Parents Evening
Louise and I went to Matthews parents evening on Tuesday, the last one for his reception class as he will be in year 1 come the autumn. All of the feedback was positive - his teacher told us that he has gained in confidence and is now happy to stand up for himself if someone tries to snatch something from him, which was one of her concerns last time. She also said that his language skills and reading have come along well, and we were shown some examples of his writing which has really improved and looks quite neat.
The children now have a chance to mark their own work by giving themselves green, orange or red circles, and his teacher was impressed at Matthews self-criticism when he gave himself an orange mark for a colouring picture he had done because he felt "it could have been neater" - apparently most of the children give themselves green for everything. The picture itself was quite neat and would really have deserved a green circle given his age.
His number work is also progressing well and he can count past 100 in Welsh as well as English. He has been doing simple maths problems using addition and subtraction. He has started doing this by working out a problem using a real example, e.g. "if you have 5 circles and add 2 more, how many are there"?, and then his teacher has shown him how to write this out as a sum.
Although he is the oldest in the class, his education doesnt seem to be suffering as his teacher usually leads them in several groups to make sure the work is appropriate to the childrens ability. Apparently there are some children in year 2 and 3 who are doing similar work to Matthew.
