Ducks and slides

Ducks and slides

Duck race!

The fastest slide on the planet (maybe)
Its half term week, and today I took Matthew to Gower Heritage Centre for a day out (Daniel was in nursery).  The centre were holding a pirate event for the week, which I thought Matthew might enjoy although I was a little wary that he might not like it as there were people dressed up as pirates - he often finds people in costume a bit scary.

After getting a little lost on the way and having to rely on Google Maps to correct my driving, we arrived and Matthew was frightened by the pirates as soon as we entered the building!  He also found the entrance a bit scary with a loud water wheel and some mill equipment in quite a dark, confined room.  I persuaded him to walk through the entrance hall and we found an outdoor play area which he was happy to play in.  We stayed for a while as Matthew really enjoyed the slide - it was probably the fastest hes ever come across which made it really fun.  I was finally able to persuade him to have a look around the rest of the centre, although initially with limited success (he was scared of the chickens, and sheep in the Animal Park).

Eventually he was willing to come into the marquee area where he enjoyed playing some of the old fashioned arcade games - he really enjoyed the skittles, noughts and crosses, and rolling balls into a board with holes.  Once the place had filled up a bit, Matthew overcame his fear of the pirates and enjoyed playing in the bouncy castle and on some pedal tractors.  We enjoyed some lunch (Matthew had a ham sandwich - just ham and butter, so no problems with unwanted ingredients) and then looked around the shop, where we bought Matthew and Daniel some picture hooks with their names on, before entering the duck race.

The duck race was the highlight of our visit - approximately 100 numbered pirate-themed rubber ducks were let loose along a small stream.  Matthew found this very exciting but unfortunately our duck, number 91, almost came last - it was at the back to start with but passed a few ducks before being overtaken again to finish last-but-one.

Matthew left with a pirate hat and foam sword, and told me that hed really enjoyed his day after all and would like to go back.  His favourite part of the day was the fast slide and bouncy castle.
