Mummy learns mathematics

Mummy learns mathematics

Louise went to the school this evening for a parents talk from the mathematics co-ordinator in the county about how mathematics is taught. I had to look after Matthew and Daniel so I couldnt go, and I wasnt alone - only 6 parents turned up and the headmistress was very disappointed having put out 60 chairs. There were more teachers than parents! Louise thought the session was useful as maths is taught in a completely different way to how it was taught when we were in school. The teachers use a device called a numicon which uses shapes to represent numbers. The shapes also weigh in the correct proportions to balance when numbers are placed on either side of a scale, so 3 weighs half as much as 6 for example. Apparently it is important for us to use the same language as the teachers when we talk about maths with Matthew, and Louise came home with a booklet to explain more about how maths is taught.
