Low Blood Sugar Symptoms in Dogs

Low Blood Sugar Symptoms in Dogs

Sniff sniff!
Dogs have the ability to smell hypoglycemia and alert their owners to take measures before the attack. Most trainers claim that accuracy of trained canines to warn low blood sugar is 90%. But what if your dog has this condition. In that case, you must learn to identify the symptoms...Glucose is the main source of energy for humans and animals. It is obtained when the body breaks down carbohydrates from foods. There are many factors which might cause the blood glucose to drop to dangerously low levels causing a condition called hypoglycemia. According to most experts, in dogs, hypoglycemia occurs when their blood glucose levels fall below 70 mg/dl. The condition affects puppies more severely than adult dogs. Severely hypoglycemic puppies can have seizures or go into a coma. Sometimes, affected puppies may succumb to the condition. Being aware of the main symptoms of the condition can help you act before it gets too late to save your pet.

Paw
Your Dog May be Hypoglycemic if he...

...is more lethargic or sleepier than usual.
...is showing signs of depression, nervousness or anxiety for no apparent reason.
...has muscle weakness or has a wobbly gait.
...walks with a tilted head.
...is abnormally hungry or thirsty.
...has dilated pupils.
...is sweating more than usual, and has trembling lips.
...is not responding to your calls.
...is having trouble seeing.
...has jerky or clumsy body movements.
...has seizures.
...is going into a coma.

Paw
Things you Can Do

Once you notice the symptoms of hypoglycemia in your dog, feed him with corn syrup or similar sugar products. Administer the syrup with a needleless syringe. Avoid giving any liquid if your dog is unconscious; simply rub the sugar on the gums and under the tongue. This should be done before you take your pet to a veterinary hospital.

When the blood sugar level drops, dogs may feel extremely cold and so keeping them warm is also important.

Any medicines which have been prescribed by the vet should be followed according to the recommended dosages, and regular check-ups are a must.

Regular and frequent feeding (4 times a day), routine vaccinations, and deworming procedures should also be a part of the treatment for low blood sugar in dogs.

Paw
Susceptible Dog Breeds

1. Dogs employed mainly for hunting activities
Why?
- Such dogs are highly susceptible to hypoglycemia given their intense physical exertion.

2. Diabetic dogs
Why?
- Insulin overdose puts such dogs at high risk of low blood sugar.

3. Toy breed puppies especially those who are 6 and 12 weeks of age
Why?
- They lack the ability to regulate their blood sugar levels.

4. Dogs with insulinoma (tumor of the pancreas)
Why?
- Such tumors secrete insulin which acts to lower glucose levels in the blood.

Hypoglycemia in dogs is not a severe condition if it is tend to immediately. Owners whose dogs are diabetic must exercise extra caution. They should keep a close watch on their pets for any signs of low or high blood sugar level and also see to it that they are getting the proper amount of feeding and exercise too.

Dog Vomiting Blood

Dog Vomiting Blood

Is your dog vomiting blood? This condition is medically referred to as hematemesis. If your dog is throwing up blood, have your dog examined by a vet in order to determine the cause. Though vomiting could just be a case of dietary intolerance, throwing up large amounts of blood could even be a symptom of a serious ailment.

Hematemesis in Dogs

Causes

If it is your puppy that is vomiting blood, have a vet examine it. Its possible that the puppy may be suffering from a parasitic infection. If a tumor in the dogs gastrointestinal tract bleed, there may be significant amount of blood in the dogs vomit. The dog may vomit blood if blood gets filled up in the dogs lungs. Blood clotting disorders can also cause this problem. Gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, ingestion of non-food items, speedy eating, bile overproduction and anxiety are some of the possible reasons behind a dog throwing up blood and bile. In case, vomiting is also accompanied by diarrhea, your dog might be suffering from intestinal obstruction or peritonitis.

Stomach ulcers, esophagus ulcers or duodenum ulcers could also be contributory factors for hematemesis. Sometimes, certain drugs can have an adverse effect on the blood platelet count. Thrombocytopenia is the condition associated with a dip in the level of blood platelet count. This can also be one of the reasons why your dog may be vomiting blood. Your dog may throw up blood on swallowing a splintered bone. You must also check if your dog is suffering from a nosebleed or bleeding gums. In case your dog swallowed this blood, that might induce vomiting. Consumption of rat poison could also cause this condition.

Diagnosis

If your pet is throwing up blood, watch out for other symptoms such as weakness, diarrhea, lethargy, nausea, belching, bloating, pain in the abdominal region, pale gums and loss of appetite. Since the presence of blood in vomit can be linked to several dog health issues, you must get your dog examined soon. The veterinarian will generally get some blood tests done in order to check for the platelet count and perform X-rays to investigate the presence of tumors. Ultrasound and endoscopy for the stomach might also help in determining the condition responsible for causing blood in vomit.

Treatment

Once the underlying cause of blood in vomit has been diagnosed, the vet will initiate the symptomatic treatment. Severe vomiting can lead to dehydration, therefore, intravenous fluids might be required to stabilize the condition of your dog. Sometimes, the problem could be caused due to a change in your dogs diet. In that case, you need to discontinue that diet, and provide your dog with a bland diet. Spicy food can aggravate the problem of stomach ulcers, so be very careful about the food your dog eats.

Prostaglandin drugs may be prescribed by the vet in case of ulcers. Sometimes, dog coughing up blood might be related to gum diseases. In this case, dental hygiene needs to be taken care of. You must also make sure that your dog doesnt consume non-food items. Rat poison and other toxic substances must be kept out of their reach. In case, swallowing a splintered bone has caused this condition, a laxative will be used by the veterinarian to tackle the problem. Antibiotics might also be required to reduce the chances of an infection.

In case your dog is suffering from this condition, make sure that you consult a veterinarian soon. The earlier the diagnosis, the better would be the chances of a speedy recovery. Follow the advice of your vet regarding the diet and aftercare.

Low blood pressure Symptoms of Low blood pressure Home remedies of Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure Symptoms of Low blood pressure Home remedies of Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure (hypo tension) is the pressure of the blood in the arteries. It occurs when the pressure of the blood is abnormally low. Blood pressure is typically recorded as the systolic pressure (as the heart beats) over the diastolic pressure (time between two beats). A consistent blood pressure reading of 90/60 mm Hg or lower is considered low blood pressure. People with low BP may experience symptoms of dizziness or syncope (fainting) as the blood flow to the brain and other vital organs becomes insufficient.

Blood pressure is basically a measurement of the pressure exerted by blood flow on the walls of the arteries, as it is pumped through the body to the various organs. While high blood pressure is quite well defined, low blood pressure is usually relative and not an absolute. While the normal measurement of blood pressure is 120/80 mm hg this level could vary quite widely among different individuals, and low blood pressure simply refers to the abnormality, where the blood pressure of the person is much lower than the normal. Low blood pressure symptoms include fatigue, headaches, dizziness or light headiness, because of oxygen deprivation. This is because the reduced blood flow causes a poor supply of oxygen to the brain and other vital organs of the body.

The main dangers of low blood pressure stem from an inability of the heart to pump adequate blood to the various organs of the body. As a result the organs cannot function properly and there could be temporary or even permanent damage to the organs. Low blood pressure problems will generally manifest some symptoms.

An impaired blood flow to the coronary arteries, which are responsible for supplying blood to the heart muscles could cause a person to develop chest pain, symptomatic of angina, or the person could even experience a heart attack.

Kidney Damage or Failure: Reduced blood flow to the kidneys can impair their ability to eliminate wastes from the body, consequentially increasing the levels of these wastes and toxins in the blood. This can therefore create still more complications affecting various other organs of the body. This is the main danger of low blood pressure. Very low blood pressure levels or persistently low blood pressure levels could lead to rapid deterioration and failure of the vital organs like the heart, brain, lungs, livers and kidneys, leading to death.

Low blood pressure symptoms

The patient with chronic low blood pressure may complain of lethargy, weakness, fatigue, and dizziness.

Common Causes of Low Blood Pressure

Dehydration (due to sweating and/or diarrhea)

Medications (for high BP or other treatments)

Severe infection

Heart attack

Heart failure

Pregnancy

Home remedies for Low blood pressure

The best and the most effective home remedy for treating low blood pressure would be to consume lots of water. This is because dehydration reduces blood volume and leads to a drop in the blood pressure.

Beetroot juice is beneficial for those suffering from low blood pressure. So, have a cup of raw beetroot juice two times a day.

Prepare a cup of strong black coffee and consume this whenever you feel that your blood pressure is dipping.

Put 15-20 gm of Indian Spikenard in 250 ml water and boil it. Now, remove from heat and let it cool down. Have this infusion thrice a day. You can also have 30-40 grains of Indian Spikenard, along with some camphor and cinnamon.

Fill your bathtub with lukewarm water and add one kg of Epsom salt to it. Immerse yourself in the bath for 20 minutes, before going to bed. Take caution not to expose the body to a cold area after this.

In a bowl of water, soak 7 almonds and keep them overnight. Peel them and prepare a paste. Add this paste to lukewarm milk and drink it.

Take a bowl of water and soak 30 raisins in it, overnight. Chew them one by one, on an empty stomach, in the morning and have water.

Holy basil works effectively in curing low blood pressure. Take about 15 holy basil leaves and crush them. Filter the mixture with the help of a muslin cloth. Have this filtered mixture, along with a tsp of honey, on an empty stomach.

Include salt, asafetida and fruits in your diet. All these are beneficial in restoring the blood pressure level.

Foods rich in proteins, vitamin C and vitamin B are effective in treating low blood pressure.

Exercises, light walking, swimming and cycling are beneficial in regulating the blood pressure level.

Transfusion-transmitted infections have been documented for several arboviruses, including West Nile and dengue viruses (1). Zika virus, a flavivirus transmitted primarily by Aedes aegyptimosquitoes that has been identified as a cause of congenital microcephaly and other serious brain defects (2), became recognized as a potential threat to blood safety after reports from a 2013–2014 outbreak in French Polynesia. Blood safety concerns were based on very high infection incidence in the population at large during epidemics, the high percentage of persons with asymptomatic infection, the high proportion of blood donations with evidence of Zika virus nucleic acid upon retrospective testing, and an estimated 7–10-day period of viremia (3). At least one instance of transfusion transmission of Zika virus has been documented in Brazil after the virus emerged there, likely in 2014 (4). Rapid epidemic spread has followed to other areas of the Americas, including Puerto Rico.
In February 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued recommendations for donor screening, donor deferral, and product management to reduce the risk for transfusion-transmitted Zika virus in the United States and its territories (5). In addition to behavioral- and health-risk questionnaires for blood donors in all areas, FDA recommends deferrals for donors in unaffected areas who recently lived in or visited an area with active mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus. For establishments collecting blood in areas with active, local mosquito-borne transmission, such as Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories, the recommendations include discontinuing local blood collections and importing blood units from unaffected areas of the continental United States unless one of the following is implemented: 1) Zika virus screening of locally collected blood donations or 2) treatment of locally collected units with pathogen-reduction technology (FDA-approved only for plasma and apheresis platelets). In Puerto Rico, interventions initially were limited to importation of blood units from unaffected U.S. areas and to treatment of plasma and apheresis platelets with pathogen-reduction technology; no Zika virus screening test was available. On April 3, 2016, Zika virus screening of locally collected blood donations was implemented using a newly developed nucleic acid test (NAT) (cobas Zika, Roche Molecular Systems, Inc., Pleasanton, California) authorized by FDA under an investigational new drug application (IND) (6). As part of the IND, plasma samples from blood donors are screened individually, and specimens with reactive results are subjected to additional testing including an alternate NAT and immunoglobulin M serology. A blood donation with an initial reactive result by NAT is regarded as a presumptive viremic donor, indicating an infected donor, and is interdicted and removed from the blood supply.
During April 3–June 11, 2016, a total of 68 (0.5%) presumptive viremic donors were identified from 12,777 donations tested. The highest weekly incidence was 1.1% for the latest week of reporting, June 5–June 11, and incidence has been increasing over time (Figure).
Although the blood donor population of Puerto Rico is not intended to be statistically representative of the general population, the increasing prevalence of Zika virus nucleic acid among blood donors likely reflects an overall increase in infection incidence in the population at large. Based on data from previous outbreaks caused by arboviruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti, the high incidence often associated with these outbreaks can result in a substantial proportion of the population becoming infected. For example, chikungunya virus was introduced into Puerto Rico in 2014. Retrospective screening for chikungunya virus nucleic acid was performed on blood donations collected during June–December 2014, and the estimated detectable viremia was 0.65%, with a peak of 2.1% in October. Testing for chikungunya virus immunoglobulin M antibody of retained individual blood donation samples obtained during March 1–9, 2015, suggested that nearly 25% of the Puerto Rico population became infected during the previous year’s epidemic (7). Because viremia is only present days after acute infection, immunoglobulin M antibody can provide a more precise estimate of the burden of recent infection. The 2014–2015 chikungunya virus data suggest that detection of viremia in a relatively small proportion of blood donors each week can reflect a substantial proportion of the general population becoming infected during the course of an epidemic season.
Currently, no medication or vaccine is available to treat or prevent Zika virus disease. Prevention relies on avoidance of mosquito bites, elimination of mosquito breeding sites, community mosquito control, and taking measures to prevent sexual transmission. Screening of the U.S. blood supply using nucleic acid tests has markedly reduced the risk for transfusion transmission for multiple pathogens, including for West Nile virus after it was associated with arboviral epidemics in the United States. Measures to protect the blood supply from Zika virus, including donor deferrals, laboratory screening, and pathogen reduction technology, are expected to similarly reduce the risk for transfusion transmission.

Lower Risk of Alzheimers Keep you blood sugar levels normal and thus avoiding elevated insulin David Perlmutter MD

Lower Risk of Alzheimers Keep you blood sugar levels normal and thus avoiding elevated insulin David Perlmutter MD

Alzheimer’s News – This Should Be Front Page!
.entry-header
It’s a staggering statistic, but we are told that by the year 2050 as many as 16 million Americans will be living with Alzheimer’s disease. Projected costs, mostly dedicated to nursing homes and homecare, are estimated to exceed $1.1 trillion.
Research dedicated to Alzheimer’s disease is laser-focused on finding a cure. Unfortunately, our most well-respected institutions are coming up empty-handed despite the incredible dedication of monetary resources in this area.
With these ideas in mind, it is unfortunate, if not heart-wrenching, to consider the simple fact that there is a profound relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes.
Melissa Schilling, a professor at the NYU Stern School of Business, has just completed a large scale study in which she reviewed the extensive literature that clearly associates diabetes with Alzheimer’s disease, both in terms of risk and now in terms of mechanism. She was able to find robust evidence that links insulin, as well as the enzyme that degrades insulin (insulin-degrading enzyme or IDE), and the development of Alzheimer’s disease in itself. Her study strongly suggest that elevated insulin plays a critical role in the development of the various hallmarks characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.
To be clear, there are a variety of so-called “Alzheimer’s drugs” on the market. These drugs do not treat the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s and are designed to simply work on reducing symptoms of the disease. That said, the overwhelming evidence indicates that these drugs are ineffective, even as it relates to managing symptoms.
I have nothing against research focused on finding a cure for this dreadful disease. However, I am quite taken by the fact that hardly any attention is given to the notion of preventing Alzheimer’s in the first place, despite the fact that we now have such solid evidence that lifestyle choices, predominantly diet and exercise, play a huge role in determining who does or who doesn’t end up with this diagnosis.
It is for this reason that I have been so deeply dedicated to supporting a low carbohydrate diet, a diet that’s very restrictive when it comes to simple sugars, to do everything possible to reduce the risk for diabetes. The evidence relating dietary choices to diabetes risk is well substantiated at this point and should be, in my opinion, part of the routine discussion in a doctor’s office. This discussion now takes on an even higher level of importance as we recognize this relationship between elevated insulin, as is seen in type II diabetes, and risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
Back in 2013 when I wrote Grain Brain, I emphasized the importance of insulin in terms of brain health, and included a fasting insulin level in laboratory recommendations. Dr. Schilling now confirms the fundamental importance of testing insulin levels precisely because of this implication for brain health. As she was recently quoted in Diabetes News Journal:
If we can raise awareness and get more people tested for hyperinsulinemia (elevated insulin), especially those who have been diagnosed with or who are at risk for dementia, it could significantly lessen the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, as well as other diabetes-related health problems.
You will also recall how in Grain Brain I emphasized the importance of focusing on eating foods that have a low glycemic index. It appears that Dr. Schilling agrees as she plans to petition the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to add glycemic index to food labels.
The take-home message is that brain health depends on keeping blood sugar levels normal, and thus avoiding elevated insulin.
I’m planning to interview Dr. Schilling for a future episode of The Empowering Neurologist, so keep an eye out for that, and comment here with any questions you’d like me to ask!
