One Large Bubble Please

One Large Bubble Please

You know I met Bryan when we were really young... right? Throughout the past fourteen-ish years that Ive been in his life, Ive heard the stories of him and his cousins getting hurt.

While building a tree house, Bryan had a 2x4 dropped on his head, which resulted in a lot of blood loss and quite a few staples.

He and his cousins set a doghouse (and then the real house) on fire... I guess they didnt really get hurt but COME ON.

Nurses asked Bryans cousin Joey if there was abuse at home because he was often getting hurt. (Joey is particularly accident prone, much to his parents horror.)

These are just three examples. They is PLENTY more. Its no secret that the Vickers boys get hurt. All the time. And you know what?

I HAVE A VICKERS BOY.

The kid wont stop getting injured. Its absolute insanity. Im on pins and needles waiting for the next phone call or video chat where I see my kid banged up in some way or another.

SO FAR - After Shepherds first birthday party, a propped up table slid and pinned him to the ground. He had a scrap on his head but otherwise, was okay.

He got a random cut at my mother in laws house, one that he didnt even cry over. We didnt notice it until much later and when we asked him what happened he just looked at us blankly. It wasnt horrible, but it wasnt a little scrape either!

Bryan was building my library (youll see it soon enough!) and Shepherd walked RIGHT INTO a corner.

He falls down constantly. He runs everywhere he goes but his running is still that toddler, not quite stable type of run... so he trips and falls constantly. Instead of looking where he is going, he will look at whatever toy is in his hand and will just trip on whatever toy, book, rug, pillow, stuffed animal, etc that is on the floor and hell go flying.

Well, thats kind of what happened a few weeks ago.

Shep was walking around with a toy and he tripped over something and fell face (eye) first into a metal cupboard organizer. Here is his eye an hour after it happened...

And then his eye a few days later...

Thankfully nothing happened to his actual eye and it healed up really quickly. You can barely see the shadow of the bruise in the photo I posted a few days ago. I wish I could just put him in a bubble so that he could roam and explore without getting hurt. All of these happened in between April and October. I know its only going to get worse as he learns to really run and ride a bike, skateboard, rollerblades and play sports. Oh man. This is only the beginning. Ultimately, hes just got to learn to slow down and think things through on his own. Until then, I guess Ill just have to keep the snuggles and band-aids readily available.

Being a boy is tough. Being the mom of a boy is worse. Being the mom of a Vickers boy is downright frightful!

Hes totally worth all those extra gray hairs. ;)

A Million and One Catch Up Moments for Lily

A Million and One Catch Up Moments for Lily

Im behind, behind, behind.  Gasp!

Couple of big things have happened with Lily in the last month.

First, we registered Lily for Kindergarten!  That was stressful!  Not the actual registration part, but the figuring out all the rest part.  Like before school care.  After school care.  Should we enroll her in the school thats meant for our neighborhood or the school thats actually a tad closer and ranked higher?  But if we do that, what kind of options will we have for before/after school care...  A million and one questions to figure out.  But we did get it figured out.  Whew.

Second, Lilys teacher recently rearranged their class room and Lilys desk was moved further away from the whiteboard.  When that happened Lilys teacher noticed that she was squinting when trying to read words on the board.  When she asked Lily to read a word (it was color words which Lily knows how to read), Lily said she couldnt.  So, off to the eye doctor we went.

Lily did great while there.  Did everything that was asked of her.  Didnt shy away in to herself.  She  even handled it great when I left the room for my own appointment.  The only thing that gave her any pause at all was when the doctor put the drops in her eyes to dilate them.  She didnt much care for that.

The doctor said that her vision is slightly impaired but mostly whats causing the squinting is an astigmatism.  She got a prescription for glasses which the doctor said she didnt have to wear all the time if she didnt want to.  She suggested that we just have Lily leave them at school so she always had them when she needed them to see the whiteboard.  So thats what weve been doing.  But Lily really likes to wear them.  (Shes very proud of her pink case.)

Third, we signed Lily up for soccer!  Shes had two practices and one game so far.  She seems to like it ok though I am already worried about her willingly sticking it out the whole six game season.

During her first game, she really started to lose interest about half way through.  They play four 10-minute quarters and that just seems too long.  Almost all of the kids were over it before all was said and done.  I have no idea what the score was of her first game, but Lilys team, The Snappers, definitely did not win.   I cant believe I didnt get a picture of Lily before the game.  She looked sooooo stinkin cute.

Lily had two assists!  She should have had two goals, but she has trouble with following the ball after she kicks it.  Both times, she launched the ball at the goal and both times it rolled to a stop practically on the goal line and she just watched it happen.  Both times, one of her teammates ran up and kicked it in.    She played the "goalie" position for one quarter.  She did ok, but she struggled to pay attention the whole time.

After the last practice, prior to her first game, Joel noticed Lily might be losing interest a little, so he promised her if she worked hard at her first game, he would take her for ice cream afterwards.  Bribery at its finest!  (Also, Tyler is SUCH A STINKER.)

And lastly, I did this interview with Lily around her birthday, but I just never got around to posting it.  I thought it would be fun to try to do these same questions every year.  I imagine I may add questions over time, but for now these seemed age appropriate.

One Month Old

One Month Old

I cant believe this little man has been with us for one whole month! We have been so blessed by his sweet spirit and dont know what we would do without him! It has gone by so fast! It seriously still all feels like it was yesterday! I think about our birth experience almost everyday and is it weird that I miss it? I am sad it is over!
Wrekker is getting a little bit bigger! I am not sure what he weighs exactly yet, but we will be going in to get him weighed to make sure he is getting enough to eat.
His eyes are starting to have the slightest blue color to them. The dr. told us when he was born his eyes were so dark because babies dont gain color in them for the first 6 months. They are still very dark but I think blue will be the color.
His hair hasnt fallen out... Whew! It is so beautiful I would just cry if he lost it! I hope it continues to grow and stay, to be honest, he almost should get a haircuts to get rid of the rat tail thing he has going in the back!
He is such a better eater. Breastfeeding has been a struggle, but he is doing so good and we only supplement about an ounce of formula maybe twice a day after feedings so I am hopeful he is starting to get all he needs.
He is very alert when he is awake. I love the mornings after we wake up because he will just lay with me and look around. He loves to listen to Kason and I read him stories and he is pretty content to just lay on you and cuddle.
He loves to be held. He wont always cry if youre not holding him, but he just loves to be close to you. I dont think he is spoiled just yet, but it is sweet that he wants to be wrapped up in mine or dads arms so we let him.
He sleeps 4-5 hours between feedings at night. Sometimes I have a hard time getting him back to sleep but lately it has been really, really good!
He doesnt wear newborn diapers anymore. Not necessarily because he doesnt fit ha ha but because we ran out and have a million size 1s that we need to use.
He spits up A LOT. I will be sure to bring this up at our next check up but he has lots and lots and LOTS of gas, and we go through lots of spit up rags.
He loves to take baths. Sometimes he will get in with me and then Kason will help get him out and dressed. Or usually I just bathe him everyday (because of the spit up smell) and he just lays there loving the warm water.
He giggles in his sleep. I wish he knew he was doing it so I could know why or what makes him. He hasnt smiled or giggled awake, but he does it almost daily in his sleep! I wonder what he dreams about?!
He loves to ride in the car. He HATES to get in his seat, and will usually cry the first few mins of any car ride.. Which has made for some tough commutes to Bunkerville and back, but once he realizes he is in there and we are moving he goes right to sleep!
He loves to sleep next to me every single morning after Kason leaves for work. Its like he is already smart enough to know. I have tried and tried to get him back to sleep after that last early morning feeding and he refuses, unless I lay him in my arms, then we will both sleep for 3 more hours guaranteed. Crazy boy!
November was full of so many exciting new moments as we were learning our new life with our sweet baby Wrekker. He is so sweet and such a blessing to our home. It is hard to believe that just days ago he was in Heaven. We had lots of visitors and seldom stopped staring at our handsome boy.
We took Grandma Kelli some balloons and to breakfast on her birthday.
Wrekker also celebrated his first Thanksgiving(s). He is healthy and growing each and every day!

One Year Anniversary!

One Year Anniversary!

I cant believe that we have been married a whole year today! Where has the time gone! I am so blessed to have Kason as my wonderful husband and feel so much more love for him each and every day! This has been the most amazing year! We have had nothing but laughs! We truly have so much fun together and he is the sweetest man! We spent the weekend being so excited that we had been married a whole year! Saturday we went to the Temple at the exact same time our sealing was last year on this Saturday as we were sealed together and it was so special to be there on this special day. We did sealings again and it was such a neat and wonderful experience to remember those words that were spoke to us a year ago. I am truly the luckiest girl in the world! I cant wait for all of the other adventures that await us and we continue our journey to forever! :)

This Food Has 1 000 More Nutrients Than Broccoli Yet No One Ever Thinks to Eat It

This Food Has 1 000 More Nutrients Than Broccoli Yet No One Ever Thinks to Eat It

This Food Has 1,000% More Nutrients Than Broccoli, Yet No One Ever Thinks to Eat It

This article is shared with permission from our friends at thetruthaboutcancer.com.

What’s so special about broccoli sprouts? According to various researchers (including Johns Hopkins and Ohio State University), they contain 1,000 percent more nutrients than mature broccoli!

  • Sulforaphane, the prominent phytochemical in broccoli, combats cancer on several fronts ? including removal of carcinogens, prevention of cancer cell production, destruction of breast cancer cells, and tumor reduction. These small plants are in the cancer research limelight for their unique ability to exert 50 times the amount of cancer fighting power of broccoli.

Sprouts are easily absorbed into the system because they also contain potent digestive enzymes. Their flavor allows for easily adding them to all your favorite meals. Broccoli sprouts are also easy to grow and will keep for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
7 Easy Steps for Growing Broccoli Sprouts

Step #1: Start with three tablespoons organic, high germination broccoli seeds for sprouting. (Click on the Sources & References link below the article for a few online sources for seeds). Prep the 3 tablespoons of seeds by rinsing them thoroughly in a tightly woven stainless steel or plastic strainer while removing any debris and non-seed material.
Step #2: Place the rinsed seeds in a quart sized, pre-sterilized, glass jar (a mason canning jar that’s been rinsed with boiling water and cooled is a good choice). Fill the jar with approximately ¾ cup or more of spring or purified water. The quantity of water is not crucial as the seeds will only absorb the amount necessary for sprouting.

  • Push down any floating seeds with your finger as broccoli seeds tend to float at first. Place the jar in an easy to notice place (such as the kitchen counter near the sink, which is where I keep mine) for eight hours.
Step #3: Drain-Rinse-Drain again. In this step you skim off any floating bits and then drain them through the strainer, or place a plastic screen or piece of cheesecloth in the mason jar lid and drain water out this way. (If using an ordinary quart jar take the cheesecloth or plastic screen and secure it with a heavy rubber band around the mouth of the jar). It is important to keep seeds rinsed, but not soaking in water from this point on or they will rot.
Invert the container for ten minutes or so at approximately 45 degrees on a dish rack or other holder to ensure the sprouts are free from

excess water. Then set them in a well-ventilated area where they will be noticed during the day so you remember to rinse and drain them every 8 hours.
You can add water through the screen without removing the lid to make it easier. Then shake the seeds down and lay the jar on its side until it’s time to rinse again. Repeat this process for three days or until you see two leaves emerge.

Step #4: Place them in indirect or partial sunlight to let them get greener. After another day or two of rinsing and draining, they are ready to store in the refrigerator.

Step #5: Remove the hulls of the seeds by placing the sprouts in a bowl or other large container of clean water. Gently pull the sprout mass apart and allow the seed hulls to float to the top. Skim the top, rinse the sprouts again and return them to their jar with the screen on top. Invert the jar to allow all the water to drain off and allow to dry sufficiently (approximately 8 hours).

Step #6: Place the broccoli sprouts in the refrigerator in a covered jar or other suitable container for later use in salads, sandwiches, or to eat alone as a snack.
Step #7: Enjoy! There are many ways to use this nutrient dense food. However, to fully benefit from all the nutritional properties of these sprouts it is best to consume them in their natural raw (uncooked) state.

Without people like you who truly care about helping others, we wouldn’t matter. Please share this cancer-fighting information with friends and loved ones.
