Swimming progress
Swimming progress
Matthew has made good progress at his swimming lessons recently and is now top of stage 1, although the teacher has said he isnt quite ready to move up to stage 2 yet. Matthew is keen to move to stage 2, but Im glad he isnt just yet as if hes not ready it is likely to wreck his confidence. One boy who started with Matthew has already moved up, which was a shame as they had made good friends.
He can now swim across the length of the pool on his back using a float, although a few weeks ago he whacked his head on the side of the pool because he cant see where hes going. Now, he pauses when he gets near the edge to keep checking whether hes reached the side!
I had a brief opportunity to watch Matthew swim on his back last Tuesday when I had to collect Daniel from the leisure centre after work. Gramps normally looks after Daniel while Louise takes Matthew swimming, but he was away last week so Louise had to take Daniel. When I arrived he was causing chaos and Louise had taken him to the viewing balcony out of the way (she usually waits in the cafe); on the way out he refused to hold my hand but with some persistence I managed to get him to walk / run back to the car.
Matthew seems to be getting on well at school and has had good feedback for his homework, even though he still gets very frustrated with it. Hes usually keen to do it, and getting him to sit down and start it isnt too difficult but after he gets something wrong he starts sulking and wants to give up. This is especially tricky with spelling (esp. Welsh), because if hes never seen the word before you would expect some practice to be needed to get it right. Matthew seems to expect to be able to get everything right first time.
