Diabetes and Your Eyes

Diabetes and Your Eyes

Diabetes can have a significant effect on your eyes and vision. Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or use insulin effectively to control blood sugar levels. Although glucose is an important source of energy for the body’s cells, too much glucose in the blood for a long time can cause damage in many parts of the body, including the heart, kidneys, blood vessels and the small blood vessels in the eyes. When the blood vessels in the retina swell, leak or close off completely, or if abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina, it results in diabetic retinopathy. Those people who are at greater risk of developing diabetic retinopathy are those who have diabetes or poor blood sugar control, women who are pregnant, and people with high blood pressure, high blood lipids or both. Also, people who are from certain ethnic groups, such as African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans, are more likely to develop diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetes can cause vision in your eyes to change even if you do not have retinopathy. If your blood sugar levels change quickly, it can affect the shape of your eye’s crystalline lens, causing blurry vision, which goes back to normal after your blood sugar stabilizes. Maintaining good control of your blood sugar helps reduce episodes of blurry vision.

If you or someone you know has diabetes or even high blood sugar, especially if there is a family history of diabetes, you should have regular eye exams to help protect your eye health and vision. Please feel free to phone D’Ambrosio Eye Care at 800-325-3937 to schedule an appointment, visit D’Ambrosio Eye Care or facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare so that we can help recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

I Sat Down to Edit

I Sat Down to Edit

And its out of focus.

Shit.

Oh well. I was thinking of all these things I wanted to blog about tonight as I was getting Shepherd ready for bed and now that Im here looking at the computer its just gone.

This is how my week has been.

OH! Okay. I remembered.

You guys know that I generally write the evening prior to the posts publication right? Wednesdays post was written Tuesday night. My entries are scheduled for 3:15am because my blog tells me I have a few readers on the east coast. So, I post to make sure that its up by the time people start to rise on the east coast.

It shows I care. However, I dont care enough to actually wake up to blog at that time of day, thus, the typing goes down the night before. Sorry, east coasters! Ha. Coasters!

All that to say, when I blogged on Tuesday night (for the post that went live on Wednesday morning) I was blissfully unaware of what that particular hump day had in store for me.

I woke up in the morning thinking, yeah! Im gonna make this day my b*tch! And then I realized I woke up late. I zoomed out of bed and mentally crossed off actually styling my hair because thats what I do when Im late. I weigh what is essential and what is not.

I threw my hair in a pony because making coffee and a smoothie were more important tasks.

I pour the almond milk in the pitcher and I flipped the switch on that latte maker with a desperation I had never known before. As that magical machine was whirring its little Mr. Coffee heart out I got started on the smoothie.

Frozen banana? Check.

Frozen blueberries? Check.

Greek Yogurt? Check.

Protein powder?
Water?
Spinach?
Apple?

Check. Check. Check. Check.

I put the top on my chopper thing and hold down the button. I check it a few times, looking smooth! Im using a Cuisinart Immersion Chopper thing and Im taking a chance that I wont have to chew my smoothie.

I hear the latte maker stop and my coffee lovin heart starts to beat quickly. I turn around and what do I see?

COFFEE ALL OVER THE COUNTER.

Of course, Im trying to be healthy and save money and it backfires. Argh!!

I clean it up as quickly as possible while having a panic attack. Is my beloved latte maker broken? I check everything and nope, its fine. Operator Error. You know the piece in a coffee pot that holds the filter? Yeah. It works better when its actually used.

I pour what little almond milk/coffee latte is in the pitcher into a cup, rinse and reset everything to make another. I cross the small kitchen to the other side to keep grinding the smoothie.

Its looking good, so I pour it into the smoothie bottle and go back to the latte. I fill up my travel mug and the little bit that is left I pour into a mug, figuring that I would sip it while I throw some makeup on my face.

I taste it from the mug and its DISGUSTING. I think the latte maker burned the almond milk but it tasted like burned almonds. It was horrible. So wrong. I spit it out and dumped the mug and the travel mug in the sink. I grabbed the smoothie and took a big swig because I needed to erase the fowl latte from my taste-buds and almost vomited right there.

The smoothie was chunky. Extremely. Like... cant swallow without chewing. Ick! It was also not nearly cold enough.

I had to run an errand for work and got stuck behind that spanned across the entire town. I got to work and my boss was not happy.

In summary, Wednesday made me her b*tch.

Love is in the air

Love is in the air

Today I am linking up with  Becky to share my love story!
1. How long have you and your significant other been together?
We started dating in October of 2005 so that would be 6 years!

2. How did you meet? {Whats your "love" story?}
It was my freshman year of college at UK and my roommate/best friend (at the time) was dating a guy named Chase and he and Timmy (hubby) were best friends. Timmy was in the Navy and was home on leave and Chase thought it would be fun for us to go on a double date. We went to the Haunted Trail in Jacobson Park and to Dennys. It was a blind date, I didnt really know a thing about him.

3. If married, how long have you been married? If not, is this the guy you hope to marry? {do tell}
We just celebrated our 4th Wedding Anniversary in January!

4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding? If not, where would you like to get married? And will it be big or small?
We got married in my hometown at the church I had grown up going to. It was a big wedding of about 220 guests!

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!
We have all sorts of names like baby, honey, sweetie, babe just the normal little nick-names.

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.
I love how he is such a strong, hard worker for our family.
I love his funny personality and how he can always make me laugh.
I love that he is such a great father!!

7. Tell us how he proposed? Or your ideal proposal?
We had always talked about going to Red River Gorge./Natural Bridge. He had been alot of times and always talked about it and I had been wanting to go. It was March 17th and he took me there. We hiked up to Natural Bridge and I just remember sweating and being all out of breath once we finally made it to the top. We were walking around just taking in the view when he got down on one knee and has me to be his wife.

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?
Flowers and Teddy bear, lots of flowers. He always goes above and beyond even when I tell him not to. He is a really good gift-giver and always remembers.

9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?
Im both. I love anything and everything!

10. Tell us one thing youd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
I would love to go somewhere tropical with him like St. Lucia, St. Johns, Mexico, or Bora Bora.

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentines Day.
This Valentines Day we will hopefully be getting a special little Valentine... Hudson Trent!!!!

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentines day?
Hoping for a precious, sweet healthy baby boy!!

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Never go to bed mad and keep Christ in your relationship and home!!!!! I have learned alot over the past 4 years of our marriage.

14. Show us a picture of what love means to you.

Bryan likes to do things that normal people dont usually do. For example, if Im on my phone not paying attention to him, he might contact me via every social media platform he has access to in order to annoy the heck out of me so that I yell at him, thus letting him win by gaining my attention.

Massachusetts Glaucoma Specialist on Eye Drop iPhone App

Massachusetts Glaucoma Specialist on Eye Drop iPhone App

?
Bin Wu, M.D.
Glaucoma Specialist
?
Massachusetts Glaucoma Specialist Bin Wu, M.D shared information about a free smartphone app to remind glaucoma patients to take their eye drops and medications. “One of our greatest challenges in the treatment of glaucoma is when patients don’t remember to use their glaucoma eye drops or take their other medications,” explained Dr. Wu of D’Ambrosio Eye Care with offices in Athol, Lancaster, Acton & Gardner. “The free smartphone EyeDROPS app should help us get better patient compliance and consistency with their glaucoma medications and thus hopefully better control of the eye disease.”

The EyeDROPS app prompts users to enter information about the eye drops they are taking, including dosages and schedules. The app then alerts patients via their phones when it’s time to put in their eye drops. The app keeps a record of medication usage and informs the patient of the next scheduled dosing time. The free EyeDROPS app even allows patients to take a photo of each bottle to avoid confusion when taking more than one kind of eye drop. The EyeDROPS app is available for Android phones through Google Play and for the Apple iPhone through the App Store. “Early detection, diagnosis and consistent treatment is the name of the game in preventing vision loss from glaucoma,” said Dr. Wu.

If you or someone you know has glaucoma and would like more information about the EyeDROPS app they are encouraged to contact D’Ambrosio Eye Care by calling us at 800-325-3937, visiting D’Ambrosio Eye Care or facebook.com/dambrosioeyecare.

Fluorouracil Interactions

Avoid being near people who have colds, the flu, or other contagious illnesses. Contact your doctor at once if you develop signs of infection.
Do not receive a "live" vaccine while using fluorouracil, and avoid coming into contact with anyone who has recently received a live vaccine. There is a chance that the virus could be passed on to you. Live vaccines include measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), rotavirus, typhoid, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox), zoster (shingles), and nasal flu (influenza) vaccine.
This medicine can pass into body fluids (including urine, feces, vomit, semen, vaginal fluid). For at least 48 hours after you receive a dose, avoid allowing your body fluids to come into contact with your hands or other surfaces. Patients and caregivers should wear rubber gloves while cleaning up body fluids, handling contaminated trash or laundry or changing diapers. Wash hands before and after removing gloves. Wash soiled clothing and linens separately from other laundry.
Body fluids should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant. Use condoms during sexual activity to avoid exposure to body fluids.
Tell your doctor about all other cancer medications you are receiving, especially leucovorin.
Other drugs may interact with fluorouracil, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed in this medication guide. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.

Fluorouracil Dosage

Fluorouracil is injected into a vein through an IV. A healthcare provider will give you this injection.
Your first dose of fluorouracil will be given in a hospital setting where you can be closely watched in case the medication causes serious side effects.
Fluorouracil injections are usually given daily for 3 or 4 days in a row, and then every other day for another 3 or 4 days. This treatment cycle may be repeated once a month. You may also receive a weekly dose. Follow your doctors instructions.
How often you need fluorouracil injections will depend on many factors, including side effects and how your body responds to the medication. Try not to miss any appointments for your fluorouracil injections.
Fluorouracil can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. Your blood will need to be tested often. Your cancer treatments may be delayed based on the results of these tests.
Tell your caregivers if you feel any burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle when the medicine is injected.
Since this medication is given by a healthcare professional in a medical setting, an overdose is unlikely to occur.
Contact your doctor if you miss an appointment for your fluorouracil injection.

Tell your doctor about all medicines you use, and those you start or stop using during your treatment with aliskiren and amlodipine, especially:
  • antifungal medicine;
  • any other heart or blood pressure medicines;
  • atorvastatin (Lipitor) or simvastatin (Zocor);

  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)--aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others.
This list is not complete. Other drugs may interact with aliskiren and amlodipine, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed in this medication guide.

Aliskiren-amlodipine Dosage

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
You may take this medicine with or without food, but take it the same way every time.
You may have very low blood pressure while taking this medicine. Call your doctor if you are sick with vomiting or diarrhea, or if you feel very dizzy.
Your blood pressure will need to be checked often.
Your chest pain may become worse when you first start taking aliskiren and amlodipine, or when your dose is increased. Call your doctor if your chest pain is severe or ongoing.
If you need surgery or medical tests, tell the doctor ahead of time that you are using aliskiren and amlodipine. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.
Keep using this medicine as directed, even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life.

Dog Nail Polish

Dog Nail Polish

Earlier, dog grooming was all about dressing your dog in clothes, shampooing her fur and clipping her toenails. But now, thanks to celebrities like Paris Hilton who have changed the definition of dog grooming, we have people who would go to any lengths to get their dogs noticed. Spas and designer clothes for dogs are passe, today dog nail polish rules the roost when it comes to dog grooming. For some people, special nail polish for dogs might be a difficult concept to understand, but enthusiastic dog owners are more than happy to get their poochs toenail painted in colors of their choice.

Colors

Nail polish for dogs is available in almost every dazzling color imaginable. The color palette is greatly dependent upon the manufacturing company. Yet, there are at least 10 colors, that are equally popular. These include, white, purple, fuchsia, lime green, jet black, electric blue, shades of red and several other shades in shimmer. The myriad range of colors for dog nail polish allow you to paint your doggies nails in the color of your (or perhaps your doggies) choice. Clear shimmer colors are also available which can give your dogs toenails a sparkling shine.

Ingredients

While we are on the discussion about nail polish for dogs, some of you might have considered the possibility of using human nail polish on dogs. However, using your nail polish to paint your dogs nails is indeed a bad idea. Why? Because of the harmful ingredients contained in human nail polish. Human nail polish often comprises toxic chemicals, which can be detrimental to your dogs health, if she ends up chewing her toenails. Also, it can be harmful for your kids health, if they come in contact with the nail polish. Moreover, the toxic fumes erupting from your nail polish can make your dog sick. Hence, human nail polish must be avoided under all circumstances.

On the other hand, dog nail varnish contains natural ingredients which are not toxic. Ingredients such as aloe, seaweed, and green tea extracts are an integral part of nail polish for dogs. Often, these ingredients are combined with vitamin E to make your dogs toenail soft and smooth. The nail polish also contains quick drying agents, which magically dry the nail polish in whatever little time your dog permits you. Thus, commercially available dog nail polish is a completely safe nail polish for your dog.

Application Tips

It is especially important to have your dog in happy and relaxed mood before applying the nail polish. If your dog squirms a lot, have someone distract her with treats. Clean the toenails and trim the fur for smooth application. Apply only one coat of nail polish and allow it to dry by holding your dog steady. Since, the nail polish dries in a minute or so, your task takes considerably less amount of time. The nail polish kit comes with remover and pads which can be used to remove the nail polish when its time to say goodbye to old shade and acquire a new one. Your dog is bound to love her beautifully painted nails.

Thus, dog nail polish is an innovative way to give a makeover to your dog. The nail polish often survives the hard tests which your dog inflicts upon it by gnawing, scratching and chewing. Thus, you and your dog can admire her pretty paws for quite a long time!

Strive

Strive

We made it through 2014. We are standing on the precipice of a new year which is exciting, exhilarating and frankly a little nerve-wracking. Most of us are wondering what 2015 will look like for us and maybe even mapping out a plan or identifying a few goals. I know Ive been thinking about it, but I feel like I couldnt get much planning done without taking the time to reflect on the past year. How will I know what needs to be addressed in the upcoming year without looking at what was accomplished in the past one? As I started poking around in twenty-fourteen, what I found kinda blew me away.

Many times this year, I felt my wheels spinning but never really felt like I was making headway. You know when you are driving on a freeway with train tracks running parallel to you? And on the train tracks there is a train, but you cant quite tell if its actually moving or if its standing still? Thats how I felt. I was doing a lot but I wasnt getting anywhere. I couldnt see what was actually changing because there was so much movement. Before I compared my year to the goals I had written, I didnt feel like I had gotten anywhere at all.

Do you ever look at my blog history? Its in the left margin of this page and sorts my post history by year, then month. My research began there. This entry will be my 109th post (for this year). One hundred and nine blog posts. Thats an average of 2.09 entries a week for the past year. The topics range from my on-going struggle with weight, motherhood, career goals, beauty reviews, my new business and various events and emotions. A lot of content that I dont really see as a whole. I work on each blog post individually and once its sent out into the universe its rare that I go back. This post prompted me to do just that. I can tell you without a doubt if I had continued to research and found that those 108 blog posts were all I had made tangible headway on, I would be proud. That means I dedicated time and effort into my first love, writing. And that aint no small thing.

If you havent gathered it on your own, I had low expectations in the progress I had made this year. Im working on a whole lot of areas in my life and everyone knows, when you do that, you tend to give less than 100%. I felt that is where I was headed. There has been a whole lot of treading water and putting out fires in the last moment, and in my mind, if youre scrambling like a crazy person you are probably not succeeding. Sure, I gave myself credit for the big steps in my professional life and the hours upon hours of homework Ive done. Ill be honest, saying "its been intense." is an extreme understatement. Plus, Im following a passion by starting Lauriana Cosmetics (LC), which is so out of character for me. Half the time I feel like a fraud and half the time I feel like Im on top of the world for pursuing something that I love so much. Ive made myself vulnerable by daring to dream bigger and accepting any possible failure I may face. Which is huge for a girl that is paralyzed by the thought of rejection.

Imagine my surprise when I looked back at my year and realized that Im sort of a badass.

In January, I selected a word of the year, Strive, and followed up with specific things I was going to Strive for. I tried to be as honest as I could when I wrote them and at that time, the USC program and LC werent even on my radar. I reviewed them and gave myself a score on how I did.

Get my house in order.
3.5/5 - Our backyard has been landscaped, bookcases have been built, loads and loads of household items and clothes have been donated/sold/thrown away. We eat at home more. We clean the house more. We do our laundry more frequently. It has relieved a lot of stress. However, we still have processes to work out and routines to finalize. Its not great, but its better.

Read at least 5 books.
5/5 - I read quite a few books in Hawaii and although I cant name most of them, I know I definitely read more than five. Part of this goal was to read two books that were out of my comfort zone. Done and done. I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and the JonBenet - Inside The Ramsey Murder Investigation written by detective Steve Thomas, a lead detective on the case. Gone Girl just rocked my world and was infuriating and the Jon Benet Ramsey investigation broke my heart and made me cry. Poor sweet girl. Ugh. Since I tend to read romantic novels with happy endings, these books qualify for WAY WAY out of my comfort zone.

Save more money.
2/5 - If saving money means eating at home more, shopping smart and spending down your savings to pay for a ridiculously expensive program to receive my CBO certificate, I win. If it doesnt, I failed. I decided to give myself a little credit but since our savings is less than it was, well, I cant give myself a great score. This year I spent money to start a new website and business, to invest in it and to set up my school business career. The investment was worth it and next year will be about seeing those investments pay off.

Write, regularly.
5/5 - I already mentioned this, but just to really drive it home: In 2013 I blogged a total of 29 times. I mentioned earlier I blogged 109 times in 2014. That is 3.75 times more than what I did in 2013. Win, win, win!

Learn something new.
5/5 - I wrote "Take a class to learn a new skill or refine an old one." I meant take a sewing class or go to a makeup conference, but Im pretty sure the USC School Business Management Program counts. Tenfold.

Let go.
5/5 - I let go. Let go of fear. Let go of the safety zone. I wore bright and bold lipsticks. I became a USC Trojan. I started a business. Im working on a big project for this blog. I did it. And Im still doing it, but I feel confident enough to call it a win.

Ask for help.
3/5 - Ive definitely reached out for help. I havent always gotten it, but Ive reached out. Im not counting it a full win because it took me most of the year to work up my courage and when out of the few times I asked I got a "No." I took it hard. Personally. I waited until I was at the final hour to ask for help and no one was there and I took it hard. Im working on making myself ask for help before Im drowning. Im trying to make myself understand that hearing no when Im in need does not equal I dont love you. or Youre not important enough to help. There is a lot of heaviness attached to that way of thinking and Ive realized I need to change my inner dialogue.

Do it.
4/5 - Its hard to fight extreme laziness but I have really been trying. It creeps up now and again, but Ive really been trying to adult it up. It has caused some minor issues with Bryan, because hell want to play and go do things and Ill say "No. Im working on the grocery list and getting a meal plan together." or "I cant I have a huge project due in a week and I cant procrastinate." It has also caused issues with me because Im like "I just want to sit here and watch Jane the Virgin but I really need to do laundry and pick up around the house." I hate it, but taking care of shit makes life easier.

Go to Vegas, See Britney.
0/5 - Wooomp wooomp. I didnt make it to Vegas. I didnt see Britney Spears. Maybe next year?

Total Score: 32.5/45

I read those goals and started connecting memories to them and with each one I was more proud and exhilarated at what I had accomplished. All year I felt that I was spinning my wheels and yet I was actually doing big things. Great things. I saw great achievement in all of my goals! The only one that I outright failed was going to see Britney Spears in Vegas, which in comparison to the others, had an insignificant impact on my quality of life. Taking that "goal" out of the equation, I got 32.5 out 40 total points. 81%.

And, may I just mention again that at the time of writing those I didnt plan on embarking on a 13 month crash course in school business or starting a new company. That was all gravy on top. As I was researching, I could just feel the mental pat on the back. This is so, so encouraging. 2012 and 2013 were hard years on me. Life was chewing me up and spitting me out, over and over.

I was going through my secret tattoo inspiration board on Pinterest and one of them was a really pretty bow and arrow. Not something Id actually get but it was the description that made me pin it.

"An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it’s going to launch you into something great."

I followed the pin but it was a dead end (I hate when that happens.) and when I Googled it everything came up anonymous. I wish I knew. In the Christian world, its common to hear that when you are facing struggle, it isnt that God is orchestrating it. Bad and hard things happen. It is the way of life. But God uses those circumstances to shape you. To refine your character, your resilience. He can use those experiences to be a light to others that are walking a similar path.

I suffered in 2012 and 2013. I faced personal struggle like I had never before. In 2014 I told myself to let go and Strive for more and for better. To face fears and dream big. To do the work. I began to climb a mountain made of lies I told myself. I look back now and I see the growth. I see clearly where I was and where I am.

I cant wait to share with you where I see myself going in 2015.

Big Bad Wolf

Big Bad Wolf

We have a serious fascination with the big bad wolf in our house. I have absolutely no clue why but for the last several months both kiddos talk about the big bad wolf all the time.  ALL.  THE.  TIME.

Tyler will randomly gasp and put his hands up to his face. When you ask him whats wrong, he says "big bad wolf!"  Ill say, "Oh no! Wheres that big bad wolf?" Tyler will whisper , "hiding" and giggle like crazy.  Sometimes though he really acts scared.  Hell just get upset out of nowhere and start fussing and crying that the big bad wolf is coming.  Like tonight at bed time.  He whined and whined about the big bad wolf.  I told him that Daddy scared the big bad wolf and he ran far, far away and is never coming back.  Tyler seemed satisfied with that, for now.

Lily gets in to it too.  "Wheres the forest?  Cause I dont want to go there, cause the big bad wolf is there!!" She never says it in an "afraid" manner - its almost always with a smile or laugh.  But sometimes, the look on her face is a bit skeptical.  Like shes laughing it off as a way of convincing herself that the big bad wolf really isnt going to come and get her.

Crazy kiddos.

On a completely unrelated topic, I found some photos on Joels phone so thought Id share that.

We had our last pseudo warm-ish day of 55 degrees early last week so we decided to take advantage and have a campfire in the back yard.

Tyler helped collect sticks for the fire.  Cub Scout in training, maybe?

The kiddos were pretty excited about the whole thing, and insisted on eating supper outside.  This is Lilys absolute favorite thing and she was pretty bummed when summer was over and we couldnt eat supper outside anymore.

They both got in to roasting marshmallows but we still couldnt get them to try any smores.  Lily wouldnt even eat a marshmallow.  Tyler ate it all, but just separately.  I had no trouble eating a couple smores - I had mine "open face style" in order to maximize the amount of chocolate and gooey, melty marshmallow I could eat.

I am so excited about the day we get to take these kiddos camping!!  Maybe next summer.  Maybe.
