Hardy proves the alert wasnt just a fluke

Hardy proves the alert wasnt just a fluke

So, the bad news is that Im still having issues with rheumatoid in my chest wall! The great news is that, apparently this morning, Hardy decided to show me that his alerting yesterday hadnt been a fluke. After hed eaten breakfast, he asked to come up on the bed with me and alerted before Laurel did! She confirmed it minutes later and another party was had by all! He was very proud of himself and was telling Laurel all about it!

Just 6 Percent of Chest Pain Cases in ER Are Life-Threatening: Study

Muscle strains, anxiety, gastrointestinal issues often to blame, doctor says

WEDNESDAY, June 15, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Americans who develop chest pain often rush to the hospital, where theyre treated with urgency. A new study suggests, however, that less than 6 percent of these patients suffer from life-threatening conditions such as a heart attack.
Most often, physicians cant determine the cause of patients chest pain, the researchers found.
But chest pain can be a sign of serious illness, cautioned study lead author Dr. Renee Hsia, an emergency room physician and director of Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco.
"This doesnt mean that patients shouldnt be worried when they experience chest pain," she said. "Depending on their risk factors, they certainly could be having a heart attack or another life-threatening condition, which is why it is important to seek timely medical care.
"In the right patient population with risk factors, we should certainly proceed with appropriate testing to exclude the possibility of life-threatening conditions," she added.
In the United States, chest pain accounts for more than 8 million emergency room visits a year. Only abdominal pain brings in more patients, Hsia said.
"Chest pain is very worrisome because it can be a harbinger of serious illness, such as a heart attack or aortic dissection [tear in the aorta], for example," she said. As a result, patients with chest pain often get treated before others because their condition is considered more urgent, she said.
For the new study, researchers analyzed a database that includes details from a sampling of U.S. emergency room visits. They focused on nearly 11,000 patient records from 2005 to 2011 for chest pain not due to trauma, such as a car accident.
Only 5.5 percent of patients were diagnosed with six conditions thought to be life-threatening: blocked blood vessels due to heart attack or a similar condition; tear in the aorta; lung embolisms; lung collapses; esophageal ruptures; and perforated peptic ulcers.
Heart attack-type events accounted for nearly all of those life-threatening diagnoses. The likelihood of the other conditions is rare, the researchers found.
Overall, 57 percent of the patients were discharged. Fifty-one patients (0.4 percent) died in the hospital or emergency room.
According to the study, the most common diagnosis for chest pain is "nonspecific chest pain," which means a cause couldnt be determined. This occurred in more than five out of 10 patients examined for chest pain.
In those "non-specific" cases, whats going on?
Muscle strains, anxiety and gastrointestinal issues may explain many of the symptoms, said Dr. Michael Weinstock. He is chairman of the emergency department and director of medical education at Mount Carmel St. Anns Hospital, in Westerville, Ohio.
Weinstocks own research has reached similar conclusions. Still, "everybody knows somebody who dropped dead of a massive heart attack," he said, and chest pain can be a sign. "Thats what scares patients and doctors so much. Nobody wants to send someone home who may be having a heart attack."
Weinstock said patients who experience chest pain shouldnt do anything differently as a result of this new study: They should call their primary doctor or 911.
Chest pain is especially urgent for women, the elderly and diabetics, he said, and when it comes with symptoms such as dizziness, passing out or shortness of breath.
The study was published June 13 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Ride or Die Club Lets hope just RIDE!

We are so excited to announce that we are the proud owners of our brand new motorcycle. I think is called a Honda Raider S.. I think! We have had so much fun on this bad boy! I am so happy that Kason is so happy! It is so relaxing to just go for a night ride and enjoy the air on your face. One night we rode it around until like 3:00 in the morning! We found us our special place to sit and we just talked all night and then kept riding some more. I love holding onto the back of my big strong handsome husband. He is such a safe driver and I feel so protected with him at all times. We are so excited for the weather to cool down so we can have so much fun with our new toy!
Next on the agenda: Matching Tats!... bahahaha just kidding!

There’s More To Vision Than Just 20 20

There’s More To Vision Than Just 20 20

When examining patients for glasses and contact lenses, being able to have those patients see clearly with the prescription is of course very important.  I recently prescribed a pair of glasses for a patient whose comment was, “I feel like my jaw is unclenching when I put these on.”  This is because the eyes did not work well together and when I prescribed a lens called “prism,” it helped the eyes to work better with each other.  In another case, I was doing vision training with a college football player.  His comment was “that everything looked as it was unfolding a lot more slowly implying that he was able to react to a situation on the field more quickly.
Making sure the patient receives a pair of glasses that takes care of the task is important.  So many patients older than 45 need bifocal lenses so they can see distance and near.  If they’re working a desktop computer with the screen at eye level as well at a different distance than their normal reading, could lead to a lot of neck, shoulder or eyestrain.  Usually a separate pair of glasses needs to prescribed for this situation. The same thing goes for an electrician who often times has to look at close up detail above his head.  In this case, we have to put a bifocal lens both below the center and above the center of straight away vision.  Even though these glasses don’t look pretty, for some patients who have this demand, they’re very functional.
Also, many times a child will have 20/20 vision at distance and near but still have a learning problem that’s visually related.  Sometimes glasses alone will help remedy the problem and sometimes you also need vision training.  This is sometimes overlooked by the practitioner.
These are just a few examples of  patients who may have 20/20 either with glasses or without who still may have vision problems.

Just the THREE of us!

Just the THREE of us!

Oh my goodness! Where do I even start! I cant believe Im even writing this post! Its official.. After 10 months of being newlyweds, its not just US anymore! WERE PREGNANT!! We found out on Sunday, March 3rd, 2013. I knew I was pretty late, but that is kinda normal for me so neither one of us had put that much thought into it. Several doctors had told us before hand that it would probably be pretty difficult for us to get pregnant when the time came and so we hadnt really thought about it much. In case you forgot we havent even been married one year! Ha ha ha! So Sunday morning we woke up and started moving around and Kason joked that I should take a test and so I agreed just because we were NOT expecting anything from it! I went upstairs and read the instructions 462672 times. After I was done it said it would take 5 minutes or so to process. I put the cap on and washed my hands. It had a digital screen that had an hour glass dropping sand and so as I reached for the towel I checked to make sure it was still working.... It said, "PREGNANT" I couldnt believe it! It had maybe been 20 seconds! (Yes, just because I teach kindergarten doesnt mean I go through the entire alphabet each time I wash my hands) I grabbed the stick and RAN downstairs! Kason knew what it said before I even handed it to him! We both looked at each other in shock! We knew we must be way pregnant too because my last period had been like 6 weeks before! I didnt know what to say or think so of course I just cried ha ha ha I think I was nervous and scared and a little...okay a lot shocked! I just looked at him and started to cry. I wasnt sad, I just was nervous, and scared, and couldnt BELIEVE WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A BABY!
We couldnt wait to tell our families and so we both went and got dressed and drove down to Bunkerville. I was trying to think of a million simple but clever ways we could tell them. We decided that we would write with chalk on their driveway so when they were driving home they would see a message waiting down below their house. We wrote, "Two New Grandparents Live Here!" Then we drew arrows that pointed them all the way to their house. You know, just in case they werent thinking it was them! They were very excited! They couldnt believe it either! Natilyn, has a broken ankle and so she had just got a new hard cast put on. She hadnt heard our exciting news and it worked out perfect because the first thing she said to us was, "Want to sign my cast?!" Of course I agreed, and told her she had to close her eyes. I wrote, "Nat, Youre Going To Be An AUNT!!" She read it a few times and then her eyes finally popped wide! She was very excited too! We left from my familys house and headed home to tell Kasons family. It was actually kind of late when we finally made it to his parents house, we went in and werent quite sure what to say. It wasnt that I didnt want to tell them in a cute way too, but they already have grand kids, so I knew it wouldnt be as exciting as it was for my mom and dad, because this will be their first! Kelton and Kelli were playing around on their computer and Kelton seemed a little testy, so it was already making the night even more awkward ha ha. Kason sparked a random conversation about some empty picture frames Kelli needed to hang on her wall and asked what she was going to put there. She said she wasnt sure, so Kas said, "You can hang a picture of your new grand baby..." She lifted her head and said, "what?" and then she realized what he had said and they both were so excited! They were very, very shocked ha ha ha! When we told them that we drew with chalk on my parents driveway they were a little sad. So they made us go out to their driveway (at 10pm) and write the same thing ha ha ha. It was super fun! :) I am so glad we did so we could get a cute picture of our adventurous night!
After, all our excitement rubbed off we went home and climbed into bed. I had a slight nervous break down. I am sure the first of many, and Kas was so sweet to help me realize it would be okay! He is such a wonderful husband and I am so happy that he is mine for eternity. I couldnt have ever picked a greater man, or a more wonderful father for our cute babies!

We Just Participated in the 2011 ACVO Merial Service Dog Eye Exam

We Just Participated in the 2011 ACVO Merial Service Dog Eye Exam

This afternoon, we took the Labs down to see Dr. Bobofchak at Eye Care for Animals in Akron as part of the free eye exams given to service dogs compliments of ACVO (American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists) & Merial. In the past, Laurel has seen a different board certified ophthalmologist but the day her office did the exams this year didnt work for us. Dr. Bobofchak offered the exams any day in May.
The past two years, the doctor had seen some discolored spots of pigment in Laurels eyes that apparently, could be nothing or could turn into something awful. This year, Dr. B didnt see the spots so that was great news!
He did, however, notice that Hardy has Distichiasis, which is the presence of abnormal hairs growing from the edge of the eyelid. Sometimes, there are no symptoms but, as in Hardys case, the abnormal eyelashes can cause irritation to the cornea. As a result, he has a gummy discharge so Dr. B recommended that he perform a cryoepilation. While Hardy is under general anesthesia, he will use a fine needle probe with liquid nitrogen to freeze the root and kill the hair. Since it is causing irritation and we dont want to risk a corneal ulcer, we have planned the procedure for the beginning of June.
Unfortunately, that diagnosis was not the bad news ... while looking at Hardys retinas, Dr. B saw that he has geographic retinal dysplasia, a horseshoe shaped area of retinal folds above the center of vision in one eye. Thankfully, it is not progressive and Dr. B doesnt think it will ever effect his eyesight (although he may have a slightly higher chance of having a detached retina at some point). It is hereditary - caused by recessive genes so even though Hardys parents are CERF tested and certified, they must both be carriers. Hopefully, the only way it will ever effect Hardy is that he will never be used for breeding - the concern would be for his offspring. We will wait until he is 18 months - 2 years old and then he will either have a vasectomy or be neutered.
I immediately called Hardys breeder and she was stunned and understandably upset. We werent planning to neuter him - since he is such a handsome dog with lovely conformation and such a great temperament, I wanted to have the chance to use him to get my next service dog candidate. However, the more I see of Donna and her dogs, the more impressed I am - I would have asked to use one of her bitches to breed Hardy to anyway so I am confident that I will be able to find another wonderful puppy in 3-4 years when we are looking for my next service dog candidate. Even though, I must admit to being pretty sad when we got the news and I kept thinking that this shouldnt be happening since I did everything right this time! But, as Brent pointed out, nothing is certain in life and Hardy is still the same great dog today as he was yesterday!
A cameraman from our local Fox 8 television station came to our exam and videotaped it so all of us were on the 6:00 News for all of 30 seconds but it was a great piece about the veterinarians who do these complimentary eye exams! And I am very grateful to ACVO, Merial, the sponsors and local veterinarians who donate their time and services to protect the eye health of various types of working dogs (police, search & rescue, therapy as well as service dogs)! It was certainly better to find out about Hardys eye issues now instead of later - we can treat the one and will watch the other through the annual eye exam.
There isnt a link for the video so I have included a couple photos I took of the piece playing on our television:
