months of getting Ipsy bags, I havent experienced anything like that. Im hoping that it was just a fluke with my bag and not a widespread problem!

Here are the items I received. Im going to come right out the gate and say that I was REALLY hoping to get a sample of Chocolate Soleil. I was really bummed when I saw that I didnt receive it, especially because I made the mistake of watching Michelle Phans video about it! Oh well. Ill try that bronzer someday!

Item: Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Elusive 2.7g (full size)
Value: $8-9.00 (depending on where you shop. CVS.com at $9.49)

The first item I grabbed was this Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm in Elusive. The color is really pretty and I have two others of these lippies but I dont have this color, thankfully. Ive swatched it below.

The color is definitely something I would wear. Its a cool toned pink color. While I primarily want Ipsy so that I can scope out other brands, Revlon is such a solid brand with good products. How can you be disappointed in a no fail item like this?!

Item: Pacifica Mineral Eyeshadow Duo .07oz (exclusive to Ipsy sample size)
Value: $3.50 (approx.)

So I took this picture, set my phone down, opened up the lid and it popped right off! I couldnt believe it! At first I thought it was broken, but I was able to stick it back on there. Not very well though because it came off again when I was swatching it. Ive never had a Pacifica product before but that wasnt a very good first impression!

The colors in this duo are actually kind of interesting. At first, when you look you think its a cream/pink shade with a bronze brown. Not so. That cream shade has a lot of pink in it, almost to the point of bright (hot?) pink. Its so hard to photograph well!

I was not impressed at ALL with the cream shade when I swatched it though. It was pretty powdery. The bronze shade was really nice though. Here they are swatched on my hand. You can barely see them, but using a good primer or a white base would probably make them pop. Well see how it goes! I showed you the swatch on my finger tips, for good measure. You can kind of see the powdery consistency of the lighter shade.

This duo is described to contain coconut infused mineral eye shadows that are a perfect addition to any makeup collection. Packaged in a recyclable container, these duos were customized for Ipsy (read: not available for sale.) The colors in this duo are Celestial and Opal.

Item: Hang Ten Sunscreen 50SPF 1oz (sample size)
Value: $2.16 (Full size is 6oz for 12.99)

This formula is suuuuuper watery. Or maybe I just should have shaken it to mix it all up? When I swatched it a lot more came out than what I was meaning for and I was like whoooa! A lot of sunscreen is a bit on the thin side but this, I feel like, was more so. I didnt spread it around because I was going outside and I didnt want my hand to have a weird light spot if I ended up getting any color. It smelled nice!

The product claims to protect and nourish your skin with their clear, lightweight, naturally scented sunscreen. Waaaaait. I swatched it. Its not clear! It also says it provides maximum water resistance and full body coverage against harmful UVA/UVB rays. The description on the website says its 80 minutes water resistant, non-greasy and is oxybenzone free, paraben free, retinyl palmitate free, synthethic fragrance free and is non-nano.

Item: derma e Microdermabrasion Scrub 1oz (sample)
Value: $16.25 (Full size is 2oz for $32.50)

Its slightly disappointing to get a microdermabrasion scrub when we got the one from dr. brandt last month. It would have been nice to have a nice hydrating moisturizer or eye cream this time around. However, this is a nice size sample and for that, I am grateful. This will definitely last a while.

This formula claims to buff away dull surface cells, diminsh the appearance of wrinkles and acne scares and absorbs excess skin oils with an exclusive crystal blend including the Dead Sea Salt and Volcanic Sand. It is enriched with Lime and Lemon Peel (which you can definitely smell. Very nice, clean citrusy scent) plus is hast antioxidants Grapeseed and Vitamin E. All derma e products are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, glycol-free, lanolin-free, gluten free and GMO free. Thats a lot of frees yo!

I took a look at the website and this looks like a brand I could definitely get into. Im excited to try this scrub!

Item: Eva NYC Therapy Session Hair Mask 2.03oz (smaller of two sizes available)
Value: $12

Which bring us to the  Therapy Session Hair Mask by Eva NYC. This hair mask smells really good, but it actually permeated through the entire bag. Every think in that bag smelled like this hair mask. The inside of the bag was overwhelmingly this smell. Its definitely potent. I swatched this on my hand, took a picture, rubbed it around, cleaned it off with a wet wipe, washed my hands SEVERAL times and the smell is still there on my hand. Im a tad scared to put it on my head just because of my migraines! I might have Bryan test it out for me. He cant smell anything so itll be perfect.

The hair mask claims to deeply condition, repairs and strengthens dry and damaged hair. Argan Oil nourishes and revitalizes, while Keravis Protein drastically increases hairs strength and elasticity. Pretty lofty claims! Im kind of excited to see how this works and if it smells that crazy actually ON your hair!

Total Value: $41.91
Overall: Definitely a good bag. I havent been disappointed yet! Now to go tell Bryan that hes going to be my guinea pig for that hair mask. Im sure thatll go over well!

Have you signed up for Ipsy yet? Go getchu some!

Physics May Help Macular Degeneration AMD

Physics May Help Macular Degeneration AMD

“What does physics have to do with help for macular degeneration patients?” asked Boston Ophthalmologist Francis D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D. “The application of optical physics might be helpful to patients with macular degeneration in regaining some functioning vision to overcome the visual distortion caused by AMD. While the key to maintaining eye health and vision as we age-especially regarding macular degeneration-is having regular eye exams, there are still a growing number of patients who experience a disturbing distortion and twisting of their vision resulting from macular degeneration,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr. of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Lancaster, Acton & Gardner.

Nobel Laureate Walter Kohn described a potential application of what is a dynamic “translator” for the particular distortion a patient experiences either in handheld computers or an optical corrective lens. “We routinely use the Amsler Grid, a graph-paper-like pattern to diagnose AMD-Dr. Kohn suggested that the Amsler grid could also be used to develop an optical correction,” said Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr.

When people with healthy eyes look at the Amsler Grid, they see its straight horizontal and vertical lines, with a dot at center.  Patients with AMD, however, often perceive a distortion about two or three centimeters in diameter in the center.

Amsler Grid

Dr. Kohn has initiated the development of software that lets an AMD patient, using a mouse, pull the virtual lines until he or she perceives the grid as “perfect,” yielding reversal of the specific distortion a person experiences. Dr. Kohn then uses these results to create a correction for that patient. In one experimental device, a handheld computer scans the printed page, using software to perform dynamic compensation, distorting the text to make it readable for patients. In addition, Dr. Kohn uses of a slab of optical material to fabricate the visual correction so that AMD patients could hold the optical slab of refractive material over text, pictures or reading material, just like the magnifying glass people use for seeing small type—only the surface of Kohn’s slab resembles ocean currents or waves that reverse the distortion.

“These are very exciting ideas and offer promise to help us deal with the visual distortion caused by macular degeneration,” offered Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr.

If you or someone you know is concerned about age related macular degeneration (AMD) risk or has any family history of age related macular degeneration they are encouraged to schedule an eye examination at D’Ambrosio Eye Care by calling us at 800-325-3937, visiting D’Ambrosio Eye Care or facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare so that we can help recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Whatever happened to the end of May and all of June

Whatever happened to the end of May and all of June

Oh yes.  Here it is.  In photos.

Inside playground.

Catching crawdads and playing with Suki dog at Whitneys birthday celebration.

Obsessed with playing in the dirt and sand with his dozers, trucks, tractors and diggers.

Meme and Papaw visit.

Tyler lets Uncle Josh near him - on purpose - but just because Uncle Josh was willing to be the engine on the tractor.

Lily helping Tyler up on the swing, pushing him and doing "under dog."

Picking (eating) strawberries at Whipkers.

Mama Fonner and sisters hit up Nashville.

Lily and I did the Girlfriend (bicycle) Ride together.  All 25k!  We start off with breakfast and a chocolate fountain.  Then headed off.  We got about 2 miles in and Lily wanted to know if it was almost over yet cause her butt hurt.  I called Joel and put him on standby to ready to come pick her up at mile 6 which was the first stop.

But then we got there and Lily saw all the spread of food - donuts, candy, cookies, gatorade, watermelon, chips, etc etc etc she suddenly felt strong enough to complete the whole event.  Thats my girl!  Nothing motivates quite like donuts and M&Ms.

While the girlies were at the bike ride, the boys went to the airport to see some cool planes and trucks.

Saturday morning donuts in the car after grocery shopping.  Their reward for not fighting over the shopping cart.

Lily gets a big girl bikini (in other words, one without cartoon characters on it).

Bronco rides.

Tantrums.  Each kid could have a whole post dedicated to their tantrums but just thinking about it makes me tired.  Instead, heres the aftermath of a tantrum thrown by Tyler.  I was out of town during this escapade, but I think Tyler didnt want to go potty or put on his pull up or something before nap time and threw a fit.  Joel gave up and locked him in his room.  He went back a little bit later and ol Tyler had passed out without pants on.  This is one for the senior year slide show!

These are pictures of "sick" Lily.  You cant really tell it, but she had puked on Joel when he dropped her off at daycare one morning (I was out of town).  So he had to turn around and go back home (and take a vacation day) to stay home with her.  She drew pictures.

 Lily and Tyler

Mama (arent I beautiful???)

Daddy

Joel asked her if that was his wiener hanging down between his legs.  Lily said, "No.  Its your poop.  Youre in the bathroom pooping."  Nice.  Real nice, Lily.

Lily ensuring that Tylers feet are squeaky clean.  Someone just needs to feed him grapes.

Lots of swimming in the back yard.

Wardrobe malfunctions...

We went to the potty.  A lot.  I do not understand Joels fascination with taking pictures of the kids while they are on the pot.  Hes an odd bird.

In addition to peeing on toilets, we took our turn peeing on trees.

This one of Lily happened during a GINORMOUS tantrum she was throwing while on a return bike ride from the playground.  She screamed the whole ride and was nearly left on the side of the rode about 3 times.  At this point in the trip, she had been screaming for 15 minutes that she had to potty (which was totally not true, but thats her "go to" phrase when she wants some attention).  So I finally pulled over and yanked her pants off and told her to potty on the tree cause there were no toilets around.  And Joel snapped a photo.

Here are some other pictures of family bike rides.  Not all end in horror.

Having a picnic at the playground.

The kids enjoyed swimming lessons for all of 2 out of 8 days.  The first 2 days were great.  They participated, they had fun.  Lily took care of her brother.

However after that, neither of them wanted to participate.  We kept right on trying through day 5 before we just gave the hell up.    Days 3, 4 and 5 were sheer misery.  M-I-S-E-R-Y.  They love to swim but apparently do not enjoy being told what to do when they are swimming.

What the?  What a grown up little MAN!  I think he was telling Joel that he looked like "Todd."  Todd is a fried of Joels and the kids are kind of obsessed with him.

Heres Tyler checking out chickens at Todds house.  And playing in the mud.

Airplane rides.

This is known as a gaggle of grand babies. Audrey is MIA in this photo - probably she was in hiding due to the extreme noise.

First swim of the season in Grams pool.

And that about does it for June.
