Eye test but no change
Matthew had an eye test this morning. This time it was my turn to look after Daniel, so I wheeled him around town for a while to stop him from causing chaos in the opticians and came back to find out the results. There isnt any major change in Matthews prescription since last time, although he will need a new pair of glasses because Daniel has bent his current Action Man pair. Hes chosen a smart pair of Spiderman frames this time.
Unfortunately Matthew is out of the habit of wearing his glasses since he went back to school, as his new teacher isnt used to making him wear them. Louise is going to speak to Matthews teacher to discuss it, as the optician has said that he does need to wear them for close-up work.

I knew it was inevitable but I still feel awful I ran over Hardy for the first time!
Hardy and I had another manners class today. We worked on stays, stands, coming into heel position, recalls, waiting at doors before coming through, coming into a nice front and some loose leash walking. Hardy was generally a good boy although we are are having trouble with him sitting straight next to or in front of me (and he still has that sprawled puppy sit) and with his stays if I try to go around behind him. I realized that I havent done that before since we have worked on stays with a tether (and I couldnt go around behind him). Hardy also chased something white that was being blown across the ring and was very distracted by the feather toy on the stick Mary was twirling around. The worst thing about class though, was that while we were making a turn, I ran over Hardys front foot. Its the first time its ever happened and although I knew it was inevitable, I was really hoping to avoid it and felt terrible about doing it! Hardy was less than amused and it took a couple minutes to reconnect and have him willing to work near the chair again. The good news is that it doesnt seem to have hurt him physically and Im sure we can rebuild his confidence - he is a resilient little guy! And well use chairs, walls and fences to work on him being straight next to me. Im not sure how to handle the sloppy puppy sit - Ive never had a puppy who sat like that before! Something else to learn!

Hardys a great young man but hes not Laurel!
Probably like with children, I shouldnt compare Hardy to Laurel but I do (and to be honest, although I tried not to compare our son, Devin, to his older sister, Kristen, occasionally I did that too). If Im going to do it, I should definitely compare Hardy to Laurel at the same age but I usually dont ... when I compare, I compare Hardy to Laurel now. Obviously, thats not fair since Hardy just turned 1 year old on Sunday and Laurel will be 5 at the beginning of June. Additionally, I was working much harder with Laurel at this age while I have had the luxury to focus on Hardys socialization and basic living skills while enjoying his puppy-hood and adolescence. As my first attempt to raise and train a service dog, poor Laurel was subjected to unnecessary pressure caused by my stress-level because it was so important she make it as my public access service dog,especially once she showed her natural abilities to alert to my medical problems.
Just as we found that raising children was much more difficult (as well as wonderful) than we had expected, we realized that was true for raising a puppy service dog candidate as well. Additionally, family members who had been completely supportive of the "service dog idea" werent prepared for the intrusion and bother that being involved with our puppy/SDiT presented for them. Certainly with a puppy and through at least the first part of the service dog in training period, it is hard work without the benefits of having the dog do task(s) to mitigate your disability. I realize that I could not do that without the help of my husband and even with that, since I only have so much energy and physical ability in a given day, working with the puppy or young dog takes precedence over other things I might like to do.
I certainly believe that my service dogs will be learning new things their entire lives (as I hope I will be too) but there is a point when going out in public together becomes much easier and the help the dog provides outweighs to effort involved. Because of our years training together, that is where Laurel and I are at; Hardy and I are not there yet. However, because Hardy has such a lovely, stable temperament, all the things that we dont have yet are those that I can train. And because of that temperament, being out in public is easier for him than it is for Laurel. However, she knows and understands what I am doing and what I need; things which Hardy doesnt yet get. Hence, I have decided that I will continue public access training and work on task training with Hardy - meaning that I will generally take him out with me (understanding that he cannot yet do what Laurel does). This means Ill be leaving Laurel home on those occasions but will ask her to help me there and when we are out doing dog-related things (classes, trials etc). Because my two Labs have gotten so good at taking turns, I am confident this will work nicely for all of us!

You may have noticed in the last few days that Im making a real effort here to get back to blogging. I took two solid months off - not on purpose really. It just sort of happened. Weve had such a busy summer with work and family travel - and been making the most of the weekends even when we are in town. My job has been so busy that some days I realize Ive had to pee for like 3 hours before I make time to go. Then throw in waking up at 4:30 every day to exercise and being wiped by 8pm. And youve got sitting on the awesome patio (dubbed our vacation home) with a good book taking priority over sitting in front of the computer blogging during my 45 minutes of free time per day (you know those few moments after the kids go to sleep where you muster up the last bit of energy from your reserves to do SOMETHING for yourself - even though all you really want to do is pass out).
Anyway - considering all that - it becomes pretty clear how 3+ months can just vanish before your eyes. But then I start to feel guilty and I think about those blog books and how much I think the kids will enjoy them when they grow up. And how accomplished I feel when I put a post out there. Its a hobby that has a real, tangible outcome. Progress you can see. I like those kinds of hobbies.
So, Ill try to catch up on all thats gone on this summer over the next several posts. Probably most of the stories will be abbreviated either because Ive already forgotten the details or because Im just not patient enough to document it all in favor of just catching up as fast as possible.
Here goes.
Fourth of July celebrations: Sparklers and smores in the backyard. Fireworks in the front yard.
Then we went to see the Columbus fireworks. We drove up toward the airport where they were going off and parked on the side of the road. It was a cool night for being the Fourth of July and all.
Then more sparklers fun at Grams house.
No nap Tyler = passed out sideways on the couch from pure exhaustion.

July also brought out boat trip with the Basham Clan to Dale Hollow. What a blast we had this year. The kiddos had a grand time swimming and sliding like crazy. Since the trip, Tylers asked no less than 13 times when were going to go on a boat trip again. A boat WITH A SLIDE, Mommy.
The road trip on the way to the lake was pretty typical...you know the kids wanting to eat approximately every 7 minutes. But we made it there and had time to spare so went in to town to grab some lunch. Lily was tired - she didnt sleep on the way down - and she was crabby as all get out. What ensued at the Dairy Queen in Celina, TN has to be the single most horrifyingly embarrassing experience Ive had as a mother to date. You would not believe it from this innocent face,
but this child threw the tantrum of a lifetime in DQ. At one point, this girl was standing in the middle of the store with her underwear and one piece jumper around her ankles screaming that she had to pee (yet she would not go....). Judgement was being rained down on me from another mother in the restaurant. Her two early teens children were patiently waiting to use the one stall bathroom and with Lily standing naked in the doorway, they couldnt use it. What a nightmare. I was ready to tell that woman that if she had any ideas, Id gladly let her take over the situation. 45 minutes later we get out of there. Sigh. It was awesome.
Anyway, once finally on the boat, things looked up. Mostly. Until Lily got stung by a wasp and Tyler got a splinter the size of a small twig in his foot. But after THAT, things were great.
Daredevil Tyler took to the slide immediately and went down it over and over and over. It took Lily a good long time to get brave. Well and I may have tricked her once in to going down alone - she thought I was going with her but at the last second I sent her down by herself. She did not speak to me for a while. Kjestine finally got her snapped out of it and convinced she could go by herself.
Joel told me to photoshop in a fish....I forgot....
Cant have a boat trip without at least one person melting down in their underwear. At least it wasnt me.
And baths are taken in the lake. Tyler was cool with it. Lily, not so much.
I drove that 75 foot boat both on the way out and the way back to the marina. I got pretty good at it by the time all was said and done.

Waiting for the ice cream truck. I dont remember what was so loud that Tyler had to cover his ears. It was not the ice cream truck though. What is amazing is that you can ask Lily 47 times to go brush her teeth or put on her shoes or whatever and she doesnt hear you until youre in her face and yelling. But the ice cream truck, she can hear that thing like a full 10 minutes before anyone else can hear it coming. Incredible.

Out to dinner at Texas Roadhouse with Joels parents for his birthday . I guess he didnt want to sit on the saddle and have the whole restaurant sing Happy Birthday. (I was not there - was in Seattle...)
