The best years
The best years
I know that were supposed to cherish these years with our kids. I hear, all the time, parents whos kids are 10+ years old say, "My favorite years with my kids was when they were 3 to 5 years old."
When I hear them say that, I almost fall apart.
From weariness. From frustration. From helplessness. From exasperation. From feeling out of control. From guilt for feeling all those other things I feel!
From FREAKING OUT that these are the BEST years!? Are you kidding me??? It gets worse???
Joel and I were discussing the other night that we are pretty sure we only get about 2 nights a week that are drama free.
1) Lily is in pre-K now and they dont take naps. Well Lilys not really ready to give up nap. She needs about 45 minutes of rest per day and now that shes not getting it, our evenings can be miserable. Its like weve fast-fowarded 10 years and I have a hormonal teenage girl in my house who either cries at EVERYTHING or is so moody with an attitude you want to smack her in to next week.
2) Tyler never really had terrible twos to speak of - at least not like Lily did. Nah, he decided to save up until he was 3. That kid can get set off by the wind blowing the wrong way and suddenly hes the Incredible Hulk complete with fists of rage and bulging eyeballs. He has no problem screaming for an hour. His favorite, go-to move, though, is spitting when he is displeased with something you said or did to him.
One night last week we hit the double bonus and both kids turned on their crazy at the same time. Joel and I take turns with each kid reading the bedtime story. Problem is, if Lily has her choice, shed rather I read to her. Most of the time, shes ok with Joel but sometimes she doesnt want him at all. Tyler on the other hand NEVER wants me. So its guaranteed that 3 to 4 nights per week will suck because Tyler will fight with me about reading him a story. Sometimes, he concedes after a few minutes but other times he holds out for an hour.
Which is what happened in this latest episode. They each were being stubborn about who they wanted to read to them and Joel and I were NOT giving in. Tyler ended up getting locked in his room and wound up screaming and crying for an hour until he finally just wore himself out, conking out mid-holler. Literally. Lily pulled her bi-polar routine for about 75 minutes. "I want a hug and kiss." (Shrug away and grunt when you try.) "I SAID GIVE ME A HUG AND KISS!!" (Another shrug away when you try again.)
Somehow, neither Joel nor I completely lost our sh*t - but let me tell you, its nights like those that give me insight to those news stories you see where parents have caused serious injury to their kid by shaking them.
3) We are sick of being short order cooks. Done. Joel decided about month ago, that after Tylers birthday, we were going to stop fixing them something different than what we eat. So we are working our way in to this process. We have stopped offering the kids pepperonis or PB&J crackers for supper. We are putting at least one teensy bite of whatever we are having on their plate and then we round out their meal with other things we know they like (peas, green beans, fruit, yogurt, etc). We are trying to put those things on our plates too so that it doesnt look like something "special" for them. They cant get a treat unless they at least TRY everything on their plate. They get two treats if they eat all the important things (think: veggies & protein). The treats are not a big thing...just two little pieces of chocolate or something similar.
Tylers been playing along relatively well. He has at least tasted nearly every single thing we put in front of him. He wants his chocolate. Thats my kid, alright.
Lily on the other hand. Stubborn, stubborn, stubborn. "I dont like that." "Im NOT eating that." "I WILL spit it out." When we tell her shes not getting a treat she says, "I AM getting a treat if I want one and Im NOT eating that fill in the blank."
But we stick to our guns and dont give her one. Cue meltdown. For an hour. And then its bed time. GOD FORBID it be Joels night to read that child a story!
(I typed this up about a week ago and never hit publish. Tonight at dinner, Lily tried her food and Tyler threw the fit. Sigh. At least the good news is we ARE making progress. One fit at a time I suppose.)
Other random events of the past couple weeks...
Tyler put on his shades one morning on the way to school. I tried to take his picture and he put his hand up and exclaimed, "Blocked ya!"
Smores and camping, part two. The smores went over well - the camping, not so much. Tyler threw a fit and didnt want to settle down. Finally did settle down only to wake up about 90 minutes later screaming his head off. Joel brought him inside (I was sleeping inside this time and he had outside duty). An hour or so later, Lily woke up fussing. Meanwhile, Joel didnt get back to sleep in between kid awakening episodes. When they emerged the next morning, Joel came in all stuffed up and sick. So, camping was a hit!
We went to a car show downtown last weekend. We got there and this conversation happened:
Lily: "What are we going to do here?"
Joel: "Walk around and look at cars."
Lily: "Look at cars? Thats it? Thats BORING!"
I snorted. I hear ya sister. So instead we went to the commons playground while the Joel walked around and looked at boring cars.
Tyler kept jumping off this ledge. About 3 feet up. Hes such a boy!
Lily riding her bike. I dont know why, but we havent ridden bikes much at all this summer. In spite of that, she has improved a great deal on controlling her speed and getting her momentum going again if she stops on a slight incline.
I had to travel to Minnesota for a day this week and I got this pic of my cute family enjoying ice cream cones in my absence (Daddy says they ate all their food including trying the new things...hmmm).
While I was gone, the kids finger painted the windows that are at the very top of our front door. Its always bothered Joel cause "people can see right in" our living. Im like, what people? Are there a bunch of 6.5 tall people wandering our our neighborhood looking in high windows? Cause you have to be that tall to see in them. Anyway, cool idea that Joel had. Looks cool.
My boy, who rarely lets me hold him, was hanging on for a piggy back ride this week and posed all super cute. I can forgive him a lot of transgressions during those moments.
The kids are so curious about what Joels work and my work looks like on the inside. Theyve both been in my building before (though its been a long time) but they had never seen inside "Daddys work." Joel picked them up from daycare one day this week and ran them inside for a look around. They were STOKED to get their very own safety glasses and ear plugs. Mommys work is SO NOT that cool.

This kid falls asleep at least one per weekend in the car. I wish I could fall asleep so easily!

Home Remedy for Piles Treatment
Home Remedy for Piles Treatment
A large number of people suffer from piles or hemorrhoids. Piles are mainly a condition that results due to the swelling of veins in and around the rectum. There are two types of piles; internal piles - where the swelling is located inside the anal passage and can be felt rather than seen and external piles - where the swelling is easily visible because they are located just outside the anus. Internal piles cause the discharge of dark colored blood whereas external piles are extremely painful with little or no blood discharge. Constipation or forcing out stools could lead to the rupture of the veins and this results in bleeding piles. This will cause internal bleeding or external bleeding, depending on the location of the rupture.
There is an abundance of information on piles and hemorrhoids on the internet because of the high incidence of the condition, but despite this there is a lot of confusion about that subject. This is because most individuals are embarrassed or awkward about discussing some health problems and consider them to be of a personal nature. Very often otherwise health conscious individuals even defer going to a doctor or seeking medical treatment simply out of fear or anxiety of social discomfort. The fact is that piles problems are exceedingly common and if treated effectively can be cured permanently. Piles is not a disease, but is a condition that could be caused by some underlying infection, but there is no such thing as a piles infection. In most cases piles is simply caused due to bad eating habits, with diets that are deficient in essential fiber, while being extremely rich in fat.
Piles symptoms, cures and treatment are connected and it is important to identify the cause of the piles for a lasting piles cure. Piles may be caused by a variety of factors apart from the most common diet causes. The direct cause being the exertion of excessive pressure on veins in the anal region causing them to get inflamed. Obesity can contribute to the development of piles and severely aggravate the problem because of increased pressure. For the same reason piles symptoms in pregnancy are not uncommon and the condition usually resolves naturally post delivery. In such scenarios simple home remedies for piles can offer a great deal of relief. Typically these would include diet remedies and modifications to your lifestyle. While there are piles remedies for quick relief it is absolutely necessary to make changes to your lifestyle and diet for a lasting cure to the condition. Failing this piles will simply keep recurring and worsen over time. In cases where piles have been caused by some underlying condition such as bowel cancer then treatment would need to address that underlying condition to cure piles.
This is one condition where home treatment is preferable as natural home remedies for piles are not just effective, but also a lot safer. Constipation is not just a contributing factor to piles, but it can make the passage of stools excruciating when suffering from piles. In such situations it may be necessary to take laxatives or seek medical help. Keep in mind however that frequent usage of laxatives can be dangerous as it may create a dependence, with lazy colon syndrome, where the bowels cannot be evacuated without consumption of a laxative. Natural laxatives like dates are therefore a much better idea. Curing piles or successfully passing stools is however not the end of the problem and it is important to make changes to your diet, including more fiber rich foods and water to prevent the problem from recurring.
Piles Home Remedies
The Use of Dry Figs in the Treatment of Piles
Use hot water to clean three or four figs and then soak them overnight. Eat the figs next morning and drink the water in which they were soaked. It is beneficial if you eat the figs in the evening as well. This effective piles home remedy must be repeated for at least three to four weeks. The figs contain tiny seeds that stimulate the peristaltic movement in the intestines. This causes a bowel movement thus keeping the alimentary canal clean. This is one of the most effective home remedies for piles as it alleviates the pressure on the anal region and the hemorrhoids begin to contract. Therefore in order to get rid of piles, constipation must be avoided at all costs.
The Use of Mango Seeds to Treat Piles Disease
Mango seeds seem to be an effective cure for piles. The seeds must be properly dried, powdered and stored in a clean, dry place. One or two teaspoons of this powder must be consumed two times a day. You can use this natural piles treatment at home to reduce the swelling and inflammation which will consequently reduce your pain and discomfort.
The Use of Java Plum or Rose Apple in the Treatment of Piles
Another effective piles home remedy is the Java Plum also known as Rose Apple. This fruit must be consumed every morning for a period of two to three months. Consumption of this fruit is known to be an effective cure for bleeding piles.
The Use of Radish in the Treatment of Piles
White radish helps alleviate the symptoms of piles. Consume a mixture of 100 mg of grated white radish and a teaspoon of honey, or drink the juice of this vegetable twice a day, about 60 to 90 ml. This piles home remedy can be used as an external medication as well. Make a paste of white radish mixed with milk and apply it on the affected area to experience relief from the swelling and the pain.
Piles Treatment Using Turnip
The leaves of turnip have been found useful in this disease. The juice of these leaves should be extracted and 150 ml given to the patient. It is, however, necessary to take a proper diet of raw fruits and vegetables while taking this juice. For better results, 50 ml of the juice should be mixed with equal quantities of juices of watercress, spinach, and carrots.
Piles Treatment Using Bitter Gourd
The juice of the fresh leaves of bitter gourd is also valuable in piles. Three teaspoons of the leaf juice, mixed with a glass of buttermilk, should be taken every morning for treating this condition. A paste of the roots of the bitter gourd plant can also be applied over piles with beneficial results.
Piles Treatment Using Ginger
Ginger is also useful in this disease. Half a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice, mixed with one teaspoon each of fresh lime juice and fresh mint juice, and a tablespoon of honey, constitutes an effective medicine for piles.
Piles Treatment Using Onion
Onions are valuable in bleeding piles. About thirty grams of this vegetable should be finely rubbed in water and sixty grams of sugar added to it. It should be taken twice daily by the Patient. It will bring relief within a few days. Onion is also useful in the treatment of dry piles. A crushed onion, skinned and roasted in aches, may be applied with beneficial results.
Piles Treatment Using Wheat Grass
Wheat grass juice used as an enema helps detoxify the walls of the piles. The general procedure is to give an enema with lukewarm or margosa water. After waiting for twenty minutes, 90 to 120 ml of the wheat grass juice enema is given. This should be retained for fifteen minutes.
Piles treatment using Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds are also valuable in piles. They can be taken in the form of a decoction by boiling twenty grams of seeds in 500 ml of water till it is reduced by one-third, or as sweetmeats. Ground to paste with water, they can be given with butter for bleeding piles.
Piles treatment using Chebulic Myroblan
The herb chebulic myroblan is a popular remedy for piles. It is very effective as a laxative and is highly astringent. The fruit should be roasted to a brown colour in cluster oil, and then powdered and stored. Half a teaspoon of this powder at bedtime will bring about normal bowel movements in the morning, and the astringent property of the fruit will heal masses. A decoction of the herb prepared by boiling six 10 seven dry fruits in half a litre of water should be used for washing bleeding piles. The paste of the fruit mixed in a bland oil is good as an external application.
Piles Diet
Fruit Diet
The treatment of the basic cause, namely, chronic constipation, is the only way to get rid of the trouble. To begin with, the entire digestive tract must be given a complete rest for a few days and the intestines thoroughly cleansed. For this purpose, the patient should adopt an all-fruit diet for, at least, seven days. Thereafter he may adopt a diet of natural foods aimed at securing soft stools.
Other Piles Treatment
Exercise
A topical piles cream/ointment along with dietary changes is generally effective in treating piles. In severe cases, however, surgery for the removal of piles may be necessary. It is important to understand what causes piles so that you can prevent a recurrence of the problem. Exercise is important and useful for everybody but more so for those suffering from piles. Exercising causes the abdominal muscles to flex and will also increase and improve circulation in the rectal region thereby providing relief from constipation and congestion. A sedentary lifestyle with little or no activity might aggravate the condition. Therefore, exercising is a sure shot technique in the treatment of piles.

Week 7
Week 7
Week 7:
- Baby is the size of a blueberry.
- Spring Break has begun! Woohoo!
- Mommy has only thrown up a few times, but she is nauseous quite often. Mostly at night.
- Lost 2 more pounds! That makes 5 total! I might as well be excited now, because its obviously not going to continue for much longer!
- Trying to eat as healthy as I can, but lately I cant even say the word...eek or type it... "vegetables". However, I am trying my best!
- I am not sleeping very well! WHY? It isnt like I am uncomfortable! I wake up around 2 or 3 every morning and just lay there and my body will not fall back asleep!
- We are starting to get so excited! I already have a huge list of things I have researched and want to buy. Now, to convince daddy!
- Daddy predicts that you are a girl, but desperately... DESPERATELY wants you to be a boy! He said he had a few dreams about me being pregnant with a girl before we even found out. Like the week and a few days before. He really wants our oldest child to be a boy though. Of course he will love you either way!
- Mommy predicts that you are a girl. I even ordered a few hair bows.... bahahahah dont make fun of me! I kept waiting at the checkout to get this overwhelming feeling that I shouldnt buy it... but it never came, not even the slightest feeling, and so I bought them!
- My mom, is SO excited! She has already made 5 or 6 burp rags and who knows what else she has going in that cute mind of hers!
- I love, love, LOVE riding my bike! We got it a few weeks ago and it is the best exercise! I rode over 50 miles this week. One day I did 15, and the rest were an average of 8-10. But I did it each day this week and it is such a wonderful relaxation for me!
- Favorite moment of the week: going for a ride with Kason on his motorcycle. I was sick pretty much all week from like 3pm-8pm and so it was such a great way to get some fresh air!

Canine Eye Problems
Canine Eye Problems
Canine eye problems are an hindrance to dogs health, which cause severe suffering. Eyes, are one of the most delicate body parts of humans, as well as, animals. Improper or neglected care and cleaning of eyes have all kinds of eye problems as possible repercussions. For example, your pets may at any time, encounter dust or dirt which may enter their eyes and cause eye problems like eye infections. The following information will let you know about different canine eye problems which are more common than other canine diseases.
Common Eye Disorders or Problems In Canines
Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)
Several factors such as allergens (pollens, grasses, etc), infections caused by virus, bacteria or fungi may cause inflammation of the conjunctiva. This condition is referred to as conjunctivitis or pink eye; one of the most common canine eye problems. Symptoms to watch out for would be, as the name suggests, a prominent pinkish color of the dogs eye area or lets say, a meaty; appearance of the dogs conjunctiva. The dog will find it difficult to open its eye fully, due to the heavy discharge which gets collected around the eye area. This also makes the dog uncomfortable when it tries to blink. You may find your pet scratching its eye in order to reduce the itching caused due to the infection. The animal also becomes sensitive to bright light and so, could be seen spending time in dark corners of the house.
Cataracts
Canine eye problems such as cataracts (disease that involves the clouding or opacification of the natural lens of the eye) are considered to be an inherited disease. The development of cataracts in dogs may take weeks or even years in one or both the eyes. Here, the vision will slowly worsen over time and may progress to an extent of blindness. Symptom of a cataract is the development of a spot on the eye(s), which is of bluish gray in color or it may also mimic the appearance of a chip of ice.
Ingrowing Eyelids
In this canine eye problem, the dogs eyelids actually turn in. This disease can be inherited or may be a repercussion of continuous inflammation. Due to the eyelids which turn in, the eye lashes are caused to rub against the eye ball and this sometimes may give rise to a corneal ulcer. To detect this disease, gently pull the lids away from the dogs eye and release them. If you see that the lids turn in or cuff back in on themselves, then you should be alarmed of an in - growing eyelid problem and consult a veterinarian at the earliest.
Corneal Ulcers
Dogs usually have a full recuperation from corneal ulcers. The onset of ulcers have accidents, eye conformation, dry eyes, herpesvirus-1 infection, etc., as their cause. Partially closed eyes or lots of tear production, are the major signs of your dog suffering from corneal ulcers. These ulcers are painful too and so the dog can be seen pawing at the effected eye.
Cherry Eye
In dogs, each eye has a third eyelid in its corner, which contains a tear gland. Now the gland of this eyelid may prolapse or come out of its normal position and swell. This condition is known as a cherry eye. One or both the eyes may get affected by this disease. What causes such canine eye problems is not known. However, it is believed that if the connective tissue that attaches the gland to the surrounding structures of the eye is weakened, then the risk of the development of the disease increases.
These were some canine eye problems, which most dogs are diagnosed with. Such and many other problems might range from being mild to severe. Mild cases can be treated without causing much problem to the pets health. However, it is most likely that you may have to consult a veterinary ophthalmologist, in order to take care of severe cases. Speaking of prevention, proper pet care is what is required to keep your pet companions from all such nasty diseases and helping them to be happier and healthier.

Mommy goes on airplane Whitecastle for everyone else
Mommy goes on airplane Whitecastle for everyone else
Why is it that these kiddos wake up at the butt crack of dawn when you dont want them to, but EVERY TIME you need them to wake up at their normal early hour, they are just snoozing away? This kills me. Just kills me. These pics are from the last time I was out of town and Joel had to take them to daycare in the morning. He has to leave at 6:15 in order to drop them off and get to work on time. Normally they are up definitely by 6 and usually at least 5:45 at the latest. On this day, at 6:05, still sawing logs.
A few times when Ive traveled for work, Joel has taken the kids to Whitecastle for dinner. Now, because of this sort-of tradition, at least once a week as we go past the Whitecastle on the way to daycare, one of the kids will ask me, "Mommy, when are you going on the airplane again?" (Thats what we call it when I travel - cause usually its on an airplane.)
Earlier this week, Lily saw the Whitecastle and asked me when I was going on an airplane next.
Me: "In a few weeks. Why? Are you trying to get rid of me so you can go to Whitecastle with Daddy?"
Lily: "NO!!" (pause for a few seconds) "When is Daddy going to go on the airplane?"
Tyler: "Daddy not going on airplane. Daddys going on motorcycle trip."
I couldnt believe my ears. Joel has been planning a little motorcycle trip for this weekend and weve just been talking about it between the two of us. We hadnt specifically told the kids what was going on - but they had been around when we were discussing it. It just blew my mind that Tyler had picked up on the conversation, understood it and relevantly brought it up in the right context. Hes 2.5! Not 5! Maybe this is totally normal and age appropriate and Im just stuck in the "hes my baby" mode and not realizing that hes not actually a baby anymore.

1. [+503, -32] I remember there used to be the saying that prostitutes used to dress to look like college students but now its college students who dress to look like prostitutes. Seems accurate.
2. [+438, -27] Her moms tough on her but she really does show too much skin... I know that at her age she wants to look pretty and all but shes going to regret it later... Considering how dangerous the world is lately, she should tone it down..
3. [+357, -34] Girls with pretty faces get attention without having to show skin like this so they dont do it. Its always the people who only get attention through showing skin that continue to dress like this because they crave that attention and lose self esteem when they dont get it. Men of course like women with good bodies but not women who show it off excessively like this ??? Theyre just eye candy to them. They wouldnt want their own girlfriend dressing like that and would cover them up ???
4. [+46, -2] Shes not a prostitute but a minor so whats she doing dressed like that? Tsk tsk. People always argue that the way you dress has nothing to do with sex crimes but I doubt any of you would let your little sister or family member go out and about dressed like that too
5. [+41, -0] To all you junior high school, high school girls who copy celebrities... please dont mistake stage outfits for regular every day clothes.
6. [+38, -8] Shes still a minor, she should tone it down. Shes not a celebrity where this is appropriate. What a mess..
7. [+30, -2] Shes sadly mistaken if she thinks the attention she gets for being dressed liket his is anything positive. A student should look her age instead of trying to awkwardly look like an adult. She doesnt look pretty or cool at all. Any man who looks at her wouldnt think she looked pretty for dressing like that, tsk tsk.
8. [+28, -2] Sad part is that she isnt even pretty. She only looks half decent because shes showing that much skin.

Source: TV Daily via Nate
1. [+113, -8] She has a great body and a unique look but I think she wants respect for her individuality. I highly doubt shell change her clothes style at all. However, I do think she should listen to her mother and stop wearing clothes that show off cleavage or her butt cheeks... She has a great enough body that can be shown off even in clothes that cover her up more.
2. [+107, -4] I get where shes coming from. Shes maturing and her bodys filling out so its cool to see sexier clothes fitting and all the attention shes getting for it but in the end, it seems more like an issue with her self esteem. She needs to love herself to gain confidence. No one will believe shes a confident person for walking around with her skin showing like that. Her mother isnt wrong, she isnt nagging when she tells her to cover up her legs at church.
3. [+94, -5] I agree with Seo Jang Hoon. She doesnt look cool at all, just like a little kid wearing her moms clothes and shoes. I get that she has her own style but theres a limit to everything in life.
4. [+17, -1] If she really was confident in her looks, she wouldnt feel the need to show off so much skin like this. People will recognize your beauty whether you show it off or not. Her style is no where appropriate for a high school student...
5. [+16, -0] I dont think shell ever change her style. And I bet shell 100% get plastic surgery after seeing how her face looks on TV.

1. [+745, -21] Kids copy every single action of idols... even elementary school students wear revealing clothes, make up, and do sexy dances. Idols, its all your fault and your agencys fault that this is happening...
2. [+610, -19] I wonder if these kids know that even idols dont dress like this because they want to
3. [+462, -8] Had no idea she was a high school student with the way she was dressing
4. [+199, -12] I hope Hyuna feels a sense of responsibility with junior/high school students copying the way she dresses on stage. I know that she claims its just a concept or a character for her but still.
5. [+185, -7] Dont these students see countless celebrities who get popular for showing skin regret it later and cry about it on TV shows?

Matthew started swimming lessons at the local leisure centre yesterday. He has new googles and swimming trunks for the occasion - its been a long time since he came swimming with us, because Louise cant swim and my eczema flared up after our last visit which has prevented me from going back.
As a result, he was quite nervous going into the water. He is in the beginners group, and at the moment they are just learning to float and get used to the water. Louise watched Matthew from the cafe (I was in work), and said that he didnt seem to enjoy putting his face in the water to collect hoops that had been dropped to the bottom of the pool. He also struggled to put the float around his body, and slipped a number of times trying to get in and out of the pool.
Despite all this, he was happy afterwards and is willing to go again. I had swimming lessons at a similar age, and Im glad I did - I used to enjoy swimming before my skin was too bad for me to go in. Its a shame I cant go in the pool with Matthew and Daniel as Im sure wed have a lot of fun.
PS: In case youre wondering why the blog hasnt been updated since January, read this post. Ive been blogging offline for the last three months and it has been good to upload all the posts and get back to normal this week!

My Dream House
My Dream House
I walk by this house on my nightly walks with Shepherd. Last night, I stopped, picked up my phone for the first time in forty-five minutes and snapped this picture. After, I pointed the stroller towards it and pointed it out to him. I told him that one day I would buy this house. We would live in it and take good care of it. As we started walking away, I told him that he and his future siblings would play on the lawn and run through the sprinklers one day. Even if he was 16 years old. Id make him do it. Because Im a good mother that puts his needs first. And he needs the memories of running through the sprinklers at this house, regardless of age.
Its funny how a house can make you envision what you want your future to look like. I can see my family in this house. I can see the Christmases and birthday celebration. I want that life. I want my home to be as welcoming as this one seems to be.
It doesnt help that one of my sisters dream house is across the street and a few houses down.
That would just be the cherry on top.

Hardy proves the alert wasnt just a fluke
Hardy proves the alert wasnt just a fluke
So, the bad news is that Im still having issues with rheumatoid in my chest wall! The great news is that, apparently this morning, Hardy decided to show me that his alerting yesterday hadnt been a fluke. After hed eaten breakfast, he asked to come up on the bed with me and alerted before Laurel did! She confirmed it minutes later and another party was had by all! He was very proud of himself and was telling Laurel all about it!

Lego exhibition
Lego exhibition
We took Matthew (and Daniel) to the "Beyond the Brick" Lego exhibition today. Matthew enjoyed himself and had fun looking round the very impressive lego structures - buildings, trains, spaceships and even a football pitch with spectators. He also had fun building his own spaceship with Lego in the play area. Even though we had a discount, the entrance fee still felt pretty steep for what was on offer, although to be fair there were also a selection of Lego related films available to view (including the Lego Movie), and workshops, neither of which we could attend because Daniel was too young.
I was also hoping they would cater for smaller children with a Duplo play area, which Daniel would have really enjoyed, but there wasnt anything there and so Daniel had to spend his time in the pushchair, especially frustrating as he couldnt touch any of the models which he really wanted to. He actually behaved well considering he couldnt do much, and did particularly enjoy watching the Lego trains going round.
At the end we went to the shop and one thing which shocked me was the price of the Star Wars and Batman Lego minifigures Matthew looked at! Needless to say, we ended up with a kit instead.

Saturday Adventures
Saturday Adventures
Now that it is starting to warm up we love spending time riding around in the Jeep. Wrekker loves the fresh air and we are grateful that there is so much Boy inside him already. He loves to help dad work in it and just be a part of his Saturday Mornings outside. We love to go and visit Grandma Popes grave. Kason and I know that she plays such a special part in Wrekkers life. We wont give away too many traumatizing details, but we know she helped bring him into our lives, on the same day she left ours.

Eye Infection Gone Bad
Eye Infection Gone Bad
A contact lens patient called my office saying she was recently treated medically at an urgent care center for an eye infection last week. She was given a basic antibiotic and did not return for care. She noticed the vision was getting worse. She called my office (for the first time) about a week later and my staff told her she needed to be seen in our office immediately. When we examined her she couldnt even see the big E with her glasses. Worse, though, was that she had a dense, central corneal scar. We immediately contacted her insurance company and we referred her to the emergency room immediately at a local hospital where it was stated she needed to seen an ophthalmologist and preferably, a corneal specialist.
The take home point is that if youre treated at urgent care for an eye infection, you need to be followed up by an optometrist or ophthalmologist to rule out progression of the disease. We are hoping that there isnt any permanent loss of vision with this patient.

Whistling
Whistling
Matthew has taught himself how to whistle. Hes been trying for a while, and this evening managed to whistle a single note clearly for the first time. He still finds it difficult to whistle a tune, but Im sure it wont be long before he can. I was impressed as I couldnt whistle until I was at least 10.

Monsters University
Monsters University
Louise and I took Matthew to see Monsters University today at the cinema in 3D. Unfortunately some of the trailers werent really appropriate and he found them quite scary - he didnt like the Walking With Dinosaurs 3D trailer, for example, because the dinosaurs were too realistic - so he was gripping on to my arm and asking to go home before the film had even started. Fortunately once the film had begun he began to relax, as he knew the characters from Monsters Inc. and hes used to Disney Pixar films being a huge Toy Story and Cars fan. In the end, we all enjoyed the film and apart from having to go to the toilet twice Matthew behaved very well. Matthew got to try popcorn too, which he liked, although he complained of a bad stomach on the journey home.

Archeologists reveal Vitamin C deficiency wiped out an entire town

Archaeologists reveal: Vitamin C deficiency wiped out an entire town
Posted by: Lori Alton, staff writer in Vitamin C Benefits May 23, 2016 3 Comments
(NaturalHealth365) Although surrounded by fruits rich in vitamin C, the earliest European colonists settling in the New World suffered severe deficiency of this critical vitamin. Archaeologists have studied the bones of the early settlers of La Isabela, located in the modern-day Dominican Republic, and found evidence of scurvy.
Diseases like smallpox, malaria and influenza have long been blamed for the demise of the village. But new evidence gathered from graveyard remains near the site of the towns church reveal that severe vitamin C deficiency, or scurvy, was the true culprit behind the many deaths at Columbuss first settlement.
Vitamin C deficiency leads to whole slate of serious, deadly illnesses
Archaeologist Vera Tiesler ,Universidad Autonma, de Yucatan, Mexico, authored the study and points out that many diseases, epidemics and fevers plagued the early colonists, sparing no one and eventually leading to the abandonment of the village. However, it appears scurvy played a pivotal role in the weakening and eventual deaths of the settlers.
Vitamin C deficiency is known to produce multiple symptoms, including anemia, lethargy, and re-opening of past wounds. Noticeable symptoms first appear following about one to three months of complete vitamin deficiency. The bones of the early colonists at La Isabela show distinct signs of severe vitamin C deficiency.
Keep in mind, some of the health problems associated with long-term, low levels of vitamin C in the body include:
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
- Increased risk of cancer
- Atherosclerosis
- Bleeding gums
- Swollen and painful joints
Weakened immune systems caused greater susceptibility to disease
While the skeletal remains of the inhabitants of La Isabela still bear the telltale signs of scurvy, severe vitamin C deficiency likely played an indirect role in causing so many deaths as well. Healthcare providers and patients alike generally acknowledge the importance of a strong immune system in sustaining life and maintaining optimal health.
The immune system is essential for recovering from an infection, helping diseased cells to recover to a state of normal health, and neutralizing and eliminating toxins. It is also well understood that a strong, competent immune system is the best way to ward off disease and illness before it gets a start.
Scientific studies begun more than a half century ago and continued through today establishes the key role that vitamin C can play in fighting acute viral and bacterial infections. It also plays a critical role in neutralizing most toxin exposures.
Known as a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C plays a significant role in warding off cancer and other disease, playing an expansive role in strengthening the immune system and improving its ability to overcome and prevent disease. In addition to its antioxidant properties, vitamin C carries out a number of other functions of the immune system, including enhanced antibody production and natural killer cell activities, among other important functions.
It is likely that the colonists suffered not only directly from the symptoms of scurvy as evidenced in the striations carved in the outer lining of bones found in the skeletal remains but also from weakened immune systems. This weakened state likely allowed cancer, infection and other diseases to run rampant through the towns population.

Outcomes after the therapy similar to those for patients who dont carry the virusBy Robert Preidt
Wednesday, June 15, 2016WEDNESDAY, June 15, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- People living with HIV are at high risk for lymphoma, and a new study concludes that stem cell transplant should be standard treatment in these cases.
The transplants should be "autologous" -- meaning the cells come from the patients themselves, the researchers said.
The new findings could challenge the widely held belief that HIV-positive patients are not candidates for this therapy.
Instead, the study found that "overall survival for patients with HIV infection after transplant is comparable to that seen in people who were not HIV-infected," said study lead author Dr. Joseph Alvarnas.
As his team explained, people with HIV are at increased risk for cancer, even if their infection is well-controlled with antiretroviral drugs. In fact, cancer is now a leading cause of death among HIV patients.
The risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, specifically in HIV-positive people, is up to 25 times higher than for people without HIV, Alvarnas team noted.
In an autologous stem cell transplant, healthy cells are removed from the patients own blood or bone marrow and administered to the patient to help recovery after high-dose chemotherapy.
Its already standard treatment for patients with relapsed and treatment-resistant Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the researchers pointed out. However, the therapys use in HIV patients with these illnesses has been largely restricted to centers with HIV expertise.
Elsewhere, doctors have been reluctant to treat HIV patients with stem cell transplant, Alvarnas team explained. There have been concerns that these patients immune systems might not recover after intensive chemotherapy or that the procedure would cause toxicity or infections.
But is that necessarily so? To find out, the new study included 40 patients with HIV and lymphoma and 151 lymphoma patients without HIV. Patients in both groups received autologous stem cell transplants.
Overall survival among the patients with HIV was 87.3 percent after one year and 82 percent after two years, the study found. Thats barely different from the 87.7 percent one-year survival of patients without HIV, the researchers said.
The rate of transplant-related death -- from causes such as recurrence/persistence of the lymphoma, fungal infection or cardiac arrest -- among HIV patients was 5.2 percent. Again, that rate was comparable to patients without the virus, Alvarnas team said.
And one year after transplant, 82 percent of patients with HIV still maintained healthy, undetectable levels of HIV, according to the study published online June 13 in the journal Blood.
"These findings are remarkably important for a group of patients who, up until now, have been inconsistently treated," said Alvarnas, an associate clinical professor of hematology at City of Hope National Medical Center, in Duarte, Calif.
He believes that stem cell therapy can be of real value to lymphoma patients, including those with HIV.
"Transplantation allows clinicians to treat the cancer most effectively by using more intense doses of chemotherapy than can typically be given, while avoiding fears of wiping out the bone marrow," Alvarnas explained in a journal news release.
"Based on our data, autologous stem cell transplant should be considered the standard of care for patients with HIV-related lymphomas for the same indications and under the same circumstances that we would use it in patients without HIV infection," he said.
