Theft
Theft
We were burgled on Thursday. Im not sure how, as Louise was in all day, and nothing much was touched so we didnt even notice until the evening. When I came to go on the computer after the boys were put to bed, I realised that there was no computer, and several other things in the same place had gone. It was only after the police had left that we discovered that Matthews Leap Pad - a small childrens tablet computer - had also been taken, along with his carry case containing all of his games. The rest of the stuff I can just about understand as it has a relatively good resale value, but the Leap Pad is hardly worth anything used and it means Matthew has lost all of his progress at his levels.
How do you explain something like this to a 5 year old - that someone has walked into your home, and deliberately taken your things? We had to tell him, and we did tell the truth, after debating whether to water it down or not. To begin with he got excited because a baddie had been in his house, but after a while he began to get scared, especially when he overheard Louise and I talking about the crime and how it could have happened. I was worried he wouldnt sleep, but fortunately my friend Andrew came over the next evening when Louise went to work, so the two of us were able to talk fairly loudly downstairs which reassured him that he was safe. Since then he hasnt been too bad - he was a bit frightened to play in the back garden yesterday, but I thought it would be good for him to go outside sooner rather than later, and he did enjoy it after a while.
Unfortunately Matthew really enjoys his Leap Pad and it is one of the few things he can play with downstairs now Daniel is crawling round and Matthews smaller toys arent suitable. He has been good this weekend considering, and friends and family have been very generous in offering to help replace it.
The long term effects on us are still uncertain; hopefully things will get easier but right now our home doesnt feel like home.
