Caldey Island
Caldey Island
I took Matthew for a spur of the moment trip to Caldey Island yesterday for my last days leave of the summer holiday. We were already planning on having a picnic, and as Caldey is somewhere I had always wanted to go I asked Matthew if he wanted to go on a boat ride and have his picnic on an island. He seemed very excited by this, so off we went.
As Matthew has never been on a boat trip before I was a little apprehensive that he might suffer from sea-sickness, but he enjoyed the ride and was happy to look out at the scenery, trying to work out if the boat was travelling faster than the surrounding vessels. When we reached the island, we spent the first hour on the beach where Matthew had fun kicking his Ninja Turtle beach ball up at the sand dunes, climbing the dunes, dodging the waves and writing in the sand (when in Ferryside last week, Matthew enjoyed playing noughts and crosses in the sand, so we also did this).
After this, we went to the village for our picnic, and found a nice picturesque spot in front of the post office. We then briefly explored the small museum and chocolate factory before a visit to the gift shop, where Matthew bought a teddy in a monk outfit. We then had an ice-cream before catching the boat home.
I would have liked to walk to the lighthouse, but Matthew was too tired and not doing so was probably the right choice - I read in the leaflet after coming home that the lighthouse isnt open to the public anyway.
