Eye test but no change

Eye test but no change

Matthew had an eye test this morning.  This time it was my turn to look after Daniel, so I wheeled him around town for a while to stop him from causing chaos in the opticians and came back to find out the results.  There isnt any major change in Matthews prescription since last time, although he will need a new pair of glasses because Daniel has bent his current Action Man pair.  Hes chosen a smart pair of Spiderman frames this time.

Unfortunately Matthew is out of the habit of wearing his glasses since he went back to school, as his new teacher isnt used to making him wear them.  Louise is going to speak to Matthews teacher to discuss it, as the optician has said that he does need to wear them for close-up work.

Hardy passed his Canine Good Citizen test today!

Hardy passed his Canine Good Citizen test today!

Brent, Hardy and I drove out to Tall Pines Dog Training in Middlefield, OH, today so that we could take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test! It was a beautiful day for the drive and we arrived a couple minutes early. The floor of the training building is wood chips on dirt so thats different from anything weve experienced before. Hardy did a super job with the test and we were very proud of him! We were very pleased that he passed ... Hardy wonders why we ever doubted! Good boy, Hardy! Now we have two Canine Good Citizens at our house!

Eye Exam Retinoscopy Test What is It

Eye Exam Retinoscopy Test What is It

At your D’Ambrosio Eye Care eye exam you will probably have a test called Retinoscopy. Retinoscopy is a technique to measure the refractive error of the eye. Your eye doctor will use a retinoscope to shine a light into the back of the eye and observe the reflection of light off the retina.  While moving the light, lenses of different powers are placed in front of the eye until the refection of light in neutralized.  The combination of lenses required to neutralize the reflection of light is used to calculate an estimate of the patients prescription for eyeglasses.

Retinoscopy has a number of uses.  Your doctor can use retinoscopy as a starting point when determining the final prescription for glasses.  In some patients, such as young children or people with severe mental disabilities, retinoscopy may be the only reliable method of determining a spectacle prescription.  Observing the appearance of the reflection of light when performing retinoscopy can help an eye doctor confirm certain ocular conditions such as cataracts or keratoconus.  It can also be used to help determine the accommodative, or focusing, ability of the patient.

Glaucoma Specialist on Tonometry Eye Pressure Test

Glaucoma Specialist on Tonometry Eye Pressure Test

“The tonometry eye pressure test is one of the tests performed during a comprehensive eye exam,”commented Glaucoma Specialist Bin Wu, M.D. of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Acton, Gardner and Lancaster. Tonometry measures the intraocular pressure, or pressure inside the eye.  There are several different ways to perform this test.

Goldman applanation tonometry is the "gold standard."  Your eye doctor will instill a numbing drop in the eye, along with fluorescein, an orange dye.  A blue light is used to enhance visibility of the front surface of the eye.  A sensor is then used to take a pressure reading off the cornea.

Air puff noncontact tonometry is another way to measure the intraocular pressure without the need for numbing drops or dyes.  A puff of air is blown onto the cornea and the internal pressure of the eye is calculated based on the reaction of the cornea to the puff of air.  This method is not as consistent as Goldman applanation tonometry, but it is quick and easy to do.

Intraocular pressure that is too high or too low can cause problems in the eye.  High intraocular pressure is a risk factor for glaucoma.  The optic nerve is sensitive to elevated pressure in the eye and glaucoma can result in optic nerve damage and vision loss. Pressure that is too low can cause also cause optic nerve problems as well as retinal problems.

Regular eye exams are important to make monitor your intraocular pressure.  Intraocular pressure that is elevated usually cannot be felt, and vision loss from glaucoma is permanent.
