Vision Training Case

Vision Training Case

I started working with a young individual in his freshman year in college.  His main complaint was that he was having trouble taking in the whole playing field when he was looking at one particular player.  Even though the patient suffered from an eye injury two years ago, there was no organic problem with the eye.
I started doing vision training on him.  Yesterday, he related that all the action on the football field looked as if it were slower.  In other words, his reaction time was a look quicker.  Also, he said his receptions (ability to catch the ball) from the quarterback improved markedly.  Needless to say, he was very happy.
Vision training has so many applications.  These include individuals who have problems keeping their place reading or get headaches while doing near tasks including reading from text, desktops, laptops, or mobile devices.  It also includes people who have poor depth perception or poor hand-eye coordination.

Potty Training

Potty Training

I havent pushed Potty Training really hard with Brody because he has has not seemed interested when I did try so I didnt want to push it. Everyone told me that when he was ready I would know. I really would like him to be trained before the new baby comes but  yet I dont want him to regress once the baby is here. He is big enough and tells me when he has went in his diaper, so I thought I would give it another go, starting yesterday evening! He did awesome! He went in and the potty and had no accidents. He was so very proud of himself and as a reward we took a trip to the dollar store ( whatever works)! He has also done great today, and had 0 accidents. That was even with us leaving the house to go to Library Toddler Time and to lunch at Subway ( his pick, his favorite). I hope that it continues to go well and I am not putting diapers back on him, unless it just fails and maybe he just isnt ready. So far he is doing great!! It is a bitter sweet moment for me, although I really want him out of diapers, its just anohter step that my baby is growing up! Brody is 2 years and 9 months!

Just wanted to write about this so I would have it for my personal memories......

Adventures in Potty Training

Adventures in Potty Training

The day started around 5 when Tyler woke up crying in his bed.  He actually stayed in bed until about 5:25 before getting up in search of his Daddy.  But he found me instead, much to his colossal disappointment.

He asked me to change his diaper (which was only pee pee filled) so I did.  Then got him some milk and worked on convincing him its not wake up time.  We even bought a special "Ok to Wake Up" clock that turns green when its time to get up.  I showed him it wasnt green yet so not time to get up.  He whined a little, but stayed in bed.

I went ahead and took my shower since its now only 5 minutes from my normal wake up time.  Upon getting out of the shower, Joel comes in to get me and says, "You got to see this."

Theres a 50/50 chance that its a good thing when he says that.  Today the odds were not in my favor.

I come out of our bedroom to see a couple piles of gooey poo in the hallway, accompanied by poo footprints and Tyler standing in his room with no pants or diaper on.

Tyler:  "I pooped."

Uh, you think?

Not only does Tylers biological clock wake him up every morning between 4:30 and 5, its also set to have a bowel movement between 5:30 and 6:00.  We know this.  Its pretty consistent (what I wouldnt give for this kind of consistency!).  So why I didnt have him sit on the potty and try to poop when I changed his diaper at 5:25, I do not know.  I can only say that I was not totally with it and just focused on getting this boy to go back to bed for another half hour.

Joel said that Tyler came to our door with his pants around his ankles, holding his diaper.  Apparently, Tyler recognized the urge to go to the bathroom and pulled his pants down, removed his diaper (while in his bedroom) and then just didnt make it to the toilet before his bowels betrayed him all over the floor.

The bright side?  While he may not have made it to the bathroom, he did make it to the hallway and off the carpeting making clean up a lot easier.

The other bright side?  Potty training him might be pretty easy.  God or ruler of the toddler universe or whoever is in charge here, please dont punish me for saying that and string out potty training for a year. He clearly understands his body and knows what it feels like to need to potty.  Its just training him to recognize it a little sooner or hold it a little longer.

Potty Training A trip to the dentist

Potty Training A trip to the dentist

You may have read on here before about a few trips Brody has had to the dentist and some of the problems he is having with his little teeth aka cavities. We made another trip to the Dentist today, to see if they could use Laughing Gas and be able to fill a few cavities. I didnt really think that Brody would let them but I wanted to try one last time (rather than putting him to sleep.) He really was trying to be a big boy but he just did not want it done. I am looking for a good pediatric dentist in the Lexington area if any of you have any recommendations, please let me know!

I am so proud of Brody!!! We started potty training 2 weeks ago today and it has went so well. I am so glad that I waited until he was a bit older because honestly it has been so easy. He was definitely ready and it helped so much! Over the last 2 weeks of training he has woke up dry every morning, and probably has only had a total of 5 accidents the whole time, I would say he is Trained. He still is so proud each time he uses the potty and he continues to tell me that he is a BIG BOY! I am so proud of my Big Boy!

Thank you all so much for all of the advice on my last post about baby gear!

Here are some pictures from my Iphone of daily happenings around here...

Potty Training For Real

Potty Training For Real

Tylers class has started potty training in earnest this past week.  Which is nice because Joel and  I decided about a week ago that we were going to get serious about potty training now that we are done with crazy work and weekend travel.

During our hotel stay this weekend, in the morning while we were waiting for the water park to open, I asked Tyler if he had to go potty.  He normally poops every morning and hadnt yet done that.  I was mostly being selfish in asking him to poopie because I really didnt want to clean up poop from a wet swim diaper.

So Tyler says he does have to go potty and makes a bee line for the bathroom.  Hes very big about "I do it myself" to take his pants down and undo his diaper.  Joel perched him up on the potty and a few seconds later we hear some grunting coming from the bathroom.

Me:  "Tyler, are you pooping in there?"
Tyler:  "YEAH.  UHHHHHHHNNNNN!"
Me:  "Are you done?"
Tyler:  "NO!  UUUUUUUHHHNN!"

Joel gets up to investigate and sure enough Tylers crapped a bowlful (Joels words).  "Hurry up and come see this!  Quick!  He already flushed so you have to hurry!"  It was disgusting and I was SO EXCITED that I didnt have to clean that up from a wet swim diaper!

Since returning from our trip, weve been trying to remember to put Tyler on the potty at least once an hour.  So far so good.  A few dribbles in the pull up here and there but no soaking and hes going almost every time.

So proud of this little guy!  He just might get underwear for Christmas.  What a lucky dude!

Vision Training

Vision Training

I started working with a a ten year old boy in vision training. He is a superior performer in baseball but has problems with attention. His father wanted me to examine him stating when a ball was hit directly to him, he was slow to react.  The patients eyes were healthy and were able to see clearly without any prescription.  There is a very specific problem with the coordination of his eyes. The eyes are straight.  This type of problem for those in the optometric field is that his base-in findings to break and recovery are very low.  He has problems aiming his eyes beyond the target quickly. This problem , indirectly could lead one to be inattentive at times, also causing reading comprehension problems.  Well be working with him over the next several weeks on this issue and see if theres an improvement in performance.
