He got sum right!

He got sum right!

This evening I discovered that Matthew had been writing out his own sums - and marking them!  As you can see, he got a few right, but still has a bit to learn about the larger sums.

Massachusetts Optician on Sunglasses Choosing the Right Ones

Massachusetts Optician on Sunglasses Choosing the Right Ones

Choosing the right sunglasses means understanding that they are more than just a fashion accessory,” commented Massachusetts Optician Jocelyn Mylott, R.D.O. of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Lancaster, Acton & Gardner, Massachusetts. “Sunglasses are an important form of protection for your eyes against the damaging rays of the sun.”

Its important for you to know what types of light you need to protect your eyes from and what types of light are not necessarily harmful. Here are some tips for picking the right pair of nonprescription sunglasses.
  • Choose Sunglasses that Block 99% of Ultraviolet (UV) Rays. This is the most important feature of your sunglasses, and you should always choose sunglasses that provide this protection. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight is linked to eye disease, including cataracts. Some manufacturers labels say UV absorption up to 400nm. This is the same thing as 100 percent UV absorption. Some glasses make additional claims for blocking infrared rays, but research has not shown a close connection between infrared rays and eye disease.
  •  Dont Rely on the Price. Many types of affordable sunglasses offer 99 to 100% UV protection, so you dont necessarily need to spend a lot of money on a pair of sunglasses.
  • Do Rely on the Quality. In addition to UV protection, you also want to check the optical quality of the lenses. You can easily test the quality of sunglasses by looking at something with a rectangular pattern, such as a floor tile. Hold the glasses at a comfortable distance and cover one eye. Move the glasses slowly from side to side, then up and down. If the lines stay straight, the lenses are fine. If the lines wiggle, especially in the center of the lens, try another pair.
  • Look for Impact-Resistant Lenses. All sunglasses must meet impact standards set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety. No lens is truly unbreakable, but plastic lenses are less likely to shatter when hit by a ball or stone. Polycarbonate plastics, used in many sports sunglasses, are especially strong, but scratch easily. If you buy polycarbonate lenses, choose ones with a scratch-resistant coating.
  • Use Protective Eyewear NOT Sunglasses for Hazardous Activities. If you are going to be engaged in outdoor activities like water or snow skiing that put your eye at risk for injury, dont count on your eyeglasses for protection. Protective eyewear is available with UV protection to shield your eyes from sunburn and glare.
  • Lens Color Tinting & Polarization are Personal Preferences. Theres no medical reason to recommend one tint of lens over another. Likewise, while polarized lenses work better at deflecting glare, theyre not blocking any more harmful UV light than non-polarized lenses.
Once you have the right sunglasses, make sure you wear them, especially in the summer when UV levels are at least three times higher than in the winter. Also be sure to wear them when participating in winter sports, particularly at high elevations.

How to Choose the Right Dog

How to Choose the Right Dog

Youve always wanted a pet dog and you can almost see your new pet - chasing after Frisbees in parks, running like a mad creature in the sun, learning new tricks that make you laugh, throwing up outside your bathroom at 3 in the morning, chewing your rugs and carpets, shedding on every possible thing - thinking of all this, does getting a dog still sound like a good idea to you? If yes, then congratulations you have come to just the right place.

Here is what every dog-owners (or pet-owners) mantra should be: A dog is a living, loving, caring, hurting animal. If you are looking for a dog because you think that it will look great in your new car, then think again buddy - your new dog is just about to turn you life into a living nightmare! From tearing up that expensive leather upholstery to vomiting on your designer shoes - your pet dog is going to transform you from being a bachelor to someone who feels, acts and even thinks like a father of three! Remember, you are not buying yourself a watch. Your dog will be like your child - your child that cant speak. So, repeat this mantra a couple of times to prepare yourself. If you are a working person and work all day for six days a week, then you are going to end up with a unhappy and lonely pup on your hands. It isnt your puppies fault.

Personality Match

Choosing a dog is akin to the zen method of self-discovery. Until and unless you really know yourself, you are never going to be able to choose the right dog. For instance, an athlete would quite obviously prefer an active pup. A lazy person would probably go for a dog that doesnt need a lot of exercising. A touchy-feely, sentimental person would love to have a friendly dog. A stuck-up person would prefer to buy a dog that doesnt shed or bark too much. Choosing a dog is very similar to choosing a friend or a mate - you always go for a dog that suits you personality, or compliments it.

How Big is Your Place

Now that you have figured out what breed suits your personality, its time to see if your dog will fit in with your living space. Before you go ahead and buy yourself a dog, first take a look at your living space. Ask yourself questions like - do you have enough room for a dog? Is your yard carefully fenced? Do you want a big dog or a teeny weeny little terrier? No matter how well a certain breed matches your personality, it is very important to make sure your living space matches it as well. It would be absolutely cruel to keep a big dog like a great dane cooped up in a tiny apartment all day long.

Next, ask yourself whether your schedule is suitable for a dog. Are you at home for a reasonable period of time during the day? How many times will you be able to take your dog for a walk? Remember that like humans, dogs also get lonely and if you are not going to be at home for days on end, your dog is going to get depressed. Whats more, you might have to anticipate making changes in your lifestyle in the future. Are you planning on having children? Do you already have children? You dont want to get into an ugly situation where your child doesnt get along with your dog. Make sure you do your homework beforehand and talk to vets, friends, trainers and dog breeders to find out what dog will suit you the best.

Proper Care and Maintenance Affordability

Of course a dog isnt going to make you bankrupt, but owning one is indeed a big investment. Over a period of time, you can expect to spend as much money on your dog as you would on a decent car. But honestly, what would you rather own - a Lexus or extreme love?

The dog itself isnt expensive, but it is the taking care of the dog part that is more expensive. From dog food to veterinary expenses to other things like check-ups, spaying or neutering, flea and tick control, dental care, and so on, your dog is going to cost you a considerable amount of money. There are many places to go to if you are looking for a dog - from the animal shelter to a pet store and even breeders - your pet can be found just about anywhere!

Now that you know why you want a dog, you need to know what you are getting into beforehand. This article has focused on the unglamorous side of taking care of a dog and what you need to know before you adopt/rescue a dog/puppy. If you take good care of your dog and treat it the right way, you will be showered with love and affection. And, who doesnt want love, affection and companionship?

Everyone Knock on Wood Immediately Like Right Now

Everyone Knock on Wood Immediately Like Right Now

I mentioned that we sent Lily away so that we could work with Tyler on his sleep.  He has been getting up most nights at least once during the night and then insisting on starting the day at 5-5:30 every day.  Were so tired from all the middle of the night wake up calls and the yelling for Daddy when I would try to get him back to bed.  We needed an intervention.  Heres the play by play...sorry if its too detailed but this is kind of part of my therapy.  If you dont like it, skip to the bottom and check out the photos.

We put up a baby gate at Tylers door to keep him in his room.  The idea was that we just tell him to go back to bed and we dont really "engage" with him when he gets up at an unacceptable time.  Just say it once softly and then we go back to our room.

Well, the first night, he got up a 3:00am.  I told him to go back to bed and he did.  At 3:15 he got up again.  Said he had to pee so I had to let him out of the gate so he could go - and he did pee.  He got up again at 3:45 for no reason at all and I put him back to bed.  Then he slept until 5:30.

That was the ONLY night the entire week that he got up before 5:15 and he didnt fight me at all (so the whole bit where we worried about Lily getting disturbed turned out to nothing to worry about).  No issues any other night with middle of the night waking.  None.  What the?

He did, however, continue to wake up between 5-5:20am every day.  Always saying he had to pee and most days, he really did go.  Joel moved the gate to the hallway so that Tyler could get to the bathroom without needing us to let him out.  At first Tyler wouldnt go to the bathroom without one of us right there, but by the end of the week, he was doing better.

We sent him back to his room until close to 6:00am - cause thats wake up time.  Not 5:30.  Most of the time, he complied.

We were feeling pretty good about the process - though seemed like a bit of a fluke.  On Saturday night/Sunday morning at Grams house, that little stinker stayed in bed until after 7:00 CENTRAL TIME - so after 8:00 our time.  What the?!?!  Joel and I were so frustrated because we just cannot figure out how to get him to sleep anywhere near that late at home.  Doesnt matter what time he goes to bed and how much we try to wear him out the day before.

Now, move on to Sunday night - were all back at home and sleeping in our own beds.  And guess what?  Tyler woke up at 1:00am, 3:00am and 4:15am.  OH. MY. GAWD.  Joel and I were nearly delirious with frustration. Tyler finally goes back to sleep and then a crazy thing happened...both kids had to be woken up at 7:00am to get ready for school.  Nuts.

Monday night - 2:15am - "Moooooomy!  Daaaaaddddy!"  Joel and I were both out cold sleeping and jolted awake.  Joel goes flying out of the bed (a rare reaction - normally he moves at a snails pace).  It was Lily this time.  Are.  You.  Bad.  Word.  Kidding.  Me?!  Tyler ended up sleeping ALL NIGHT until 6:50am and Lily was the galldang one waking up in the middle of the night.  Joel and I are absolutely, 100% convinced we are being punished.

Tuesday night, Tyler got up out of bed approximately every 10-15 minutes from 11:30pm until 2:30am.  Sooo, that was awesome.  Full on screaming when I tried to put him back to bed.  Joel had to finally come rescue me (and Tyler from the beating he was about to get).  Lily thankfully slept through the whole ordeal.  This is exactly why we sent Lily to Grams house last week - so we could work through this exact issue where Tyler screams for Joel.  But he NEVER pulled this prank last week - so we didnt get to work on it.

I cried for probably 15 minutes last night after my attempt to put Tyler back to bed at midnight.  I feel so defeated.  We know this will pass....eventually....but we are desperately hoping that it doesnt last much longer.  I dont know how much more of this crappy, interrupted sleep we can handle.

But now for the best news.  I mean, THE BEST news.  (Please dont let me jinx it by writing about it.)

Tyler is potty trained.

Wait, what?  In the span of about 1 weeks time, Tyler just GOT IT.  He was consistently having dry pull ups and I said to Joel on Sunday, why are we even putting these on him any more?  We use the same one all day and it ends up ratty but still dry.  So we chucked the pull ups except for sleep time and so far, Tyler has done GREAT.  No accidents (though Im not naive enough to think we wont have some).  Hes peeing AND pooping on the potty.  He knows when he has to go and he can pee all by himself (as long as the step stool is there).  He needs help taking care of his butt when he poops, but otherwise, hes got it!

Hes such a boy.  He likes to show me the hole in his "wiener" and tells me thats where the pee pee comes from.  I say wiener and penis equally.  Tyler usually says wiener.  No clue what Joel calls it...hmm.  Tyler tells me if he put a big poop or a little poop int he potty.  Or sometimes its a brown snake which I think Ive mentioned before.  (Hes going to be so embarrassed when his fiance reads this in 25 years.)

I think this is about the exact same age that Lily stopped wearing pull ups during the day.  The main difference is, we started with Lily a lot sooner than Tyler so the whole process was harder with Lily and took a lot longer.  With Tyler, mostly of out laziness, we started later.  Turns out that was the perfect approach.  One of my previous coworkers used to say regularly "Procrastination pays."  I always gave him shit about it and accused of him of being a hardcore slacker but apparently there IS a case where this principle is true (and no one suffers crappy consequences from said procrastination).

And crazy enough, his pullup is usually dry when he wakes up from nap/nighttime.  Im pretty sure that we will have Tyler fully out of pullups before Lily.  She still wets her pullup almost every night.  Their physiology must be different.  I dont know if its a boy/girl thing or what??

Im so proud of that little dude.  For the underwear thing - not the getting mad and throwing toys part.  Thats a function of the sleep issues.  Cant win em all.  Heres the part where you knock on wood.  Thanks for your support.  :)

Heres just a few other cute pictures from the last week.

Tablets and snot bubbles. Can not be bothered to deal with snot when trying to assemble the letter A.

Ritz crackers with peanut butter and (still) frozen peas.  Yum?

This kid ate 6 chicken rings and part of his fries from White Castle on his bro-date with Daddy.  Im going to start putting aside an extra $20 a week now to put towards groceries in a few years.  Hes probably going to be 6 tall in 6th grade and eating me out of house and home.  (And also, unrelated but important, dont you just want to squeeze the dickens out of him?  Hes so. stinkin. cute.)

I love this little boy more than I can possibly express in words.  Even though he prevents me from getting a solid 6 hours of straight sleep - I still love him in an overwhelmingly insane way.

Eating icicles.  Im trying not to be grossed out and concerned for their health from all the pollutants probably found in those icicles.  But this is something every kid needs to experience.  Just like eating raw cookie and brownie dough.  Childhood is not complete without it.  Im so grateful that Joel is a "stop and smell the roses" kind of guy and thinks to do this for them. They have no idea how lucky they are.

Oh and one more big deal thing thats Lily related.  The child FINALLY picks out her own clothes and fully dresses herself every single day without fail (and without a fight).  YES!  Sometimes (ok, many times) she doesnt match.  But I dont care.  Perhaps it will be a new trend:  "Pre-School Chic!"

It Could Happen to Anyone Right

It Could Happen to Anyone Right

On Saturday, we had plans to meet with my mom and Larry for a quick lunch at In-N-Out. My mom just got back from the Azores and wanted it before going home to crash. During Shepherds nap, we put in a movie and I played around with my makeup... Trying new techniques, you know. The usual. (Except not really.)

I had joked to Bryan and his brother Seth, who was staying with us, that I would go out of the house with two different eye looks going on. And then I did. Oh man. On my way to lunch I realized that I had, in fact, walked out of the house with bright teal on one eye and one gray and gold. I was horrified. Everyone had a really good laugh at that one. Luckily I had sunglasses with me and I wore them the entire time. Jeez.

--

Today is my first school session and I needed to have headphones with a microphone piece. So yesterday, I video called Denise to make sure it all worked, and luckily for me, she was just having dinner and her friends workplace. One that is know for its Jewish fare.

As we are talking, I joke that I dont know where to put the microphone and I fiddle with it to make really close to my lips, which looks like a mustache. I then crack a few jokes about it looking like a Hitler stache. AND THEN I REMEMBER THE JEWISH PART. So, Denise and I start laughing until we are crying and again, mortified. I think she was sitting by herself, so Im praying no one heard.

I cant be the only one that this kind of stuff happens to....right?

I dropped an F bomb right before Journey Group

I dropped an F bomb right before Journey Group

Wednesday evening was our first small group, which our church (its weird to say type that) lovingly calls Journey groups. Makes sense. They encourage their rather large congregation to break off and get to know each other and walk through life together.

Bryan and I have been attempting this thing called attending church. Bryan is all for it and Im on the fence. Considering that out of the four weeks weve gone, I made us late to three of them. Last week, Ill have you know, that I was ready a half hour before church began. So you know, Im amazing. It only took Bryan and I getting into four fights about it before we collectively decided that while he got to sleep in (like every other day) I get to wake up at my normal time (too early) so that I can get ready in peace.

So last week I got to sleep in a whole zero days. Add in a rather frustrating project on charter school petitions which meant lots of late nights. Dumb.

Back to Journey Group. Let me set the scene by going back to Sunday. Sunday we went to church but while we were there, I started not to feel so good. Like... not at all good. When I got home, I got straight in bed and ended up with some weird stomach flu/virus thing that made me not eat for more than 24 hours. I felt absolutely terrible. I missed work on Monday and Ive just been thrown off my game all week. Food is not a friend, you get what I mean?

Bryan hasnt been feeling so hot either so were just amazing to be around. I told Bryan on Tuesday evening what was for dinner on Wednesday AND THEN reminded him in the morning to take out some tilapia from the freezer. How irritated was I when I got home and was told that we would not be cooking dinner because there wasnt "time". Frying up some fish, microwaving some green beans and there wasnt time?????

I decided not to pursue a fight because I am extremely mature and decided wed pick something up. Bryan had been in charge of figuring out the details of our group because he is familiar with the people who are hosting it. Do you know what he didnt do? Figure out the time, place or phone number of the hosts. We had zero information about where we were going.

Add another layer of irritation.

I keep pushing Bryan to help me figure it out and get Shepherd ready so we can get out the door to grab food and hes about as helpful as a bump on a log. In complete frustration I call HIS MOTHER and she gets me the information which..... sigh. It is now 5:56pm and were pretty sure the group starts at 6:30. Im like hustling to get everything together and we leave.

We had a hard time deciding where to go. I wanted to go to a Subway that was close to where the house was. Bryan decided to go to Port of Subs which was farther away from the house. We go in and there is a line. When I go up to order I ask Bryan what he wants and he says he doesnt want anything.

Im so sorry, but I almost lost my SHIT right there. Like, we started whispering back and forth to each other in that way that married couples do when they are pissed at each other in public... Youve either seen it or done it. No judgement.

I inhale my sandwich and we arrive right before 6:30....................................except there are no cars. We got there a half hour early. Group starts at SEVEN. As I was getting the diaper bag out of the car I made some comment that most definitely had the f-word in it. I just ate food in .2 seconds when my stomach has been completely ridiculous all week. I paid for that all evening/night long.

As the host is doing last minute house cleaning and dishes and getting coffee set up, shes also making small talk with her lame guests that showed up thirty minutes early.

It was all good. Its par for the course for most people trying to get to church, something always goes wrong. I am never more of a heinous biotch than I am on Sunday mornings. We will all face adversity when we are trying to breathe something good into our lives.

That adversity may cause us to utter a few cuss words or bicker with our significant others, but the end result is worth the struggle. Soon there will be less and less of the adversity and the joy of attending, creating new relationships and strengthening others is worth it. A routine will be formed and the struggle you faced trying to better your life will be a distant memory.
